All of our Herb Plants are grown organically with certified organic potting mixes and fertilizers

Botanical Name: Ruta graveolens 'Jackman's Blue'

Jackman’s Blue is a compact hybrid variety of rue with fine silvery – blue metallic leaves, growing about 60cm wide and 60 cm high. Rue is grown largely for its ornamental contribution to modern gardens, where its strong aroma and attractive, fine blue-green leaves add a different perspective.

There are several varieties of common rue, which is a perennial shrub with many stems extending up from a woody base, spreading to about 45 cm wide and up to 1 meter high. The bitter tasting leaves of common rue are a grey-green, blue-green or even variegated and may be somewhat variable in the same plant. The leaves have a strong aroma, often described as unpleasant. The fringed yellow flowers are produced in early summer.

Rue plants grow wild in its native Mediterranean environment. It was highly recommended by the Ancients, such as Hippocrates, for many ailments. The name ‘ruta’ is from the Greek for ‘to set free’ and appeared in writing as early as 1562 that noted its varied medicinal purposes. Great Italian artists and painters used rue to help improve and preserve their sight, making it ‘sharp and clear.’

Rue was once added to Holy Water, earning the plant the name Herb of Grace. Rue also has a long history of association with magic and witches. It was regarded an anti-magical herb by the ancient Greeks who used it to remedy nervous indigestion when meeting new people – which they thought was bought on by witchcraft. In the Middle Ages, rue was also considered a powerful defence against witches, was used in many spells and thought to confer the second sight.

Today, rue is usually reserved for mundane activities, such as an ornamental border in the garden.

Growing Conditions

Like all rue, Jackman’s Blue is a hardy plant and grows well in cool or warm climates, particularly in areas with good winter rains. However, rue does not like the summer humidity typical of tropical areas as the wet conditions can contribute to root rot or leaf fungus issues. Rue will tolerate some shade in hot summer areas, but in areas with mild summers full sun is required.

During the first year, extra care and watering may be needed, but following this, the plants should be hardy and drought tolerant. Well drained, but generally poor, sandy or gravel based soils suit rue very well. Its natural Mediterranean habitat tends towards dry, rocky outcrops, including limestone rich areas. In acidic soils, limestone may need to be added to the planting area. Rich soil can lead to an overgrown or leggy appearance, in contrast to compact bushy growth. In frost prone areas, the plant is also more likely to survive if planted in poorer soils and given some protection. In its native habitat, rue would receive irregular rainfall during most of the year. Deep watering on a fortnightly basis would help to replicate this and ensure a healthy plant with ‘dry feet’. In summer, rue should be watered only in very dry areas and only if the plant looks in need of water.

Rue may be propagated by seed, but will grow readily from woody cuttings taken from late spring to late summer. If the woody stems from adult plant touch the ground they will form roots and can later be dug up and transferred elsewhere in the garden.

Medicinal Uses

Medical professionals strongly advise against the use of rue for medicinal purposes due to its toxic properties. The chemicals in the rue plant have a strong stimulating, anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory action. However, in medicinal doses rue can have undesirable and toxic effects often worsening the very problem it was intended to treat, such as kidney disease. History shows that rue has a long tradition of medicinal use; including by women to induce abortions, use in aiding liver and kidney problems, treating skin problems and digestive upsets, encouraging onset of menstruation and eye complaints. There are now serious safety concerns because some medical conditions may worsen after the use of rue. Pregnant women should avoid rue due to the risk of uterine contractions leading to miscarriage.

Culinary Uses

Rue is not used often in food preparation, due to the bitter taste and pungent aroma. However, it can be used in salads, or sandwiches, in small amounts. It may also be used to flavour herbal vinegars. Rue is toxic in larger quantities, but is considered safe in small quantities as used in food preparation.

Other Uses

Rue has value as an insect repellent and is even said to repel dogs and cats, who don’t like the smell. Plant the rue bush directly where insects (or dogs and cats) are a problem or use the dried leaves where needed, for example, to repel moths in cupboards. Leaves can be picked any time for use as an insecticide infusion or dried for later use. Rue is also used in soaps, fragrances and culinary flavourings.

Companion Plants

Due to the insect repelling qualities of rue, the plant can be useful planted near roses, or fruiting plants, like raspberries to keep insects away. Rue does not like basil.

Cord installation is difficult but works overall
Color: White-Mount
I have 2 monitors (27” and 24”) that I attached to my Pottery Barn corner desk with the c-clamp. The installation wasn’t that difficult - at first. Then I had to store the cords and wires and the plastic backing on the arms ALMOST burst at the seams trying to hold all of them. My husband and Dad had to step in and help me get the plastic backing on the arms WHILE holding the cords in place. Once the installation was complete it worked perfectly fine. I’ve had it for 2 weeks and no issues to date. Additionally the manufacturer assumed that everyone has a CPU when MOST people use laptops because the plugs for the USB ports are attached to the backend of the device. Now I have to find a way to hide the cords. It’s a great product that is strong and seems like it will last.

Great Dual Monitor Mount
Color: White-Mount
I bought this dual monitor arm desk mount for my wife’s computer to mount two 32” monitors. Unpacking and installation were fairly straight forward. The only two issues I had were: 1). Instructions state that this mount can be installed using a grommet hole in a desk to secure it to the desk. However, most grommet holes in desks (at least in the United States) are 2” holes. The grommet mounting option uses two all-thread bolts screwed into the base, but the outside spacing of the bolts is about 2-1/4” which, of course, is too big for 2” grommet holes. I ended up drilling two smaller holes in the desk, one for each all-thread bolt. On the plus side, this option secures the mount to the desk very securely. 2). There is no guidance in the installation instructions for optimal placement of the arm mount on the desk. I ended up temporarily installing the lower set of arms on the mount base and then experimented moving the base around the desk while swinging the arms to make sure they would clear all computer and other equipment on the desk as well as the walls. This method worked well and final placement clears everything while still giving full articulation of both arms. The unit is very heavy-duty and quality is excellent. Other than the two items mentioned above I am very impressed with this product. After installing this unit on my wife’s desk, and playing with it for a few days, I ordered one for my desk. Because of the two issues above I would give this 4-1/2 stars if I could. But these smaller issues are not enough for me to lower my rating to 4 stars, so 5 stars it is.

Great Looking and Sturdy Monitor Arms
Color: White-Mount, Color: White-Mount
I'm so impressed with these arms. They're super strong and sturdy holding up my 27" monitor and 34" ultrawide monitor. Setting up for the most part is pretty simple and easy. One of the best things I like about these arms is the cable management. I had several arms before for my setup at home and work, and the cable covers are usually pretty flimsy and just slide and lock in. I have a lot DP and HDMI cables due to my dual workstation, so these cable covers often end up popping out since its so full. These cable covers are different since they are screwed down tight with a bolt. All my cables fit pretty snug, but there is no bulging and I don't have to worry about the covers popping off ever again. I'd recommend keeping it at a maximum of 4 thicker cables though. However, fair warning that attaching the covers can be a pain so if you have to detach cables often, the screwed in covers can be a problem. If you have a set up like mine that won't really change often, it works well. If you can, I would suggest having 2 people set up the cable management. One to hold down the cover in place and the other to screw it in. I did it myself just fine though. The range of motion is great for my needs, but please note that I tried stacking my monitors and it didn't quite work. I would say it's 1 to 2 inches shy of properly stacking them. Overall, a great looking set of dual monitor arms. The extra ports on the base are a cool feature that do work, but I haven't had much use of it yet. Love that they had a white option to match my set up too. These are a little pricey, but they're really worth it!

You will be hard pressed to find an equal or better product regardless of the price.

Review of AVLT Dual 13"-35" Monitor Arm Desk Mount I do not usually rate items, except for products that are exceptional or are provided by a vendor that is above all others. I looked at this item several times, because the price was $100 less than my five year old dual arm could not raise the 38” monitor more that 8” from the desk surface and barely keep my wiring hidden. Finally, the website for AVLT convinced me to place the order for the AVLT-DM41-1, Dual 13"-35" Monitor Arm Desk Mount. I was not disappointed. The quality and finish of the aluminum mount is space age quality, the manual acceptable (ilea type); most important the I can raise my 38” monitor to a perfect ergonomic height. My monitors are a Dell 38” U3818DW, (larger than 13” to 35” range) and a Dell 24” U2412M, U. for each I use the factory power cable, DP to DP display port 6 foot cables and high speed USB 3 cables for each monitor. The assembly went without a hitch, no problem hiding the heavy cables that I use, my only problem was that my was not a C-clamp, attaching the hex bolts to the base from the underside of my desk was difficult; t would had been easier had they used a stud bolts to clamp the unit down. The arm springs had no problem supporting my 38” monito, the unit is so sturdy I expect to receive years of service. I strongly recommend this item because of value, quality and design. You will be hard pressed to find an equal or better product regardless of the price.

Great product
Color: White-Mount
Amazing product. It’s perfect. Tried a few other dual monitor arms and they sucked and didn’t hold up the monitors. This one is amazing and aesthetically pleasing. Well worth the money. All parts included. Large range of motion, you just have to loosen the screws to make it easier to move or tighten to keep everything still. Perfect size and provides all my amount of desk space back.
