Strawberry Tree Seeds (Arbutus unedo)

The Arbutus unedo, commonly known as the Strawberry Tree or Irish Killarney Strawberry Tree, is a highly ornamental evergreen shrub or small tree prized for its unusual red fruits, attractive bark, and year-round beauty. Native to the Mediterranean region and parts of western Europe, this rare species has long been cultivated for both ornamental landscaping and edible fruit production.

Known for its multi-season interest, the Strawberry Tree produces clusters of delicate urn-shaped white to pale pink flowers from autumn into winter while simultaneously displaying bright orange-red fruits from the previous season. This unique overlapping display of flowers and fruit makes it one of the most visually distinctive evergreen shrubs in cultivation.

The compact dense branching structure is complemented by glossy dark green foliage and striking cinnamon-colored bark that becomes increasingly ornamental with age. Mature fruits are round and textured with a knobby surface, gradually ripening into deep orange-red berries.

The edible fruit has a sweet mildly tangy flavor often compared to apricot, guava, and other wild Mediterranean fruits with subtle earthy undertones. Fruits may be eaten fresh or used in preserves, beverages, and traditional regional recipes.

🌱 Growing & Care Information

Light: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Well-drained soil; adaptable to poor soils
Water: Moderate to low; drought tolerant once established
Growth: Slow to moderate-growing evergreen shrub or small tree
Climate: Mediterranean and mild temperate climates

Strawberry Tree is naturally adapted to dry summer conditions and performs exceptionally well in warm coastal climates. It thrives in USDA zones 8–11 outdoors and can also be successfully grown in large containers in cooler climates when protected during winter.

This species is especially valued for ornamental gardens, edible landscapes, wildlife plantings, and Mediterranean-style landscapes due to its evergreen foliage and year-round ornamental interest.

USDA Hardiness Zones: 8–11

Strawberry Tree Germination:

Strawberry Tree seeds have a notoriously very low rate of germination not passing 4.2%, caused by the presence of certain inhibitory substances diffused by the fruit. A 30 day "cold stratification" & using a heated propagator to keep temperatures at an optimal warmth is a Must for Germination of the Strawberry Tree Seeds. Seed germination is strongly influenced by the temperature and shows an optimal temperature of 68°F that gives an appx. rate of 19.2%. When set to a higher temperature of 86°F seeds recorded a much higher rate of 18% germination. Needless to say, after cold stratification, keep the temperature at 86+ degrees F for optimal chances.

1) Soak seeds in "Warm Water" for 6 days. Be sure to change water Daily.

2) Place the seeds in a moist paper towel and place inside of a zip lock bag. Cut a few tiny holes into bag. Then to cold stratify, place in the fridge for 30 days. This will help increase germination rates greatly. Be sure to keep them "moist" (not wet) while stratifying.

2) Sow seeds on top of a Well Draining Seed Starting Mix & Lightly cover with a thin layer of sand as they need light to germinate. Use a grow lamp, or keep in a sunny window.

3) Use a spray bottle to keep the soil "moist", not wet.

4) Patience is required as germination times are erratic as with any Tropical seed. Seeds will germinate anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks and are More than Worth the Wait!

Must Read - True Strategy for the Age of AI
Format: Hardcover
I'm a management consultant and an entrepreneur reading these kinds of books for more than 30 years. It took me only 5 days to read this book. But it took me another 5 days to summarize all my notes and thoughts and share with my team. And I think it will take me more than 5 years to implement and build everything inspired and suggested by this book. Sangeet explains in a very fluent, structured and captivating way, with real world examples, how business models change, how AI plays a critical role. We does eliminate all the hype about AI fiction but he focused on AI facts. Strategy is not about how to invest in AI, it's about "where to play" and "how to win." Read this great book, get inspired, and change everything you think you knew about AI and business strategy.

Reshuffle Just Reshuffled My Perspective
Format: Paperback
Reshuffle completely reshaped how I think about Gen AI and disruption. Sangeet Paul Choudary does a brilliant job of weaving real-life examples with practical frameworks, making big shifts in tech feel both understandable and actionable. What I loved most is how he pushes the conversation beyond the usual “AI won’t take your job, but someone who knows AI will.” Instead, he asks the tougher question: what if the job itself no longer exists because of AI? It’s bold, thought-provoking, and incredibly relevant for anyone navigating change right now. This book feels less like theory and more like a roadmap — one that left me reflecting on my own work and excited about the opportunities ahead. Highly recommend, especially if you’re looking for fresh ways to think about leadership in the age of AI.

Overall sound thesis worthy of thoughtful consideration
Format: Kindle
Choudary’s book has the tag line, “Who wins when AI restacks the knowledge economy.” While the book is annoying in sections, vague in others, and prone to jargon in yet more locations, the basic thesis is sound and compelling. It’s worth considering. Choudary’s main argument is that the winners after AI technology is widely adopted will be those who take a systems view of their business rather than simply upgrading individual elements within it. He backs this with several examples based on past technological disruptions and hypothetical case studies. He argues that the best advantages from AI will come from improved communication and managing risk. He supports these arguments reasonably well within the chapters. He also includes 10 Takeaways at the end of each chapter, which is extremely helpful for recapping and making sure the reader understood the thesis. What gets annoying is Choudary goes back to the same case studies again and again and again. I reached the point of saying, “the horse is dead. Please stop flogging it.” Next, some of his arguments about things like “managing risk” are vague—there’s not enough about specific risks to be useful, which leaves AI as a magic wand to wave. Finally, as with many business writers, Choudary occasionally (but not overwhelmingly) drops into jargon like “technological solutionism.” Overall, I recommend the book. It’s made me think, even as I struggle to apply the principles to my own business.
