Philodendron 'Splendid' is a stunning plant hybrid that results from the cross-pollination of two different species, namely Philodendron melanochrysum and Philodendron verrucosum. The plant is an evergreen vine that features large, heart-shaped, velvety leaves with vibrant green colouration and striking silver veins that shimmer in the light.
Philodendron melanochrysum is native to the rainforests of South America, specifically in the countries of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It grows as an epiphyte, which means it grows on other plants for support rather than in soil. In the wild, it is often found growing on trees, logs, and rocks, where it can climb and spread its large leaves to capture sunlight.
Philodendron verrucosum is also native to the rainforests of South America, specifically in the countries of Colombia and Ecuador. Like melanochrysum, it is an epiphyte that grows on other plants for support. It prefers shaded areas and can often be found growing in the understory of the rainforest, where it receives filtered light.
Both species are adapted to grow in warm, humid environments with ample rainfall, making them well-suited for indoor cultivation in homes and offices with similar environmental conditions. When grown indoors, Philodendron 'Splendid' will thrive in a bright, indirect light location with consistent moisture and regular fertilization during the growing season.
To care for Philodendron 'Splendid,' you should place it in a spot with bright, indirect light and avoid direct sunlight. The plant likes to be kept moist but not waterlogged, so make sure to water it when the top inch of soil feels dry. It is best to fertilize it every 4-6 weeks during the growing season, which is from spring to autumn.
In terms of styling, Philodendron 'Splendid' looks stunning when grown in a hanging basket or trained to climb up a moss pole or trellis. The plant is also a great addition to any indoor jungle or tropical-themed decor, adding a touch of lush greenery to any space. You can even mix and match it with other philodendron varieties to create a beautiful and diverse plant collection.
Overall, Philodendron 'Splendid' is an excellent choice for any plant lover looking for a unique and beautiful plant to add to their collection. With the right care and styling, it can thrive and bring a touch of the rainforest into your home.
