Anacampseros rufescens f. variegata

Low clumping stems and tightly packed fleshy leaves give Anacampseros rufescens f. variegata its compact succulent shape. Because the plant stores water in its leaves and roots, it needs a sharply drained potting mix that dries well between waterings.

The plant can form a compact mat over time, with fine white hairs or filaments adding texture between the leaves. Individual leaves can differ in pattern and colour, with pale, cream or pinkish sections varying from one growth point to the next.

Fleshy leaves, hairs and roots

  • Small succulent body: The species stays low and compact in a pot.
  • Mat-forming growth: Short stems can branch and create a small clump over time.
  • Spiralled leaves: Fleshy leaves are arranged densely around the stems.
  • Fine white hairs: Filament-like hairs can appear between leaves and along the stems.
  • Strong roots: A taproot and extensive roots need a free-draining potting mix.
  • Variegated foliage: Pale sections can mark faster in harsh sun and need careful light exposure.

Dryland roots and pot growth

Anacampseros rufescens is native from the Cape Provinces to Free State in South Africa and belongs to Anacampserotaceae. The species is a dwarf succulent from dry shrubland and desert-biome conditions, and that background is reflected in its compact, water-storing growth.

In a pot, the roots need sharp drainage and air. A heavy organic mix or frequent watering can damage the root system before the leaves show obvious stress. Bright light keeps the plant compact, while harsh direct sun can mark pale variegated tissue more quickly than green sections.

Care for a variegated Anacampseros

  • Light: Give bright light with protection from harsh midday sun, especially on plants with large pale leaf sections.
  • Water: Let the substrate dry well between waterings. Water more carefully in cooler or darker periods.
  • Substrate: Use a mineral, fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with very little water retention around the roots.
  • Pot: A small pot with drainage suits the compact root zone better than an oversized container.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm and protected from cold, damp conditions.
  • Growth: Rotate the plant if needed so the short stems receive even light and stay compact.

Succulent stress signals

  • Soft base or roots: Usually caused by too much water, a dense mix or a cold wet pot.
  • Stretching: Longer, looser green growth usually points to low light.
  • Scorched pale tissue: Variegated sections can mark under sudden harsh sun.
  • Shrivelled leaves: Some wrinkling can occur when dry, but repeated severe shrivelling means the roots need checking.

Handling and household safety

Keep this ornamental succulent away from pets and small children. Use clean hands or tools when removing damaged leaves, and avoid letting plant pieces contact mouths or eyes.

Species name and cultivated variegation

The accepted species name is Anacampseros rufescens (Haw.) Sweet, published in Sweet’s Hortus Britannicus in 1826. Cultivated variegated plants show the species’ compact succulent habit with spiralled fleshy leaves and pale patterned foliage.

Total waste of money
I wouldnt give it one star but had to to leave a review. Just got these balls September 8, 2025. As of today we are on our third ball, September 13. My dog only used in field for fetch. He never layed down and chewed on it. The inside of the balls came apart. I pulled off felt to show where. The ball is otherwise intact. Never had this happen to any ball I ever bought. I researched and looked for good reviews even off Amazon because my dog is a border collie and loves to fetch. This is a huge waste of of money and bad for environment

Does the job
I do like that they come in bulk and that they weren’t too expensive but I definitely don’t think the quality is that high and they’re very easily falling apart but that’s probably because they are cheap. if you have a dog that is a they will get it into little pieces very soon after they have it. So I’ve had to put them up when we are done.

Not durable
Why did you pick this product vs others?: I'm giving it 2 stars because these balls are not durable. They also don't bounce well. My dog cracks the seam easily. I will use them, but won't be purchasing again.

Falls apart within minutes!
I’m a real human and person (sad I have to say that) who bought these stupid balls for my dog because tennis balls are EXPENSIVE. She chewed on them only a few times and the balls split in half into two hemispheres right away. Plus, she could rip the felt off the entire ball in less than an hour. Absolutely terrible and I truly threw money away because I threw away the original packaging and so I can’t get my money back! Very disappointing and sad :-(. Turns out that Play Again sports sells used tennis balls for $0.35 each. Sorry, Amazon. I’m getting my tennis balls from them from now on 😠
