Pink Moonstone succulents (botanical name: Pachyphytum oviferum) are a beautiful species of succulent, prized for their plump, pastel-colored leaves and soft, powdery coating. Here’s a detailed breakdown:
🌸 Overview
- Common name: Pink Moonstone
- Scientific name: Pachyphytum oviferum
- Family: Crassulaceae (the same family as echeverias and jade plants)
- Origin: Central Mexico, particularly in rocky mountain regions
🌿 Appearance
- Leaves:
- Thick, egg-shaped (hence “oviferum” — meaning “egg-bearing”)
- Pale pink to peach or lavender-gray, depending on sun exposure and temperature
- Covered with a delicate, powdery coating called farina (a natural wax that protects the plant)
- Growth:
- Grows in small clusters or rosettes
- Typically 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) tall
- Flowers:
- Appear in late winter or spring
- Small, bell-shaped blooms — usually pink, orange, or red — on slender stalks
☀️ Care Requirements
|
Condition |
Ideal Setting |
|
Light |
Bright, indirect sunlight or partial sun. Can handle full sun if gradually acclimated. Too little light = stretched, dull leaves. |
|
Water |
"Soak and dry" method — water deeply when soil is completely dry. Overwatering causes root rot. |
|
Soil |
Well-draining cactus/succulent mix with perlite or pumice. |
|
Temperature |
Prefers 65–80°F (18–27°C); not frost-tolerant below 40°F (4°C). |
|
Humidity |
Low humidity preferred — thrives in dry conditions. |
🌱 Propagation
Easily propagated from:
- Leaf cuttings: Gently twist off a healthy leaf, let it callus for a few days, and place on well-draining soil.
-
Stem cuttings: Allow to dry for several days, then plant in dry soil.
Roots will form in 2–3 weeks under bright, indirect light.
⚠️ Common Issues
- Overwatering: Causes mushy, translucent leaves.
- Sunburn: Direct, intense sunlight can scorch the leaves.
- Loss of farina: Touching the leaves removes the powdery coating — harmless, but can affect appearance.
