Coastal strength. Bonsai soul. A pine unlike any other.

Pinus thunbergii, the Japanese Black Pine, is the most important pine in Japanese culture and one of the most striking conifers available to western growers. Its dense, dark needles, dramatically textured bark, and naturally irregular growth habit make it the defining pine of Japanese gardens, coastal landscapes, and bonsai collections worldwide. Hardy, adaptable, and highly tolerant of salt spray and wind, it has proven itself in the most exposed coastal conditions imaginable. Seed-grown specimens develop the natural character and variation that grafted nursery trees rarely achieve. If you are looking to buy Japanese Black Pine seeds or grow this pine from seed, you are beginning a relationship with a tree that rewards patience and attention over decades.

  • Dramatic dark needles and irregular growth habit prized in Japanese garden design for centuries
  • Exceptionally salt-tolerant, one of the best conifers for coastal planting and seaside windbreaks
  • The most widely used pine species in traditional bonsai cultivation worldwide
  • Naturally develops rugged, textured bark with character that takes decades to achieve in other species
  • Adaptable to poor, sandy, or rocky soils and highly exposed sites

Things you probably did not know about the Japanese Black Pine

It is the pine that defines the Japanese coastline.
Groves of Japanese Black Pine planted along the Japanese coast over centuries serve as windbreaks protecting villages and rice fields from typhoon winds and salt spray. The silhouette of windswept Black Pines against a gray sea is one of the most recognized images in Japanese art and landscape painting.

Bonsai masters spend entire careers on a single tree.
Japanese Black Pine bonsai require specific summer and winter care techniques that have been refined and passed down through generations of practitioners. A well-developed Black Pine bonsai represents hundreds of hours of accumulated skill and is among the most respected art forms in Japanese culture. Some specimens in major collections are over 200 years old.

It hybridizes naturally with other pines.
Japanese Black Pine crosses readily with Japanese Red Pine to produce Pinus densiflora x thunbergii, a hybrid sometimes used in coastal plantings. Seed-grown specimens from wild-collected seeds occasionally show hybrid characteristics, adding to the natural variation that makes growing from seed rewarding.

The candles are a key feature in bonsai technique.
The new spring growth of Japanese Black Pine emerges as elongated buds called candles. Bonsai practitioners remove or cut these candles at precise times to control growth, ramification, and needle length. Mastering candle work is considered one of the foundational skills of pine bonsai.

Sleek looking and feeling wrist rest
Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Slim
5 Year Update: it finally had a tear on the corner and you can feel the gooey adhesive-like gel peak its way out. Not exactly sure how it happened. Could be my sharp nails or i may have grazed it with a box cutter while opening some packages. Keep sharp objects away from the pad! For now, i've put some clear tape over it to see how that holds. Still very useable. I got the slim one and it looks and feels great. It has a classy executive look to it and my wrists glide easily across it which is surprising since it's made out of some kind of vinyl/rubbery texture. It has a leather grain on it which actually feels similar to faux-leather. It looks as if it would be very easy to clean off if you get dirt and oil on it. That being said, my 3 caveats are: 1) it needs to be about 1 cm wider for full coverage on a standard 101 keyboard 2) I wish the size of the pad was the same all throughout the length, so that the wrist will have more to rest on when using the numpad 3) It could be squishier/ be more cushiony. It's actually quite stiff for a gel pad. It feels almost like you're resting your wrist on a leather bound book but with a thin layer of padding on it. This could be because its the slim version since there is less gel material. I would imagine the regular thickness version will be better cushioned. Overall, its a great pad and would fit right in on an executive desk because its understated and has a very leathery look and feel to it. Much classier than most gaming focused wrist rests and the price is right.

Comfortable wrist rest for intense use
Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Mechanical & Gaming, Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Mechanical & Gaming
- You don't have to own a mechanical keyboard to grab one of these bad boys. It's suitable for any full size keyboard. - This is ergonomic and really targeting gamers. The left side of the wrist rest offers more cushion for those wasd key strokes. While the right side is much smaller vs other wrist rests Kensington offers so it won't take too much desk space. So it's quite office friendly. - Huge value for money. About $7 bucks cheaper vs the standard keyboard. - Vegan leather exterior. This is the one thing that made me buy the wrist rest. As you can see from my picture, my old wrist rest is made of fabric material. They easily build up slime and all that yuckiness when you type for long period of time. It's so hard to clean up. The leather material is just one wipe away. - Super soft and comfortable. My old wrist rest is hardened memory foam. It's not deformed after years or using, which I appreciate. But it doesn't provide much comfort vs this gel pad wrist rest. I'm so happy I made the switch and bought this. - For whoever said this is stiff or firm for their taste, they obviously haven't used other memory foam wrist rests before. So if you want soft, but not too squishy wrist rest, look expensive for office use, or survive abuse for home use, look no further.

Great except for the bottom
Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Slim
Kensington stuff is always good. I’ve been using it for over two decades. This wrist rest seemed like the best choice for my Apple Magic Keyboard. And it probably is. My complaint is the bottom. It’s made with the assumption you want it in a fixed location on your desk, so the underside is sticky. On the other hand, if you don’t want to leave it stationary, the white backing paper is too slippery. I’d have MUCH preferred a textured rubber underside that helps it stay in place than this. Also, it’s really really black. If you have dandruff, you’re going to notice it falling on here.

Desk Hoteling: Portable Comfort
Size: Keyboard Wrist Rest (Pack of 1), Style: Slim & Compact
New to the desk hoteling scene, I’ve had to find easily transportable ways to increase my comfort level. This has survived multiple backpack edits, which says a ton about this little wrist rest. I love that it is not cloth so I can wipe it down at the end of the day, but it doesn’t stick to your skin. It is the perfect size and thickness for my use. It wasn’t cheap, but it is holding up very well even with the constant travel. This is worth the extra bulk in the laptop backpack.
