Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' | Fast EU shipping | Grown with love in the EU | Pet-safe: ❌
Summary: Deep, velvety-almost-black heart-shaped leaves etched with silvery veins bring dramatic elegance to your indoor jungle — while staying compact and tailored for European apartments.
✨ Why You'll Love Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet'
- Rich, near-black foliage with luminous silver veins for high contrast beauty
- Compact size — perfect for shelves, plant stands, or windowsills in German apartments
- Gives designer aesthetic with low footprint, ideal for modern interiors
- Native to Borneo, but happy in cozy indoor European spaces
🌞 Light & Placement
Loves bright, indirect light — an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while low light will mute its signature colors.
💧 Water & Humidity
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feel dry. Avoid letting it sit in soggy soil. Prefers 50%+ humidity — perfect for bathrooms or with a nearby humidifier during dry German winters.
🪴 Soil & Potting
Thrives in a chunky, airy mix: standard potting soil blended with perlite, orchid bark, or pumice. Use small pots with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
🐾 Toxicity & Safety
Not safe for pets or children if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate. Keep out of reach of curious paws and little hands.
🌱 Growth & Propagation
Slow to moderate grower. Stay compact at 15–30 cm tall. Propagate by gently dividing rhizomes in spring or early summer for best success.
📆 Seasonal & Special Care
Reduce watering in winter and keep away from drafts. Expect slower growth during darker months — normal for this tropical beauty.
🐛 Common Issues
- Yellowing leaves = overwatering or poor drainage
- Crispy edges = low humidity, especially during heating season
- Watch for spider mites or mealybugs — wipe leaves regularly and isolate if pests appear
🧬 Botanical Background
Alocasia reginula, meaning "little queen," is a rare species from the Araceae family, native to limestone-rich forest areas in Borneo. Popular worldwide for its unique foliage and compact form.
