Senecio serpens - Blue Chalksticks
Senecio serpens, commonly known as Blue Chalksticks, is a low-growing, evergreen succulent admired for its compact, trailing habit and striking powdery blue, finger-like foliage. This drought-tolerant plant is ideal for creating texture and colour contrast in rock gardens, borders, or containers. Growing to a height of 15–30 cm, it forms a dense, spreading mat, adding a modern and sculptural aesthetic to any landscape.
Position
Blue Chalksticks thrives in full sun to partial shade, performing best in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil. It is highly drought-tolerant and perfect for coastal gardens, xeriscaping, or areas with poor soil conditions. Hardy to light frost, it is suitable for temperate, coastal, and subtropical climates.
Growth
This fast-growing succulent reaches a mature height of 15–30 cm with a spread of 30–60 cm, forming a dense, trailing or mounding habit. Its striking blue-gray foliage makes it an excellent choice for ground cover, rockeries, or as a standout feature in mixed succulent arrangements and hanging baskets.
Planting Guide
Blue Chalksticks grows best in well-drained soil, such as sandy or cactus mixes. Plant year round, spacing plants about 30 cm apart for a seamless ground cover. For container planting, use a high-quality succulent mix and position the container in a sunny or semi-shaded spot. Water thoroughly after planting, ensuring good drainage to prevent root rot.
Plant Care
Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings to avoid overwatering. Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season to promote healthy growth. Prune lightly to remove any damaged or leggy foliage and to maintain its compact shape. Protect from excessive frost or prolonged wet conditions, as these can harm the plant.
