Dracaena (Sansevieria) trifasciata 'Laurentii'

Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii' is the familiar yellow-edged snake plant, with tall sword-shaped leaves rising in firm fans from the base. Each leaf has a deep green centre marked with softer grey-green horizontal banding, framed by clear yellow margins that make the leaf shape stand out even from a distance. The result is strong, recognisable and clear in a pot.

This cultivar brings height in a slim space. It grows from a rhizome, so new leaves appear as basal shoots beside the older fans. Over time, a young plant becomes a fuller clump as fresh leaves push up from the base and add more layers to the yellow-edged outline.

Classic yellow margins on tall sword leaves

  • Leaf shape: Tall, sword-like blades create a strong vertical line.
  • Colour contrast: Yellow margins frame the banded green centre of each leaf.
  • Growth base: The rhizome sends up new leaves beside older fans, gradually thickening the clump.
  • Indoor placement: It gives height while taking up limited floor or shelf space.
  • Longevity: Mature leaves stay firm for a long time when the root zone is kept warm, airy and dry between waterings.

Rhizome storage and dry intervals

Dracaena trifasciata is a rhizomatous species from seasonally dry tropical parts of Africa. 'Laurentii' stores water in thick leaves and depends on oxygen around the rhizome after watering. The plant handles dry intervals well because the leaves and underground structure are built for moisture storage.

'Laurentii' keeps the strong leaf form of the species and adds bright marginal colouring. The yellow edges are part of the cultivar’s visual identity, while the grey-green striping across the blade gives the centre more depth. Mature leaves can become tall and rigid, so the pot should be stable enough to balance the top growth.

Growth is usually slow indoors, especially in winter or away from bright windows. New shoots may appear narrow at first before expanding into stronger leaves. A slightly snug pot keeps the rhizome stable and lets the substrate dry at a predictable pace.

Care for tall yellow-edged leaves

  • Light: In bright indirect light, new leaves stay sturdier and the contrast remains clearer. In lower light, the plant grows more slowly and the pot needs longer drying time.
  • Watering: Wait until the potting mix has dried deeply, then water evenly and let the pot drain fully. The next watering should come after the lower mix has dried again.
  • Substrate: Use a free-draining mix with pumice, lava rock, coarse sand or fine bark. Mineral structure keeps air around the rhizome.
  • Pot choice: A pot with drainage holes and enough weight for tall leaves keeps the plant steady.
  • Temperature: Keep it in normal indoor warmth, ideally around 18–27 °C. Warm conditions help the root zone recover after watering.
  • Humidity: Average household humidity is sufficient.
  • Feeding: Use a diluted balanced or cactus fertiliser during active growth. Light feeding matches the plant’s slow rhizome growth.
  • Repotting: Repot when new shoots crowd the pot, the container starts to distort or the substrate has broken down. A modest size increase is enough.
  • Propagation: Division preserves the yellow-edged pattern. Leaf cuttings can root and may produce green plants.

Yellow-edge stress signs

  • Soft leaf bases: Inspect the substrate depth, cover pot and rhizome area. Softness near the soil line usually means the lower plant stayed damp for too long.
  • Wrinkled leaves: Check the root system before adding more water. Dryness and damaged roots can both produce a wrinkled leaf surface.
  • Brown margins: Review irregular watering, mineral buildup, old knocks and cold air exposure. Remove only the dry edge if trimming is needed.
  • Leaning leaves: Rotate the pot and check whether new shoots are pressing older leaves sideways. Mature plants may need a heavier pot for a steady base.
  • Paused growth: Growth often slows in winter. Check light and warmth first, then adjust feeding during active growth if needed.

Safety for shared spaces

Keep Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii' out of reach of pets and small children who may chew the leaves. Snake plants contain saponins, which can cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea in cats and dogs if ingested. The tall, firm leaves also need a secure spot where the pot stays steady.

Botanical name of the classic snake plant

The accepted botanical name for the species is Dracaena trifasciata, while Sansevieria trifasciata remains the older name still widely used in plant shops and care guides. The genus name Dracaena comes from the Greek drakaina, meaning “female dragon”, a name historically linked to red resin in some dragon tree relatives. The species epithet trifasciata means “three-banded” or “marked with three bands”, referring to the banded pattern associated with the species.

Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii' has tall green leaves, yellow margins and one of the most recognisable snake plant forms.

Don't toss mop pad holders after a pooptastrophie & take a pic or video for proof
Color: White, Size: X60 Max Ultra Complete
I’ve been using the DREAME X60 Max Ultra Complete Robot Vacuum and Mop for a while now, and it genuinely felt like a major upgrade from previous robot cleaners. The first thing that stands out is the 35,000Pa suction power—it handles fine cat and dog hair, even on plush carpets. Compared to other models I've had, the cleaning performance is noticeably stronger and more consistent. The ultra-thin 3.13-inch design is another big win. It reaches under most beds, sofas, and low furniture where dust usually accumulates. It takes some time to program these details into the vacuum. I was very impressed by the fully automated system: • Self-emptying dustbin • Automatic water refilling • Mop self-cleaning This significantly reduces manual maintenance—you can go days (or longer) without needing to intervene. Until one Sunday evening, I decided to run the unit in the bathroom I share with my cats' automatic litter box, sight unseen. My cat pooped on the floor right in front of her litter box. Over the past two months, the unit has been good about avoiding wires, my black UGG slippers (the unit thought was an uncleanable mess), and my animals. As I was preparing dinner, I noticed the unit sounded a bit strange and clicky. Cat poo wafted through the air as I saw the unit flinging feces into the air and across the area in a sand-like spray. I thought the unit sucked up the poo, but it was mostly dispersed throughout the bathroom floor, baseboards, and walls. The poo was partially dry when the machine discovered it. By the time I discovered the machine, the mop pads and wheels were caked. I put on some gloves, pulled the mop pads off, tossed them in the trash, and proceeded to clean the machine carefully and gently for the next two hours. The next day, I called customer service, and when I asked for them to send me replacement mop pad holders, they said don't worry about it, we will send a new unit after you provide the info we request in an email. It wasn't until the next day that I got an email back asking for pictures and video of the pootastrophie. I didn't take a picture or video because I trusted that the machine caught it on video and labeled the poo as large particles or something. The next time I logged in, the history and video of Sunday night's ordeal were erased. I'm not sure if there was an update. I received an email today saying they don't have the mop pad holders; instead, they offered to give me more mop pads and dust bags. I can't use the mop function, which is half of the reason I got the unit. **** Update Friday, May 8, 2026: My claim was escalated after I refused the extra mop pad holders and dustbags nix the mop pad holder. They are following through with replacing the unit and returning the pooptastrophy unit for testing. Will post updates.

Already impressed after the first few runs
Color: Black, Size: X60 Max Ultra Complete
I opened this almost immediately after it arrived because I’d been wanting to replace my older robot vacuum for a while. Setup was pretty straightforward and the app connected faster than I expected. The first thing I noticed was how accurate the mapping is. It mapped my apartment surprisingly well on the first run and didn’t randomly bump into everything like my previous one did. Navigation feels smooth and organized instead of chaotic. Cleaning performance has been really good so far too. It picked up a lot more dust and pet hair than I realized was on the floor, and the mopping feature actually leaves the floor looking fresh instead of just lightly wiping it. The self-emptying and self-cleaning features are honestly the best part for me. I barely have to think about it once it starts running. Feels like one of those purchases that actually saves time every day. So far I’m really happy with it and already wondering why I waited this long to get one.

Better after replacement
Color: White, Size: X60 Max Ultra Complete
I have tried to like it but it just keeps disappointing me. For the price I really expected to be able to handle my 1 floor apartment. It refuses to clean under my couches (they are 5” off the floor so enough space), it has mopped my carpet and it keeps getting lost. It couldn’t find the base and it was right in front of it for about an hour until I finally just manually put it back. I’ve only had it running for about a week and I’ve played with the settings and tried so many different things to get it to just throughly clean my floors. It is pretty and when it does clean it’s effective and it does work on my shag rug which is a feat. I just don’t trust it to work properly when I’m not home, which sucks. Edit: Dreame reached out and tried to troubleshoot the vacuum. After the vacuum was still acting weird so they offered to replace it and a discount, which I will be taking advantage of. I really want it to work since it has powerful suction and 2 brushes. The brushes are truly tangle free, I didn’t find a single hair on the brushes after 2 weeks and I shed a lot. Plus it looks so pretty. I’ll give another update after the new vacuum. Edit: The new vacuum is working much better. It cleaned better under my couch and has had to errors. It started to even clean even more thoroughly under the couch when I pinned up the fabric that's under the couch. I would suggest to do this so the sensors can more effectively see. I'm glad I gave it another chance.

Great value
Color: 14Pcs Eufy E25/E28/C28 Bags
These worked flawlessly with my eufy vacuum, no suction issues or anything. They seem to be just as durable, plus the same size as the name brand ones but at a fraction of the prize. It was very easy to use them. Just pop the old one out and pop this one in. Over all I’d say these are a great value for the money. Same size, same quality, much better value.
