The Hidden Wars of Germania!

Though the long shadow of Rome has stretched far beyond its own borders, its reach has yet failed to cover all of Germania. Those untamed lands, filled with dark and forbidding forests, are still held by countless fiercely independent native tribes. Many have been forced to bend the knee before the banners of Rome, whilst others have fought bitterly to retain their ways of life—often fruitlessly.

But Germanic priests and sages tell tales of other forces lurking in these lands: darker shapes than marching legionaries move between the trees of those ancient forests, and rumors swirl in towns and villages of nightmares lurking beyond their walls.

Beyond the eyes of civilization, and known only to a select few, inexplicable monsters only whispered of in legend prowl, seeking to feast on the unwary. Fetid spawn of Mormo swarm and multiply in foul breeding sites, protected by sinister cults whose members are visited in dreams by creatures from beyond the stars. The immortal warrior-chieftain Herjan has gathered his forces to dominate the native Germanic tribes, his efforts fuelled by either enlightenment or madness born from Atlantean relics. As darkness looms and shadows gather, he schemes and plots to send his substantial military might against Rome.

Here, in this ancient and mysterious land, the Hidden Wars play out in full. Those brave heroes willing to confront the darkness will claim hidden knowledge and eternal glory—but terror, insanity, and doom await those who fail.

This 185-page supplement includes a wealth of information for Cohors Cthulhu gamemasters running campaigns venturing into Germania from the Roman-occupied town of Laurium. This includes information on the many tribes of Germania, details on Herjan’s Horde, an expanded Adversary roster, and 8 self-contained adventures taking place in Germania itself.

  • Castrum Primum,” written by Richard August, detailing a lost fortress that has become a place of horror.
  • Stars of Ill Omen,” written by Stephen Michael Dipesa, featuring an incursion of Mi-Go in the Germanic hills.
  • The Harvest,” written by Anna Everts, where a tribal settlement is beset by a mysterious ailment.
  • The Shield of Aeneas,” written by Thomas Roussel, featuring the impossible return of an ancient hero making wild claims.
  • Anno Diaboli,” written by Michael Duxbury, where an attempt to impose a rigid calendar upon a tribal people has unforeseen consequences.
  • Between Scylla and Charybdis,” written by Dave Semark, where a holy festival provides the spark to set ablaze a religious conflict.
  • Against the Chaos Gate,” written by M.G. Manley, where PCs enter the gladiatorial arena and eventually discover an ancient buried peril.
  • Aurum Habet Tolosanum,” written by Dave Semark, featuring a risky foray sneaking into the heart of Herjan’s Horde to recover gold stolen from Rome.

Embitterment in regard to AI
Format: Kindle
AI is one of the most important innovations in the last decades. But the author of this book claims that the current application of AI is bad. It requires computers that use rare material, the mining of which harms the environment, and it uses inaccurate training data, to list some of the arguments presented in this book. But when considering these drawbacks against AI's blessing (automatic translation, contribution to medical research, etc.), the criticism seems to be not justified. The author blames AI for searching order in an infinitely complex world (in the Conclusion chapter), but she ignores that this is exactly what science does. The book also includes many interesting reviews of the history of science and AI. I enjoyed very much reading these reviews.

Engaging study of the underpinnings of AI
Format: Kindle
This “atlas” maps what is often forgotten when discussing AI: material needs like the extraction of lithium and other minerals from the earth with the destruction of nature that requires and the workers, as well as the epistemological constraints of classification and the false proxies of data. The book is engagingly written and easy to follow while richly sourced. I’ll probably assign at least a couple of chapters to undergrads in our digital culture program. I would have loved an audio book version - but I listened to it using automatic text to speech on my phone and it was surprisingly not awful. This is the first time I’ve done that with a whole book.

A Critical Perspective on the Hype and Reality of AI
Format: Hardcover
Of the many books I have read on AI, having been interested in the topic for 35 years, this is perhaps the most profound. When I read the abstract I thought the goals for the book were going to be almost impossible to achieve. But Kate Crawford has succeeded wonderfully. I find myself referring back to marked sections of the book — and perhaps most importantly questioning some long-held beliefs I have had on the topics. I have shared the book with friends with less time invested in the topic — and they were equally glowing. I hope this finds its way onto the summer reading lists of people with far-flung interests.

My grandson loves these books!
Format: Hardcover
These books are a big hit with my grandson. They are full of facts about each animal and by comparing strengths and weaknesses determine which would overcome the other. He’s learning so much about animals’ behavior and survival skills.
