A limited, signed edition of Barry Windsor-Smith's Monsters. Featuring a specially designed and signed page printed on vellum, this edition is limited to 1,200 copies.

Barry Windsor-Smith has for over three decades been working on Monsters. Almost twenty years ago I read an unfinished version and was shocked and astonished at the power and delicacy of the storytelling, by the honesty of the family relationships, by the feeling that this was being created by someone willing to reveal too much and go too deep in order to tell the story he had to tell. That it is completed and that it will be released to the world is something that's genuinely exciting for any of us who care about comics, or stories, or the place where art and imagination meet. -- Neil Gaiman, New York Times best-selling author

What we have on view here is nothing less than a first-class master storyteller at his peak, telling a novel-length story in a novel's length, slowly and deliberately paced with stunningly beautiful black and white line art every step of the way. -- "Forces of Geek"

This exquisitely illustrated epic bursts with emotion, insight, and empathy. Five decades into his already influential career, Windsor-Smith has created his magnum opus. -- "Library Journal (starred review)"

Consummate craftsman Barry Windsor-Smith presents an epic tale of love, horror, revenge, and redemption in his outstanding graphic novel. ...Years in the making, Monsters is a graphic narrative masterpiece and a haunting examination of the lingering effects of evil. -- "Foreword Magazine"

Monsters combines gothic horror with comic book tropes to produce a melting pot of twisted drama, moral dilemmas, and unrelenting brilliance from the opening onwards. -- "Monkeys Fighting Robots"

The year is 1964. Bobby Bailey doesn't realize he is about to fulfill his tragic destiny when he walks into a US Army recruitment office to join up. Close-mouthed, damaged, innocent, trying to forget a past and looking for a future, it turns out that Bailey is the perfect candidate for a secret U.S. government experimental program, an unholy continuation of a genetics program that was discovered in Nazi Germany nearly 20 years earlier in the waning days of World War II. Bailey's only ally and protector, Sergeant McFarland, intervenes, which sets off a chain of cascading events that spin out of everyone's control. As the titular monsters of the title multiply, becoming real and metaphorical, literal and ironic, the story reaches its emotional and moral reckoning.

Monsters is the legendary project Barry Windsor-Smith has been working on for over 35 years. A 380-page tour de force of visual storytelling, Monsters' narrative canvas is both vast and deep: part familial drama, part political thriller, part metaphysical journey, it is an intimate portrait of individuals struggling to reclaim their lives and an epic political odyssey across two generations of American history. Trauma, fate, conscience, and redemption are just a few of the themes that intersect in the most ambitious graphic novel of Windsor-Smith's career.

Monsters is rendered in Windsor-Smith's impeccable pen-and-ink technique, the visual storytelling with its sensitivity to gesture and composition is the most sophisticated of the artist's career. There are passages of heartbreaking tenderness, of excruciating pain, and devastating violence. It is surely one of the most intense graphic novels ever drawn.

Barry Windsor-Smith began his career by drawing mainstay Marvel characters such as the X-Men and Daredevil in 1969 in the traditional Marvel style. However, in 1971 he broke from the Marvel formula when he started drawing the Conan series, turning heads with a fresh and controversial stylistic approach and winning numerous industry awards. Part of a young generation of artists that included compatriots Berni Wrightson, Mike Kaluta, and Jeff Jones, Windsor-Smith proceeded to carve an independent path for himself. In the '90s, he conceived, wrote, and drew three independent series, The Freebooters, Young Gods, and The Paradox-Man. In 1999 and 2001 Fantagraphics published Opus volumes 1 and 2, autobiographical coffee table art books. Monsters is his first book since The Freebooters (2005). He currently lives in New York.

Would be 5 stars if it glowed brighter
Color: blue-glow, Color: blue-glow
SHORT VERSION Yes buy this! Just don’t expect it to glow very bright. COLOR I thought about getting the Black, Navy, or Mint Green, but instead I got the ZBlue bc of the glow-in-the-dark feature. I like it, but it doesn’t glow that bright when exposed to a light bulb. You can see the pic I posted that’s almost black, that’s after holding it next to a bright light for a few minutes. But when I exposed it to the sunshine through a window for a few minutes, it glowed MUCH brighter (see the other glow pic). But, how are you going to expose it to the sun when its dark outside? When my wife first saw the color, she said “that’s stupid” haha. But I think it’s growing on her. For these photos, I put it on a white background, with DeWalt Yellow and Kobalt Blue next to it so you can see it’s true color. I wouldn’t buy this for its glowing feature, just buy the color you like. Even at night, there’s usually too much ambient light in the room, from the TV or lamps, for this faint glow to be seen. FIT & FEEL It feels like super soft silicone rubber, I like it. Feels very high quality. The remote slid in really easy, and I thought it might be too big, and the remote would fall out, but it hasn’t. The texture feels great, and the thicker pads on top and bottom help you hold onto the remote. It doesn’t slide between the couch cushions anymore, and that’s really why I bought it! An added bonus is that now I can immediately see which side is the top of the remote! Before, I sometimes hit the wrong button bc I wouldn’t realize I was holding the remote upside down. Overall, I’m definitely glad I bought this.

Fantastic Fintie: Saving My Apple Remote
Not a lot to say about this little case other than I absolutely love it! The red is a great color and somewhat matches the general color theme of my TV area. I don't have the smallest hands around and often worried about dropping this (very expensive) remote. I was so afraid of my Apple TV remote slipping and breaking, getting lost, etc that I actually wrapped it up in a microfiber cloth whenever I wasn't using it. On top of that I often picked it up upside-down which is easy for me to do as I'm partially blind and didn't always feel for either the volume button, top sensor, or lightning port to orient it properly. I'd be swiping on the bottom, thinking it's the top, until I realized with chagrin that I had been touching the inert piece of plastic that is the bottom third of the remote's face for the last five seconds while wondering why my Apple TV wasn't talking to me or making any noise the way it was supposed to. This case solves all of these problems. The remote is easy to hold onto, I don't feel like it'll get easily lost, and I never mess up its orientation anymore. Nice job, Finty. Edit as of March 10, 2020 I saw the helpful votes this review has received, so I figured I'd post an update for you guys! I always appreciate reviews that keep potential buyers up to date, giving them an idea of how a product holds up over time. I got this little case 3 years ago. It's still doing great! It still serves its purpose beautifully and I am very happy with it! It's traveled with me and my Apple TV from home to a college dorm room and to vacations too! It hasn't stretched out and still holds the remote secure. Visually, it makes the remote easier to find and tactually it's easier for me to orient so I don't swipe ineffectually on the wrong end of the remote like I did before.

Much Easier to Handle
Color: Black
First let me say that I didn't want to have to buy a case for my remote. It's such a beautiful device that I hate to hide it but unfortunately I have to because it's just not very practical to use. First, it's so slim that it's hard to pick up from a flat surface. Second, it's so slippery that I was afraid it would fall out of my hands. And third, I have tile floors so if it ever fell, I know it would shatter. The Fintie case solves all of these problems. It gives the remote just the right amount of thickness and grippiness to make it easy to pick up and use, and I feel like it if ever fell onto my tile floor, the Fintie case would protect it from chips and shatters. Admittedly, the case does detract from the beauty of the remote, but it does make the remote more usable day-to-day. And in a sense it protects the beauty of the remote because a shattered one wouldn't look very nice now would it?
