Hosta ventricosa

Origin: China (via New York)

Improvement status: Cultivated wild material

Seeds per packet: ~50

BOTANICAL SAMPLE - NOT GERMINATION TESTED

Life cycle: Perennial

Hosta is a tragically underutilized perennial edible vegetable, highly sought after by foragers in its native China, but typically left to look pretty and feed deer and other grazers in temperate gardens throughout the world. The leaves are edible (and most tender and delicious when freshly unfurled), but it's the spring shoots that are especially delicious. Their flavor is quite similar to asparagus, and with a very slight mucilaginousness (though significantly less than okra). They're fantastic for pickling, and you can remove two-thirds of the shoots from a mature plant in spring and not even notice they're gone once the plant has fully emerged. Hostas are also fantastic companion plants for trees, grown around the base, since they suppress weeds completely but have a relatively shallow root system themselves (and those roots have been used in traditional medicine as a toothache remedy!). And since they can thrive just as well in shade as in the sun, everyone should be growing hosta!

Our seed comes from the good folks at Sheffield's Seed Company in Locke, NY. Grown in New York.

GROWING TIPS: Sow seed 1/16th inch deep (seed requires some light for germination). Easily divided with a shovel once mature to spread it around. Makes a great ground cover.

Super fun toy!!
This is such a fun toy! My dog loves running after it. The shape is perfect for a medium sized dog . He isn't into the round balls, but this football shape is easier for him. I love the automatic movement because it don't have to contactly be throwing it.

So Far So Good
I adopted a young adult dog less than 2 weeks ago. She had spent over 12 hours a day in a crate and has excessive energy and anxiety built up. She is a strong chewer. So far, out of 6 toys, this is the only one still in one piece. It appears sturdy and extra bouncy. So much better than regular tennis balls.

My dogs favorite!
My dogs love these! They will play all day if you'd let them, these balls are their favorites. I use the chuck-it handle and they get tons of exercise in the big yard!

The Dog LOVES IT!
I bought this for my ex-wife's Pitbull. He is an aggressive chewer and usually destroys any toy I buy him. But not this one! The ball is small enough and pliable that it gives when he chomps on it. He loves this ball and seems to be his favorite toy. Thank you for making a product that he likes and can't destroy!

My Golden Retriever’s favorite
We’ve owned lots of toys and balls. This specific version (in blue) has been her absolute favorite. She’s about 72lbs and chews on this thing regularly with no visible damage. We actually own about 6 of them because they have a tendency to go missing underneath furniture and in the yard. We have two of the orange colored ones but she doesn’t like those nearly as much which I assume is because the blue is easier to see in the grass. Other than that…They bounce really well and also whistle a little when you throw them hard enough. I hope they never stop making these.
