Purple Crape Myrtle Tree (Lagerstroemia indica) is Phoenix's premier purple-flowering deciduous shade tree — combining spectacular lavender-purple summer blooms with a handsome multi-trunk tree form that shades your landscape all season long. Purple Crape Myrtle Tree Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Summer Color Anchor in Tree Form

In Phoenix's long, searing summers, few trees provide both meaningful shade and spectacular color like Purple Crape Myrtle Tree. Its lavender-purple blooms peak June through September — exactly when Phoenix landscapes need color the most. The tree-trained form elevates the canopy above eye level, creating a shaded room beneath the blooms. Plant one as a standalone specimen in a front yard bed in Mesa or Tempe and watch it become the most talked-about tree on the block.

Formal Driveway Lining

Purple Crape Myrtle Tree's upright, vase-shaped tree form makes it one of the most elegant driveway trees available for Phoenix Valley homes. Its rich purple blooms complement both warm and cool home exterior colors. Plant 15–20 feet apart for a symmetrical driveway approach. A 40-foot driveway needs 3 trees; a 60-foot span works beautifully with 4 trees spaced evenly. For a two-color driveway, alternate Purple Crape Myrtle Trees with White or Dynamite Red Crape Myrtle Trees.

Purple Color Theme Garden

Purple Crape Myrtle Tree is the cornerstone plant for purple-themed Phoenix gardens. Its lavender-purple blooms pair beautifully with Texas Sage (also purple), Purple Ruellia groundcover, Purple Fountain Grass, and Agapanthus. In Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, this color palette creates a sophisticated, water-wise landscape that looks beautiful from spring through fall. The exfoliating cinnamon-colored bark adds a refined texture contrast to the purple color theme.

Fast Privacy Screen & Shade

At 20–25 feet tall with a 15–20 foot spread, mature Purple Crape Myrtle Trees create effective visual screening between properties and from neighboring rooflines in Glendale, Surprise, and Peoria. Plant 12–15 feet apart for a naturalistic screen. A 60-foot property line works well with 4–5 trees. Being deciduous, the screen is fullest spring through fall; winter months will be more open but the attractive multi-trunk structure remains visually interesting.

Best Time to Plant Purple Crape Myrtle Tree in Phoenix

Fall (October–November) is ideal. Cooler air reduces transplant stress while warm soil promotes root development — giving the tree 6–8 months to establish before its first Phoenix summer. Spring (February–April) is the second-best window. If planting in summer, water every 1–2 days for the first 3–4 weeks and mulch generously to protect the root zone from extreme heat.

How to Plant Purple Crape Myrtle Tree

  1. Dig wide, not deep — excavate 2–3× the root ball width at the same depth as the root ball. Never plant deeper than the nursery soil line.
  2. Check for caliche — break through any caliche hardpan layer beneath the hole with a breaker bar to ensure proper drainage.
  3. Backfill with native soil — Crape Myrtles thrive in native Arizona soil; a 20% compost amendment is optional.
  4. Spacing — 15–20 ft apart for driveway or screen planting; 20+ ft from structures for full canopy development.
  5. Water basin — build a 3–4 inch soil berm ring around the planting hole to concentrate irrigation at the root zone.
  6. Mulch — apply 2–3 inches of bark or gravel mulch (kept away from the trunk) to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Watering Purple Crape Myrtle Tree in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

Weeks 1–2: Water every 1–2 days, deep and slow (20–30 minutes per session). Month 1–2: Every 3–4 days. Month 3–6: Every 7–10 days (every 5–7 days during peak summer heat above 110°F). After Year 1: Every 10–14 days in summer; every 3–4 weeks in winter. Established trees are highly drought-tolerant and typically need no supplemental water from November through March.

Drip Irrigation

Position 2–4 GPH drip emitters 18–24 inches from the trunk, at the outer edge of the root ball. Run long, infrequent cycles to encourage deep root development. Move emitters outward as the canopy expands. Mature trees need minimal supplemental water — typically 1–2 deep drip cycles per week in peak summer is sufficient.

How fast does Purple Crape Myrtle Tree grow in Phoenix?
With consistent deep irrigation in the first two years, Purple Crape Myrtle Trees gain 3–5 feet per year in Phoenix. A tree-form 25-gallon specimen can reach 15–18 feet within 3–4 years, delivering meaningful shade and full bloom coverage well ahead of slower-growing ornamental trees.

What's the difference between Purple Crape Myrtle Tree and Purple Crape Myrtle (shrub)?
Both are the same species (Lagerstroemia indica), but the "Tree" form refers to specimens trained into an upright single or multi-trunk tree structure with an elevated canopy. Tree forms grow taller (20–25 feet), provide more shade, and are better for driveway lining, shade trees, and formal landscape use. The shrub form is more compact and suited to smaller spaces.

Does Purple Crape Myrtle Tree bloom every year in Phoenix?
Yes — reliably every summer from June through September. In Phoenix's warm climate, blooms can begin as early as late May and extend into early October, providing up to 5 months of continuous purple color annually.

Is Purple Crape Myrtle Tree drought tolerant?
Yes. After the first growing season, Purple Crape Myrtle Tree is highly drought-tolerant. It requires supplemental irrigation primarily during Phoenix's peak summer months (June–September) and can often survive on natural rainfall alone from November through April.

Is it safe near pools?
Purple Crape Myrtle Tree is not recommended as a pool-surround tree due to flower, leaf, and seed pod drop. For pool-friendly flowering trees, consider Mexican Bird of Paradise or Hong Kong Orchid Tree instead.

How Many Purple Crape Myrtle Tree Do I Need?

This is a tree-trained specimen with a 15 to 20 foot canopy. Space it for the role you want: a formal driveway line, a naturalistic screen, or a single shade focal point.

Run length Driveway / formal line (18 ft on center) Screen (12 to 15 ft on center)
40 ft 3 trees 3 to 4 trees
60 ft 4 trees 4 to 5 trees
80 ft 5 trees 6 trees

As a standalone shade tree, one specimen set 20 ft from the house gives the canopy room to spread fully.

Purple Crape Myrtle Tree Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb to Apr): Leafs out on bare multi-trunk structure and begins the year's growth flush. A strong secondary planting window before summer heat arrives.
  • Summer (May to Sep): The signature season. Lavender-purple clusters cover the elevated canopy from June through September, blooming reliably past 110°F while casting real shade beneath. Monsoon humidity eases summer watering.
  • Fall (Oct to Nov): Prime planting season and a second display, with orange-red fall foliage before leaf drop. Cooling soil lets roots establish ahead of next summer.
  • Winter (Dec to Jan): Fully deciduous, revealing handsome cinnamon exfoliating bark and an open branch structure. Reliably cold-hardy for the Valley, to roughly 5°F, so frost is no concern. Late winter is the window for light corrective pruning, never topping.

Is Purple Crape Myrtle Tree Right for Your Yard?

It thrives in full sun and reflected heat, in well-draining soil opened through any caliche layer, with room for a 15 to 20 ft canopy. It is the right tree if you want an elevated shade canopy plus months of summer purple and a reliable Valley frost tolerance. It is not a fit poolside, where flower, leaf, and seed-pod drop is a constant cleanup, or where you need winter privacy, since it goes fully bare from December into spring.

My Favorite Mask
Scent: Collagen, Size: 4 Count (Pack of 1)
I’ve been really impressed with this Bio-Collagen hydrogel mask! It feels incredibly cooling and soothing on the skin, especially after a long day. The overnight wear is a huge plus—you wake up with your skin feeling noticeably more hydrated, plump, and smooth. It doesn’t feel heavy or sticky, and it stays in place better than most sheet masks. After a few uses, I’ve noticed my skin looks more refreshed and even, and my pores appear a bit more minimized. It’s a great option when your skin needs a little extra boost or before an event when you want that “glow.”

Woke Up Glowing ✨ (But Sleeping In It Is a Stretch lol)
Scent: Collagen, Size: 4 Count (Pack of 1)
I was honestly impressed with this mask! It feels super soft, cooling, and refreshing while wearing it. The jelly texture makes it feel really hydrating and luxe, like a mini spa night at home. My skin looked smooth, plump, and GLOWING the entire next day after I took it off. Like… noticeably radiant. I also have sensitive skin, so I was a little nervous trying it at first, but I didn’t have any irritation or reaction at all. My skin felt calm, hydrated, and refreshed afterward. One thing I actually liked was that the mask was easy to customize a little. I have a nose piercing, so I just tore a small piece near my nose so it would fit comfortably without irritating it. The material held up perfectly, so that was a nice bonus for anyone with piercings or who just needs a better fit in certain areas. My only complaint is the “sleep in it” part of the instructions. I personally don’t see how that’s possible 😅 The mask stays pretty moist and jelly-like the whole time, so it felt uncomfortable to lay down in and I kept feeling like it would slide around. I ended up just wearing it for a while before bed instead. Overall though, the results were worth it and I’d definitely use it again for the glow alone!

Absolutely amazing masks!!!
Scent: Collagen, Size: 4 Count (Pack of 1)
These masks are beyond amazing! I use one once a week and leave it on overnight after completing my p.m. skincare routine and wake up to smooth, plump, moisturized, and absolutely glowing!! I have extremely sensitive skin and eyes and these masks do not bother me at all. No burning in my eyes and no irritation of the skin. My deep wrinkles seem a lot less pronounced and some of my more fine lines almost disappear for 24 hours after using this mask. They are simple to use and adhere to the skin perfectly even after applying serums and moisturizers. Once the mask is completely absorbed and becomes clear it peels of the skin with ease. Based on the quality of these masks I am shocked by the low price, it is such a great value for your money. This Mask has become a staple in my skincare routine and I will continue to purchase these!!

instantly more hydrated + glowy skin
Scent: Collagen, Size: 4 Count (Pack of 1), Scent: Collagen, Size: 4 Count (Pack of 1)
I love this mask. It’s one of those products you can actually see a difference with right after using it. It really helps with: 1. Deep hydration – my skin feels plump and moisturized, not dry or tight 2. Smoother texture – it softens everything and makes my skin feel really smooth 3. Glow/brightness – gives that fresh, healthy glow without looking greasy How I use it: I apply it on clean skin (usually at night), leave it on as directed, and let it fully absorb before removing. I like using it when my skin feels dull or dry and want a quick reset. Overall, it’s super easy to use and makes my skin look more refreshed every time. Definitely a go-to for me.

Love ❤️ this product! 100% recommend!
Scent: Collagen, Size: 16 Count (Pack of 1)
My initial encounter with these was until TikTok but I ordered them from Amazon for myself and my daughter for convenience and Prime shipping. There were two choices I think the one is a four-pack and the one I got is a 16 pack. The 16 pack will last you 4 months if you're doing it once a week as instructed. I open the top and two sides when I'm doing it just to have accessibility and to be able to use the remnants liquid in the pack after I'm done applying the facial part I put the liquid in the pack on my neck and chest. They are a little slippery when you take them out. I watched a video on how to apply it and did the bottom part first and then the top part sometimes I have to snip the top part near the nose to get it to fit properly but you don't have to in general. There are three pieces that are left over the two eye pieces and the lip piece. You can put them below your eyes or above your eyes on your brows and then put the mask over them which is what I do. Or you can put them under your eyes and put the mask over them but I find it doesn't absorb all the way in that location due to the double thickness I guess. The lip one you can put over your lip or put it on vertically over your throat where the skin can get a little saggy. Once you have it on it's best to sit back and relax for 30 minutes or so at about a 45° angle so it doesn't slip off. After about 10 to 15 minutes it doesn't slip around as much and after 30 it's obviously started absorbing and tends to stay pretty well. I haven't noticed any staining on the pillows or anything like that from it and by morning actually by 4 hours later it's completely absorbed and all you have left on your faces the plastic that it was attached to. You just pull that off and throw it away. It's white when you put it on and it's clear when it absorbs. I definitely noticed an improvement in my skin quality and the collagen sinks in easily and less about a week. I am a redhead with delicate skin and I haven't had any reaction to this product at all I know that other masks have caused problems for friends but I've used this one for over a year now and I love it. My daughter and I both use it weekly and they're easy to take with you if you're traveling great way to pamper your skin after a day outside on the beach. The price is reasonable for what it is and what it does. I've gotten several compliments on my skin and I'm over 60 so that saying something for the results! All in all this is a very good product, it doesn't smell and doesn't seem to have any impurities like some others. My skin isn't irritated by it and looks great afterwards. If you're wondering if it washes off once it's soaked in you can wash your face all you want but you're just going to have beautiful glowing cheeks. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this or give it as a gift!
