Overview

A hardy crop grown globally, onions are a staple in vegetable gardening. They can be grown for their mature bulbs, or simply for their green tops. Rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, iron, and organosulfur compounds, onions have been linked to cancer prevention and lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.

Conditions

Onions are a hardy crop adapted to a wide range of growing conditions. Day length is important in variety selection of bulbing onions. Growers north of 38 degrees latitude should plant long day varieties as early as possible to achieve full size prior to maturity. Growers south of 38 degrees should plant short day or intermediate day varieties as these need less day length to reach full size. Green/bunching onions can be grown at any latitude. Onions grow best in fertile, well drained soils with a pH of 6–6.8.

Planting

Use our grow calendar tool to find specific dates for your region! Seeds germinate in 10-14 days.

Plant indoors in starter pots or trays ~7-9 weeks before the desired transplant date. Transition outside (harden) for 7-14 days before outdoor transplant. Space 3-5" apart for full-sized bulbs, or 1-2" for bunching types.

Care

Keep consistently watered and well weeded. Shallow roots require light, frequent irrigation when plants are young.

Pests and Disease

Botrytis Leaf Blight, Gray Mold, Downy Mildew, and Purple Blotch are fungal diseases of onions that can be challenging to control. Practice 3–4 year crop rotations for all onion family crops (onions, shallots, leeks, garlic) and thoroughly compost or turn under all crop debris. Cover with floating row cover in areas with high onion maggot or thrips pressure.

Harvest

Onions for use in the green stage are harvested as soon as they attain edible size.

Onions growing to full bulb stage will have their green tops drop down when onions are ready to be harvested. Harvest when tops are between 80–100% broken down. Store in a cool, dry place.

Not completely indestructible but definitely long-lasting with plastic bits everywhere
Color: 1PC-Beef-Red
It's destructible it just takes a long time and tons of tiny little plastic pieces everywhere and even in your dog's stomach would not recommend due to wear and tear on dog's teeth and the plastic chips off.

Great Product!!!
Color: 1PC-Beef-Red
This is the first toy my dog has not demolished. I need to buy more just like it just in case something happens to this one. It's worth every bit of the money I spent on it.

Yes, it will get destroyed. No, it isn't a waste of your money.
Style: Animal Sound, Size: Medium
Okay, I just wanted to say I've bought this item three times even tho my huge super chewer dogs inevitably destroy it, and here's why: It's NOT a chew toy! Pretty much *ANY* toy will not survive a strong chewer unless it is made from an indestructible material, and indestructible materials are often dangerous for doggy teeth. The noises this thing makes entices dogs to be extra violent on it. The trick is, you need to supervise them with the toy and if they move from chasing/bouncing it to "gnawing furiously" remove it and replace it with a safe treat toy to chew on (like a rawhide or antler, or a kong stuffed with frozen/difficult to remove treats) to satisfy their chewing needs on a safer item. This will extend the life of the toy. This way, the only damage it takes is from them mouthing/throwing it, which is what it is designed to withstand. This method is the only safe way to play with just about any play toy if you have SUPER chewers. There are many toys out there that will last longer, however, this one makes noise and that is super valuable to enrich your dogs' life. In essence, you're paying (insert current price of this item) to get several hours of SUPERVISED play time out of this toy over the course of several months. As far as noise makers go, this is only one of two toys I have found to hold up long enough to be worth the price. Go for it.

Such short fun!
Style: Animal Sound, Size: Medium, Style: Animal Sound, Size: Medium
So it lasted one evening. The concept is great and I expected this one to last much longer because of the tire cover. It stopped making noises about 3 hours after I opened it. Keep in mind they slept for 1 of those hours and went for a walk came back and played but ignored it because it stopped making noises. I've attached a photo. Keep in mind it arrived yesterday, gave it to the dogs at 6:30 pm. By 9:30 pm, it was done. I would expect this level of damage from a larger dog, but I have two mini Aussies. Only one of them would go near it. I also wouldn't care if the tire part got a little wear and tear but this is extremely short playtime. I also purchased the ball. It still works, so I may have gotten a defective one. Not sure. I'll return and try again. I posted a photo because the boy dog was totally into it. The plain ball that talks is a HUGE hit. It got lost but suddenly responded to their noises. It was so funny. I'll have to write a review for the plain ball.
