In habitat it grows in deep sand, relying more on coastal fog and dew than rainfall — a clue to its preference for fast-draining soil and moderate watering in cultivation.

In summer, mature plants produce slender, upright inflorescences with tubular orange to coral-red flowers, often several branches per stem. These contrast attractively with the glaucous foliage and tend to draw hummingbirds in mild climates. Growth slows in cold or wet conditions, but the plant is surprisingly tolerant of brief light frost, reportedly down to about 22 °F according to San Marcos Growers. Aloe arenicola is best suited for USDA zones 9b – 11.
