Mixed English Lavender Hedge Pack – Three Colours, One Hedge

Every pack is a balanced blend of blue, pink, and white English lavenders. We choose the exact names, not you, and the selection shifts a little with what's growing best at the nursery in any given season. You can expect to find Hidcote or Munstead for the deep purple-blue, Loddon Pink or Rosea for the pink, and Arctic Snow or Edelweiss for the white. Whatever the mix on the day, every plant is a hardy proven variety that should go on flowering for ten years or more.

Why a Mixed Hedge Reads Better than a Single Variety

A long block of one lavender variety reads, frankly, like a furniture catalogue. Three colours alternated give the line rhythm: the eye moves along it instead of glazing over. The flower spikes don't all rise at exactly the same height, the silvery-grey foliage holds the whole thing together visually in winter, and the bee traffic is more interesting because different bees prefer different colours. We grow a six-plant mixed run in front of the office and it's been the best lavender we've planted, despite having no business being so.

Planting Companions

For the front of the hedge, low Mediterranean herbs work beautifully: rosemary, thyme, and creeping savory all share lavender's love of poor, well-drained soil and full sun. Catmint (Nepeta) is the classic skirt for a lavender hedge if you want something softer at the base. Behind the hedge almost any rose works; the silvery foliage flatters everything from soft creams to deep crimsons. Stipa tenuissima, the long-haired feather grass, gives a contemporary alternative to catmint and reads well against the lavender's vertical flower spikes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lavenders come in the mixed hedge pack?

Each pack is a balanced blend of three classic colours: a deep purple-blue, a soft pink, and a clean white. We select which variety fills each slot from what's flowering and growing best at the nursery. Typically Hidcote or Munstead for the blue, Loddon Pink or Rosea for the pink, and Arctic Snow or Edelweiss for the white. You don't choose; we do.

How far apart should I plant lavender for a hedge?

Plant lavenders at three per metre, about 33cm apart in a single row. The six-plant pack gives you roughly two metres of hedge; the 36-plant pack gives you about twelve metres. Alternate the colours along the line so the same colour never sits next to itself.

Will all the lavenders in the pack flower together?

Most of them will, but not exactly. Munstead-type lavenders open about a fortnight earlier than Hidcote-types, so the hedge often starts with a wave of blue, then catches up over June and into July. Pink and white varieties tend to bloom alongside the Hidcote-types. The hedge looks at its fullest in mid-July when everything is in flower at once.

When is the best time to plant a lavender hedge in the UK?

Plant from late April onwards when the soil is warming. May is safer in the North. Lavender hates being planted into cold wet ground; it sulks for months and sometimes never recovers. There's no rush. Plants set out in May or even June will romp away and catch up with anything planted earlier.

Is a mixed lavender hedge good for bees?

Mixed lavender hedges are exceptional for bees and other pollinators. Lavandula angustifolia is on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list, and a six-metre run in three colours will be working from June until late August. Different bee species favour different flower forms, so the mix attracts a slightly wider range of visitors than a single-variety hedge would.

Great post bike ride
I have been using this Coola recovery mist for a few weeks off and on after bike rides if I can't get a shower immediately. It provides relief to my face and shoulders from the sun and drying sweat. If I use this after washing my face at the end of the day, it helps hydrate my skin just enough if I don't feel like using my heavier creams and moisturizers. Not saying one replaces the benefit of another, but if I'm looking for something lighter this relieves the tension of tight skin perfectly. I am planning on taking this for a week long camp out this summer and plan on taking this to help relieve my skin. Yes, it definitely smells a bit like chlorine but it goes away quickly. The only thing I really don't like is the pump sprayer is really not a mist, it's more targeted and instead of misting the product is little droplets it's a dense spray in a smaller area.

Versatile spray that works well for sensitive skin
Lately I've been hearing so much about hypochlorus acid and its multiple benefits and uses. Being that I really like Coola products, when I saw that Coola had made a hypochlorous acid face spray, I was eager to give it a try. I'm glad I did! As someone with sensitive skin that gets irritated from perspiration when I work out, I was hoping this spray might calm my post-workout skin...and it did. The mist comes in an attractive spray bottle. The spray that comes out is at the intensity of somewhere between a fine mist and a coarse spray; it sprays a good amount to wet your face rather than just a very fine coating. Upon spraying on my skin that was red and warm from my workout, I immediately felt a cooling effect. I wiped the spray in to my skin a bit, and it both cleared away the perspiration, and felt soothing to my post-workout irritation. It felt very different from other toners or astringents I'd used, and my face felt clean, refreshed and unexpectedly soft after use. I later tried the recovery mist on a small area of rash I developed on my neck. I had a similar experience in that it cooled the skin, and my rash appeared minimized, as well. My only issue with this product is the scent. The spray has a scent that smells like a faint version of chlorine bleach...which was disconcerting, since I'm spraying it on my face! I actually looked it up and apparently that's just the scent that hypochlorous acid has...so it's not specific to just Coola's product. Fortunately, the bleachy scent dissipated quickly. Overall, I'm happy with this product, and found it useful for my irritated skin. While I tried it for post workout skin and a rash, apparently it can be used for bites, scrapes and acne as well, so it seems to be very versatile. So if you can get over the initial bleachy scent, it's definitely worth giving a try. Priced at $20 for the 3.4 ounce bottle, which should last a while, I find it to offer a good value for the money, as well.
