Diospyros virginiana, the Common Persimmon, is the most undervalued native fruit tree in North America. When ripe, the small orange fruits have a rich, jammy sweetness that has been compared to dates and honey, intensified further after frost. Before they ripen, they are jaw-clenchingly astringent in a way that is impossible to forget. The tree that produces them is one of the toughest, most drought-tolerant, and most adaptable native trees available, growing on poor rocky soils, in abandoned fields, and along roadsides where nothing else bothers to try. And every deer, turkey, fox, raccoon, and opossum within range will know when your persimmons are ripe before you do. If you are looking to buy Persimmon seeds or grow native persimmon from seed, this is a tree that rewards patience with one of the most distinctive fruits in North American horticulture.

  • Native fruit tree with intensely sweet, honey-like flavor when fully ripe after frost
  • One of the most drought-tolerant and adaptable native fruit trees in eastern North America
  • Deer candy, the fruits are among the most sought-after wildlife food available on any property
  • Extremely long-lived with a deep taproot that makes established trees nearly impossible to kill
  • Dioecious, plant male and female trees for reliable fruit production

Things you probably did not know about the Common Persimmon

The Algonquian word for it became the English name.
The word persimmon comes from the Algonquian word putchamin or pessamin, meaning a dry fruit. The fruit was a significant food source for Indigenous peoples across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, eaten fresh, dried, and ground into a meal that was mixed with cornmeal and fat for cakes and bread.

The green fruit can pucker your mouth for hours.
Unripe persimmons contain soluble tannins that bind to saliva proteins and create an intensely dry, astringent sensation that no amount of water relieves. The experience is so striking that encountering an unripe persimmon is the kind of thing people remember for decades. Ripe fruit, by contrast, is among the sweetest of any native fruit.

A single tree can fruit for 75 years or more.
Common Persimmon trees are extremely long-lived and continue fruiting prolifically well into old age. Trees planted for wildlife management in the mid-20th century are still producing heavy crops today. Few fruit trees offer the same longevity without replanting.

It is nearly impossible to transplant once established.
The deep, brittle taproot of the Common Persimmon makes it one of the most difficult native trees to dig and move once it has established. Growing from seed and planting in the permanent location while small is far more successful than attempting to transplant a nursery-grown specimen.

Beautiful book!
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
This book perfectly exemplifies how soft and simple can be so magical. The lyrical language laden with sensory details, paired with the vibrant visuals, makes for an absolute treat of an experience! The father-child time at night immediately reminded me of OWL MOON and just like owling, urban horseback riding is something we’ve never experienced personally, so it was especially thrilling to experience it with my children through this book. I also love that this book is a celebration of Black culture and joy. Finding the universal through the specific is the key to any good story, and the author has a real knack for it. Just like the Abuelita in this story, my mother is the first to wake up, and we find her nestled in her chair with a cup of coffee. And the description of the little girl’s kiss on her Abuelita’s papery cheek brought back memories of my own grandmother’s papery cheek – something I miss very much. Picture books really are for everyone. All the starred reviews are so well-deserved and I’d be very surprised if this book didn’t win awards. Highly recommend!

Gorgeous, joyful, and moving
Format: Hardcover
This book is simply breathtaking, from the vibrant illustrations to the lovely father-daughter story about the precious alone time they spend together early in the morning. The effect is so powerful and visceral, it feels like you're right there experiencing it with them-- the quiet of the city at dawn, the nostalgia, the sharing of a memory that will last a lifetime. It made me long for my own cherished childhood moments. My kid was fascinated by the idea of horses on city streets, which I guess he's never seen before. And, for my part, I loved the all too rare representation of Black cowboy culture in a picture book. More books like this, please! Final moments of the book highlight the main character's belief in herself... "I'm a cowboy too!" This confidence is partly a result of the love and representation provided by her father. LOVE LOVE this book.

Hands Down Best on the Market
Scent: Sandalwood, Size: 2 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I have tried pretty much EVERY beard balm known to man at this point and while some have been okay, what makes this the hands down full on winner for me is not just it's effectiveness but it's scent. A sandalwood product that actually smells like REAL sandalwood and not some sweet, vanilla, gross whatever imitation pretty much every other "sandalwood" scented product out there these days smell like. I am so in love with the scent that I wish this were available as a cologne. As far as it's actual effectiveness, that is also five stars. It's effective without too much shine so it doesn't look too greasy. This is one of the only balms I have found that does NOT break me out. I use it for both my beard and my hair. It's an exceptional pomade! It isn't too greasy, it's got good hold. I'm not sure about conditioning quality yet, but it's been single digits temperature here and normally my beard feels very dry and kind of painful, I don't really know how else to describe it, and I haven't been having that problem since starting this product. Another bonus, it's a great barrier against wind/cold burn. I hope they don't stop selling this product because I for one know I would be a customer for life.
