Description:
Tropical drama meets elegance. Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’, also known as Variegated Shell Ginger, bursts with bold gold-striped foliage and arching stems that sway with movement. In warm weather, mature plants may produce delicate shell-like flowers that smell faintly of ginger and citrus.
It’s a lush, architectural choice for patios, courtyards, or warm conservatories - especially when paired with other big-leafed stunners. Give it space, and it’ll steal the show.
Plant Care
Position: Full sun to part shade in a sheltered, warm spot. Prefers rich, free-draining soil - ideal in large containers.
Hardiness: Tender perennial – tolerates temperatures down to around 5°C. Protect from frost or bring indoors over winter.
Hot Tips: Feed monthly during spring and summer to boost leaf colour and growth. Prune spent stems to encourage fresh shoots. In cooler regions, treat it like a seasonal centrepiece or overwinter it indoors. Looks incredible in a glazed pot.
