Monstera sierrana is a distinct Monstera species that has gained attention for its large, dramatic leaves, deep fenestrations and strong climbing habit. Often confused with Monstera deliciosa in the past, it is now recognised as a separate species with its own growth traits and leaf structure. When mature, it becomes an impressive architectural plant, ideal for growers who enjoy big, bold foliage and vertical growth.

Plant Description

Monstera sierrana produces large, thick leaves that are typically broader and more elongated than juvenile Monsteras. As the plant matures, the leaves develop deep, well-defined fenestrations, often extending closer to the leaf margins than in younger forms. The foliage is a rich mid to deep green with a slightly leathery texture and a subtle sheen.

Growth follows a strong climbing pattern. The plant produces thick stems and aerial roots that actively seek support. When given a moss pole or plank, Monstera sierrana will climb readily, producing progressively larger and more dramatic leaves as it ascends. Without support, growth becomes sprawling and leaf development is less impressive.

This species is grown for foliage rather than flowers; indoor flowering is rare and not a focus.

Light Requirements

Bright, indirect light is essential for healthy growth and proper leaf development. A position near an east-facing window or a bright spot set back from a south- or west-facing window works well.

Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the leaves, especially younger growth. In lower light conditions, the plant will survive but grow more slowly, with smaller leaves and reduced fenestration.

Watering

Monstera sierrana prefers even moisture with good drainage. Allow the top few centimetres of the growing medium to dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess moisture drain away.

During spring and summer, watering will be more frequent as the plant actively grows. In autumn and winter, reduce watering and allow the compost to dry slightly more between waterings. Overwatering, particularly in cooler months, can lead to root rot, while prolonged dryness may cause drooping or slowed growth.

Temperature & Humidity

This Monstera thrives in warm, stable indoor temperatures, ideally between 18–28°C. It should be protected from cold draughts, unheated rooms and sudden temperature changes. Temperatures below 15°C can slow growth and cause stress.

Moderate to high humidity encourages larger leaves, stronger growth and better fenestration. While Monstera sierrana adapts well to average household humidity, it performs best when humidity remains above 50–60%. Increased humidity should always be paired with good airflow.

Soil & Potting

A free-draining, moisture-retentive aroid mix is ideal. The roots need oxygen as well as consistent moisture. A mix of peat-free compost or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and orchid bark works very well.

Choose a pot with good drainage and avoid oversizing. Repot only when the plant becomes root-bound, ideally during the growing season. Providing a sturdy moss pole or climbing support early helps establish a strong, upright growth habit.

Feeding

Feed lightly but regularly during the growing season. From spring through late summer, apply a balanced houseplant fertiliser every four to six weeks at half strength. Overfeeding can result in soft growth and reduced leaf quality.

Do not feed during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Pruning & Training

Pruning is mainly used to control size or remove damaged growth. Trim stems just above a node during the growing season if shaping is required.

Training the plant up a moss pole, coir pole or wooden plank is strongly recommended. Securing aerial roots into the support helps the plant climb and encourages larger, more mature foliage.

Common Issues & Sensitivities

Small or unfenestrated leaves usually indicate insufficient light or lack of support. Yellowing leaves often point to overwatering, while drooping leaves can signal underwatering. Overall, Monstera sierrana is robust and forgiving once established.

Pests such as spider mites or thrips can occasionally appear, particularly in dry conditions, so regular inspection is advised.

Propagation

Propagation is straightforward via stem cuttings with at least one node and aerial root. Cuttings can be rooted in water, sphagnum moss or a well-draining propagation mix. Warmth, humidity and bright indirect light encourage successful rooting within a few weeks.

Overall Care Summary

Monstera sierrana is a bold, fast-developing climbing Monstera that rewards bright indirect light, climbing support and consistent care. It is easier to manage than many rare aroids but still delivers impressive, mature foliage when grown correctly. Given space and support, it becomes a striking vertical feature and a true statement plant in any indoor collection.

Epic!!!!
Format: Kindle
Absolutely addicted from the first page. The twists and turns, world building and character development all come together for the perfect Omegaverse. And let's not forget that spice because knots are life and these are spectacular. Running for book #2 because that cliffhanger was torturous.

A good read
Format: Kindle
A good read, just fluffy cuteness, no antagonism. I like all the characters. It could have used another round of editing however, glanfds being one error that cracked me up, and my personal pet peeve was that the author kept using the word fill instead of feel, which I promise you are not interchangeable haha, but it's definitely better than the majority of books I read on here mistake-wise.

amazing
Format: Kindle
Knot the Bride was a fantastic read! The characters were all amazing and well-developed. It was easy to like them all. Sophia, Luca, Nick, and Gavin were all perfect for each other. It was such a charming story that had me hooked the entire time. I did wish there were POVs from Luca, Nick, and Gavin but it was still an amazing book without it. I am excited to read the next book in the Willowside Omegaverse series! This is definitely a must-read for fans of omegaverse romance!. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

3 Star Read,
Format: Kindle
This book wasn't bad, but wasn't my cup of tea. It's highly disappointing because the storyline is so original. There is no real conflict or resolution, so the entire thing feels flat. As a lover of omegaverse books, I know there is a ton of variety out there, and ov is really up to the author. But this one is weird. Omegas have multiple scent glands all over their bodies and go into week long heats every month. Alphas have knots in the middle of their shaft instead of the base, and the knot doesn't always swell, no explanation of when or why. It doesn't engage at all when the mouth is in play. I also didn't enjoy the author's writing style. Each paragraph is only 1 or 2 sentences long, and the entire book reads very stacato. The conversations are stiff and unnatural feeling. Everything is very repetitive, both in word choice and in thought. The same thing is repeated 3 or 4 times over a single page, multiple times over. I ended up doing so much skimming. The first 50% of the book is all slow burn, and the last 50% is almost straight mediocre spice. This wouldn't have been all bad if the grammar and spelling errors didn't start at the exact same time. Tongue is repeatedly misspelled in the middle of the spice.

Cozy Omegaverse
Format: Kindle
This is the true definition of Cozy Omegaverse. LA wedding coordinator meets her pack at the location for a couple’s destination wedding. Low angst because they are scent matched high heat with heats and knots. Everything you love about this genre with very little anxiety. Simply a fun experience to read and a book I will comeback to when I’m in a slump. I simply love reading this book
