Spearmint Herb is the common variety of mint that is very versatile and makes great mint sauce as well as fresh with new potatoes or peas or in your summer Pimms. Spearmint/Garden Mint has attractive, fragrant dark green serrated leaves and produces little mauve flowers.

Mint grows to 60cm and has an infinite spread - it is an invasive plant. To stop it spreading out of control it is best to plant it in a container and then plant the container into the soil. This will help contain its spread, re-pot when necessary. It is best to remove the flowers as soon as they appear as they will reduce leaf production.

It can be kept easily in a pot. It is a hardy herbaceous perennial that dies back each autumn and regrows the following spring, some mulch in autumn will help it through winter. It is a good companion plant as it repels many insects by its strong aroma so plant near brassicas.

Don't plant two different types of mint near each other as they will cross and both their flavours will become inferior.

Spearmint Herb Seed Information

Seed Quantity: Approx 750 seeds per pack.
Site:
Moist soil but well drained soil in sun or partial shade.
When to Sow
February to June or August to September.
How to Sow:
Sow seed in seed compost, but do not cover seed. Ensure the compost is moist, but not wet and cover. Keep at 18-20C. Germination is erratic and may take 1-2 weeks or a few weeks. Transplant seedlings in to a small pot when large enough to handle and plant out 30cm apart when risk of frost has passed.
Care:
Regular picking will ensure a healthy crop and encourage new fresh shoots to grow. To prevent mint from becoming straggly or woody cut back after flowering.
Harvest: Once established it can be picked for 5-6 months a year and keeps well dried for the winter months.

Not for aggressive chewers
My dogs enjoy them, but the terrier had holes in the head in minutes. Stuffing and squeaker didn’t last, but they enjoy the legs and crinkles.

Nothing is Chew Proof, but these do pretty well
My three 2-year-old Dutch Shepherds have killed every toy except their Kong balls. These octopus toys are hanging in there. My dogs are particularly driven by wiggling the appendages - They LOVE it. My Sheba who normally kills toys immediately has not yet destroyed her octopus. She's been holding it like a teddy bear, that is after she's worn out from throwing it around. I've thrown them in the washing machine and they come out great.

My pup really loves this toy!
I think they are adorable. and my pup loves them! We have a golden puppy and she loves to chew and play with her toys. This is one of her favorite toys. She enjoys tugging at the legs and making the squeaker squeck! I love my puppy and she loves this and I highly recommend these!

Not good for aggressive chewers
This product does not stand up to aggressive chewing. My bulldog had it for about an hour before the legs disappeared.
