Product Information

Reed Canary Grass spreads by underground stems (rhizomes) and forms a solid sod. It can be harvested as pasture, silage, or hay, whether sown in pure stands or in mixture with legumes.

New low-alkaloid varieties of Reed Canary Grass offer potential for improved animal performance and expanded use. Reed Canary Grass is better-adapted to diverse uses and environmental conditions than most other commonly used perennial grasses.

Reed Canary Grass has unjustly gained a reputation as a low-quality forage grass. This misconception is in part due to the potentially high-alkaloid content of native ecotypes, and to the frequent practice of delayed mid-Summer harvest of very mature Reed Canary Grass from wetlands that were flooded during the Spring. But modern Reed Canary Grass forage yields and quality are equal to or greater than those of other cool-season forage Grasses when harvested at a similar stage of maturity.

Reed Canary Grass has superior persistence on poorly drained soils, yet its yield and persistence under moisture deficits is equal or superior to other commonly grown cool-season grasses. Reed Canary Grass is very winter-hardy.

Of the perennial grasses adapted to Minnesota, Reed Canary Grass is among the most persistent. It maintains yield under cutting strategies designed to produce both low and high-quality forage.

While Tall Fescue and Orchardgrass do not persist under infrequent cutting and smooth Bromegrass and Timothy do not persist well under frequent cutting (initial cutting before anthesis), Reed Canary Grass persists when cut at a diversity of growth stages. It is, therefore, very adaptable to use as harvested forage or as pasture.

Grasses are mixed with legumes to minimize bloat potential, soil erosion, legume heaving and weed invasion inherent in legume monocultures, and to increase hay-drying rates. Recommended Grass composition varies from 20% to 50%, depending on use of the forage. For animals with high-nutrient intake requirements, reduced grass composition is desired. If grass composition exceeds 50%, forage intake potential can be greatly reduced.

Because it has a sod-forming habit, Reed Canary Grass can fill in gaps in the stand, and it will never forms clumps in the field, like those found with Orchardgrass. Reed Canary Grass is adapted to mixtures with legumes such as Birdsfoot Trefoil and Alsike Clover, which also tolerate wet soils. On upland sites in southern Minnesota under cutting and grazing, it is more capable than other grasses of preventing weed invasion of mixtures with Birdsfoot Trefoil, without excessively competing with the legume.

Reed Canary Grass has a superior capacity to persist and remove nitrogen when irrigated with municipal and industrial waste effluents.

Reed Canary Grass tolerates a soil pH range of 4.9 to 8.2. Mature plants have been known to tolerate five to eight weeks of spring flooding. However, like most cool-season grasses, it has only moderate tolerance to saline soils.

Reed Canary Grass may require two weeks to germinate and emerge, and its seedlings are not highly competitive. Therefore, careful attention needs to be given to establishment practices.

Early Spring (mid-April to early June) or late Summer (mid-July to mid-August) are the best times to seed. Spring seedings provide best chances for adequate moisture for germination. Summer seedings have less weed competition, but may not be successful in areas with inadequate summer moisture.

Plant at a rate of 8 to 10 lbs. per acre.

Perfect earring tree
Color: Bronze
I was so tired of fumbling through a handful of tangled earrings in my jewelery box every morning - went looking for something to organize them and found this lovely tree. Since I am a admirer of all things bird, the design appealed to me. I was a bit worried it might be too garish, but was pleasantly surprised. The burnished copper-like finish is quite nice, and the embossed designs on the trunk and leaves give it a three-dimensional look. The nest is sturdy and holds my rings and bracelets, and I could hang necklaces from the branches (but I have another place for those.) I was worried it would be too large for my counter top - it is 17" tall x 15" wide - but it works well as a decorative piece. The sturdy base (7"x3") provides stability. Lots of holes for earrings and works just as well for dangles as for posts. All in all I am very pleased with this purchase. It came in a sturdy box and only one leaf was slightly crimped, which was easy to gently bend back into shape. And best of all - no more tangled mess of wires and hoops to sort out each morning!

Great earring tree!I
Color: Silver, Color: Silver
I like this earring tree more than I’d expected to! It holds a lot of earrings, is very sturdy and stable, and cute. It also has a little nest basket where you can put items like bracelets and rings. I love that I can see my earring options, and find the ones that best go with my outfit when getting ready for work in the morning. I’m glad it’s metal, almost a work of art, vs cheap plastic. It’s a pleasure to look at, not just functionally useful.

Exactly what I wanted!
It is really exactly what I was looking for. I've been living with my jewelry in ziplock bags since we moved over here and everything fits perfect. I saw some reviews that claimed it was unstable but I tested it and it seems sturdy though I'm not hanging heavy pieces. It is a nice size and I love the little ring basket. It also feels pretty decent quality too. Glad I got the black one as I'm not sure where I have it that the copper/bronze would look right. I think it is elegant, practical and I wish I could post a photo with my pieces on it to show that it really holds things beautifully.

Looks great by my bed!
Even my boyfriend keeps commenting how much he likes it. It's a usable piece of art! I will comment that the earring holes can be a little tricky since the leaves are turned all different ways. You have to be strategic with how you line up your long/dangle-y earrings with your studs so everybody fits and can be seen. A little tricky. But not a deal breaker - especially when it's so easy on the eye. The other slight negative is that this really isn't the best necklace holder. I would have thought, "No problem!" But it's a bit awkward. Especially if you actually intend to see all your earrings. You'll end up hanging most of your necklaces from the top most branch - but they slide down into the crevice to stay. Then you've got a lot of overlapping. And trickiness to retrieve the exact necklace you want with ease. However, this is still a fabulous earring tree. I can't say enough good things about it. Love the little basket for miscellaneous. Hair bands, lip gloss, etc.

Beautiful jewelry display
Color: Bronze-Tone
A few rough edges, but all in all well made and attractive. Holds lots of earrings and I can drape my necklaces on the tree. There's a nice bowl for bracelets and a nice tray that forms the base.
