Introducing the variegated tiger jaws, known as Faucaria tigrina variegata, which is a captivating species of the Faucaria tigrine, opens in a new tab. Its adorable, jaw-like leaves make it easy to see why it gets its name! Faucaria tigrine variegata may appear frightening and spiky, but it is a succulent rather than a cactus, so it lacks spines.
Native to South Africa, it is characterized by its distinctive variegated foliage, which displays a striking combination of green and creamy white colors, adding an eye-catching appeal to any collection of succulents.
The variegated tiger jaws feature small, triangular-shaped leaves with tooth-like protrusions along the edges, giving it a fierce and exotic appearance.
Its teeth-like appendages are soft and completely harmless.
The variegated tiger jaws can grow up to 6 inches tall and 6 inches wide, forming attractive clumps of variegated foliage.
When in bloom, the variegated tiger jaws produce dainty yellow flowers that emerge from the center of the plant, adding a delicate touch to its overall aesthetic.
These flowers typically bloom in the spring and summer months, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies to the garden. The bright yellow color of the flower’s contrasts beautifully with the plant’s green and white variegated leaves.
When it comes to care, this succulent thrives in plenty of sunlight, well-draining soil, opens in a new tab, and infrequent watering to prevent root rot. The variegated tiger jaws are well-suited to dry, sunny environments, making them ideal choices for xeriscape gardens or indoor succulent displays.
For this reason, Faunaria tigrina is well adapted to survive extended periods without water. Due to their extreme climate adaptation, these variegated tiger jaws are frequently sold as "unkillable" plants. During the growing season in the spring, diluted succulent fertilizer can be applied to support healthy growth and vibrant variegation.
The Variegated tiger jaws prefer indoor temperatures between 65-75°F and can tolerate outdoor USDA zones 9-11. They should be protected from frost and extreme heat when grown outdoors.
The variegated tiger jaws can be propagated through division or leaf cuttings. Dividing the plant's offsets or carefully taking leaf cuttings and allowing them to callus before planting in a suitable potting mix can help create new plants.
Overall, with the striking appearance and relatively low-maintenance care requirements, the variegated tiger jaws make a charming addition to any succulent collection, bringing a touch of exotic beauty to your space. Be sure to add Faucaria tigrina variegata to your collection today and elevate the beauty of your home or garden with this stunning-looking plant.
