Calathea & Maranta Potting Mix – fine-root substrate for prayer plants
Calathea & Maranta Potting Mix is made for plants where fine roots, leaf water balance and consistent moisture all matter. It’s designed for steady moisture and a soft, airy texture that doesn’t turn heavy or compact.
At a glance
- Fine-root contact: supports thin roots in small and medium pots
- Even moisture: buffers dry swings and keeps moisture more even without feeling heavy
- Light structure: prevents a dense, airless mass
- Prayer plant fit: suits Calathea, Goeppertia, Maranta, Ctenanthe and Stromanthe
More information
The substrate should feel soft and slightly springy, not gritty and loose like cactus soil. Perlite or similar light structure helps prevent the fine fraction from collapsing around roots.
Size selection
Prayer plants react badly to both drying hard and staying wet without oxygen. Choose a pot close to the root ball and adjust watering to current growth and room conditions.
How to get started
This mix is built around structure first. Use it as a complete potting mix, or blend it into a base soil to adjust airflow and drying speed.
Watering should match the pot size and root mass. Check moisture at depth and adjust your routine after the first few cycles.
Extra details
- Moisten dry components before potting so the mix settles evenly.
- Choose pot size for the root ball, not for the top growth.
- Top-dress with the same mix to reduce surface compaction.
