Juvenile plants grow horizontally as low, prostrate herbs with heart-shaped, waxy leaves that overlap like shingles. When the plant encounters a tree trunk, it climbs vertically using anchoring roots, eventually developing adult leaves similar to Monstera deliciosa, demonstrating leaf dimorphism .
