Citronella Scented Geranium (Pelargonium citrosum)

Citronella Scented Geranium is a warm-season staple for patios and entryways, grown for its fresh, citrus-scented foliage that makes containers feel lively and inviting. The soft, cut leaves add texture that pairs easily with bold flowers and tropical looks, and the plant stays full with simple care. It handles summer heat well when given sun and good drainage, making it a dependable filler and accent. If you want a fragrant, easy plant that looks good all season in pots, this one fits right in.

Distinctive Features

This tender, shrubby pelargonium forms a bushy mound of crinkled, deeply cut green leaves with a strong citrus fragrance when brushed or lightly crushed. Small flower clusters appear in warm weather, usually in soft pink to lavender tones, but the foliage is the main feature and stays attractive for a long season. The habit is upright and well-branched, making it easy to shape with light pinching. Mature size is typically about 18 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade, with some afternoon shade helpful in hotter climates.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil or a quality container mix, and avoid heavy, consistently wet sites.
  • Water: Medium, water to establish, then let the top inch of soil dry slightly between waterings.
  • Zones: USDA Zones 9 to 11, commonly grown as an annual elsewhere.
  • Notable Traits: Fragrant foliage and good heat tolerance when drainage is sharp.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a large patio container where the fragrant foliage can be enjoyed up close and anchor the planting.
  • Containers: Plant as a filler that keeps pots looking full while adding fresh scent near doors and seating areas.
  • Herb and Scent Gardens: Tuck into sunny beds where brushing the foliage releases its citrus aroma.
  • Seasonal Accents: Use in warm-season displays to add texture and green volume that supports brighter blooms.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pinching: Pinch growing tips occasionally to encourage branching and a denser, rounder plant.
  • Watering: Avoid overwatering, since soggy soil can weaken roots and reduce vigor.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth, especially in containers, to keep foliage full and healthy.
  • Overwintering: Bring indoors before frost to a bright window and water sparingly to keep it through winter.

Why Choose Citronella Scented Geranium?

  • Fragrant Foliage: Citrus-scented leaves add a sensory layer that makes patios and entryways feel more inviting.
  • Easy Container Performance: Bushy habit typically reaches 18 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide for a full, finished look.
  • Heat Friendly: Handles summer warmth well with sun, drainage, and steady but not heavy watering.
  • Design Versatility: Works as a filler, a green anchor, or a fragrant accent in mixed seasonal plantings.

Citronella Scented Geranium looks best when used generously, letting the foliage form a clean, textured base that supports brighter flowers. Pair it with bold color or deep foliage tones to make the fresh green read even stronger. Keep drainage sharp and water with a light hand once established, and it will stay dense and attractive through the season. If you want a fragrant, dependable container plant with an easy, garden-ready habit, this one delivers.

Won't go through "hurricane" or chain-link fencing - dogs LOVE it.
Color: Orange, Size: Large
We've been using this size (large) for about 2 years now. Between our Doberman pinscher and the boxer-pitbull mix, they are tough on toys. These dogs have access to the Chuckit Ultra balls only under supervision and they run like crazy in the backyard while either fetching or holding onto the balls. It keeps our doberman out of trouble because she's running with a ball in her mouth and therefor cannot nip at the other dog when she gets overly excited. Tennis balls are lucky to last one play session with these guys, just for comparison purposes. When throwing the regular size, the ball occasionally went right through our backyard (chain link aka "hurricane") fence -- even though they shouldn't quite fit. The size large balls bounce off the fence; our only problem now is when one of the dogs does a soccer style head-butt and knocks the ball over the fence that way. After 2 years, one ball has a split down the side and two are discolored because they were left outside when we couldn't locate them after a play session. Overall I like these very much and appreciate how well they've held up.

My dog and I love this!
Color: Orange, Size: Large
The balls are larger and fit the Chuck It with the larger ball size perfectly. The balls are hard rubber material and have stood up to continued chewing after our dog picks them up. They bounce and are really hard wearing. Great product for the price!

Durable but don't give this to them as an everyday chew toy.
Color: Orange, Size: Large
My Catahoula loves these things. Great for a training aid and to let them get their zoomies out but not durable enough for an idle chew toy.

Great for dogs that love cat toys
Size: Small - 2 Count (Pack of 1)
I have a 45# dog who loves to play with cat toys. She's a strange one, but it's what she likes. She also loves ChuckIt balls (glow in the dark, squeaker, rubber, etc.). We bought 2 2-packs and we're glad we did. These are about the side of ping pong balls or golf balls. Yes, if your dog's an aggressive chewer or smaller than a teacup these will probably not last long. Yes, my weirdo dog almost immediately picked all the "fuzz" off the ball because that's what she does. The quality and durability of the ball haven't been affected, it's just a bald little ball. Highly recommend for any non-aggressive chewers that LOVE cat-sized toys.
