Heliconia rostrata - Lobster Claw
Heliconia rostrata, commonly known as Lobster Claw Heliconia, is a breathtaking tropical perennial celebrated for its unique, pendulous bracts in vibrant shades of red and yellow with green tips. These long, cascading bracts resemble lobster claws, adding an exotic and dramatic look to garden landscapes from late spring through autumn. Growing to a height of 1.5–2.5 meters, Heliconia rostrata is perfect for adding colour, height, and a lush tropical vibe to shaded borders, garden beds, or as a stunning focal point in large containers.
Position
Lobster Claw Heliconia thrives in partial shade to full sun, with its best colour displayed in bright, filtered light. It prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil with high organic content and performs best in warm, humid climates. Sensitive to frost, Heliconia rostrata is ideal for tropical and subtropical gardens or protected areas in mild climates.
Growth
This fast-growing, clumping perennial reaches a mature height of 1.5–2.5 meters with a spread of about 1 meter, forming dense, upright clumps of lush green foliage. Its spectacular, cascading bracts and bold structure make it an excellent choice for adding height, texture, and vibrant colour to garden beds and borders.
Planting Guide
Heliconia rostrata grows best in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Plant in spring, spacing plants about 1 meter apart to allow for natural spreading. For container planting, use a high-quality potting mix that retains moisture but provides good drainage, and position the container in a semi-shaded location. Water thoroughly after planting, and apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
Plant Care
Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially in warm or dry weather, as Heliconia rostrata thrives in a humid environment. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser during the growing season to promote lush foliage and bract production. In cooler climates, bring container-grown plants indoors or to a protected area during winter. Prune any faded bracts and damaged leaves to keep the plant looking fresh and tidy.
