Description:
The Cimarron is a very beautifully colored romaine lettuce! This tasty lettuce has bright green-red leaves that fade to deep red tips. This romaine type lettuce has good disease and bolt resistance. Cimarron is a favorite among gardeners for its beautiful hue and crispy texture in salad mixes!

Growing Instructions (USDA Zones 3-9):
Lettuce is hardy and can be planted as early as the soil can be worked. It is a cool weather crop and grows best at temperatures of 60-65°F. Careful variety selection is important for hot weather plantings. Sow every 3 weeks for a continuous supply of fresh lettuce. Lettuce seed can enter thermal dormancy when exposed to high temperatures. Do not use a heat mat when germinating lettuce seed. Optimum germination results at soil temperatures of 60–65°F.

For direct seeding, seeds germinate at low soil temperatures (40°F), but poorly above 75°F. Sow seeds 2-3″ apart, rows 12–18″ apart. Cover seed lightly, about 1/8″, and firm soil gently. Thin to one plant every 10–12″. Dry soil must be watered to ensure coolness and moisture, and for uniform germination.

For transplanting, sow 2-3 seeds per cell, 1/4″ deep, 3-4 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Do not let soil above 70F while germinating so keep out of the sun and a cool, dark location. Harden seedlings by reducing water and temperature for 2–3 days before planting outdoors. Properly hardened transplants can survive temperatures as low as 20°F. Transplant to 10–12″ apart, in rows 18″ apart.

Watering: Water lettuce once to twice per week or every 4 days whenever rainfall is inadequate.

I wrote Jude for my twelve-year-old self, who never saw a brown girl in a book who was proud of her family and where she came from. A brown girl with hopes and dreams of her own.” The voice Jasmine found for her main character, Jude, is astonishingly authentic, wonderfully observant, and filled with love and hope and strength. Jude’s voice combined with the free verse blew me away for its lack of pretension, naturalness, and profound beauty. I was worried that the free verse would feel forced, especially coming out of a twelve year old’s mouth, but instead it’s surprisingly organic and easy to read. ⁣ ⁣ This is a Syrian refugee story that reveals what should be obvious: that refugees want what everyone wants: to be happy, to be safe, and to be themselves. ⁣ ⁣Jude’s story is told with humor and heart and understanding and joy. It’s possibly my favorite book I’ve read so far this year.

This book is amazing. I purchased for a reading competition but quickly fell in love. Highly recommend for a middle school level student. Written in verse but easy to read.

This gorgeous MG novel in verse is a MUST READ!
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
Words cannot adequately express how much Jordanian-American author Jasmine Warga’s novel “Other Words for Home” means to me. Growing up, I never read stories about people like me or families like my own because they simply didn’t exist. Books with Arab and/or Arab-American characters, being wholly human, navigating issues of identity and belonging, interrogating what “home” means were never written. Too bad. I’m elated that that’s changing, though, and that there are Arab-Americans who are writing these stories *with such immense skill and heart.* This is the first middle grade novel I’ve read in literally decades and it just encouraged me to order many more. It is poetic and hopeful and so thoughtfully written. I can barely remember the last time I loved a character as much as I love brave and precious Jude. I cried and cheered many times along this journey. Seriously, if you work with middle graders, have middle graders, or are a lover of children’s literature yourself—YOU MUST check out this gorgeous novel in verse. The only downside (and it's a big one) is that it ends.

One of the best books I have read this year!
Format: Hardcover
This is a beautiful novel-in-verse that will stay with me for a very long time. It is a must read for anyone middle grade or older. What I loved: - The Poetry- intriguing similes and metaphors, emotions captured on the page, powerful language - The Perspective- I appreciated that the protagonist was not from Aleppo, but from a vacation town on the sea in Syria. This shows a different perspective than I have seen, but one that is equally as important. Jude and her mother then come to stay with her uncle in America, and again, the perspective was different than other "refugee" stories but equally powerful. - The People- Jude is protagonist to cheer for, however, there are so many dynamic, diverse characters in this story. #LitReviewCrew
