Introducing the ponytail palm, known as Beaucarnea recurvata. Native to Southern Brazil, the ponytail palm is also known as the "elephant's foot palm or elephant foot tree" because of its enlarged lower trunk, which resembles an elephant's foot.

Within the agave family, the ponytail palm is a distinct plant that, despite its name, is not a true palm. Its cascading, strap-like leaves resemble a ponytail, adding to its unique and elegant appearance. This misconception often arises because its bulbous trunk and graceful foliage evoke the look of a palm tree. Ponytail palms are actually succulents, despite popular belief. Whether it's a succulent or a true palm itself, it adds a touch of tropical flair and botanical fascination to every area of your home.

This stunning ponytail palm succulent boasts unique features, such as long, slender leaves that cascade gracefully from its bulbous trunk.

Ponytail palms grown in gardens as landscape plants typically grow no taller than 11 feet, while indoors, they rarely exceed 4 feet in height.

The Ponytail Palm is a popular houseplant with a distinctive appearance and a thick, bloated brown stem that stores water at its thick, swollen stem and trunk base, often called a bulb or caudex.

The flowers of the ponytail palm rarely bloom when grown as a houseplant. When it blooms in late winter to early spring, it has small, nocturnal, pure white flowers that appear on long stalks that emerge from the center of your ponytail palm succulent.

The ponytail palm is a slow-growing plant with an impressive lifespan, reportedly living up to 150–200 years. Its longevity and ease of care make it a popular choice for indoor plants, offering beauty and companionship that can last for generations.

The ponytail palm Beaucarnea recurvata, is more closely related to desert plants in the Agave and Yucca genera.

When and How to Water Your Ponytail Palm

Like succulents, the ponytail palm is drought-tolerant with its fleshy, water-storing stems that can hold a lot of water.  However, their root structure is easily susceptible to overwatering, so make sure that you don't overwater, as it can lead to root rot and fungal infections.

In the spring and summer, during the growing season, the ponytail palm prefers regular watering. You'll want to keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Allow the top few inches of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

In fall and winter, during the dormant period, to reduce the frequency of watering. The Beaucarnea recurvata growth slows down, so it won't require as much water. In spite of the right watering frequency of about 2–3 weeks, ponytail palm Beaucarnea recurvata roots can be damaged if the soil is not fast-draining.

If you need to pot up a new ponytail palm, choose a container with enough drainage holes. Allow the soil to dry out more between waterings, but don't let it completely dry out. Aim for a balance where the soil is slightly moist but not overly wet.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Ponytail Palm

When growing Ponytail palm indoors, it thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate lower light levels. Placing it near a sunny window or in a well-lit room is ideal. However, be cautious of exposing your ponytail palm to direct, intense sunlight, as it may scorch the leaves. If they don't receive enough bright light, their stems may grow leggy, become paler, and develop curly leaves. So make your ponytail palm happy and give it plenty of light.

If you are growing your ponytail palm outdoors, it can withstand full sun, but it prefers to grow in areas with some partial shade and avoid prolonged direct sunlight.

Learn to adjust your ponytail palm plant to avoid burns if the location where you have Beaucarnea recurvata is exposed to too much direct sunlight. Gradually increase the exposure until it can handle the full sun.

It's critical to remember that during a heatwave or periods of extreme heat, your Beaucarnea recurvata ponytail palm could still sustain sun damage or get sunburned. In this situation, you can protect your ponytail palm by moving it indoors or to a shaded area.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

When it comes to choosing the right soil for your adorable ponytail palm, you need to be careful. You see, the amount of moisture in the soil can literally make or break your little green friend. You've got root and stem rot faster than you can say "cactus." That's why we at Planet Desert have got your back with our Soil cactus mix blend 1 gal 4 qt cacti succulent dirt compost growing media. This organic mycorrhiza helps grow a healthy root system that makes all those thick, swollen stems stand tall and proud.  As an okay alternative, you can create your own succulent mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

Ideally, you should look for a natural fertilizer with an approximate blend of 5-10-15 that is higher in phosphorus than nitrogen. The best choice is to use natural fertilizer, as ponytail palm Beaucarnea recurvata lasts longer and keeps your soil alive by adding other beneficial compounds and microbes that encourage ponytail palm health and nutrient absorption.

Hardiness Zones & More

When it comes to indoor care, this Beaucarnea recurvata ponytail palm prefers average room temperatures between 65 and 75°F, making it suitable for most indoor settings. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, but it's best to avoid extreme cold drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations.

The ponytail palm Beaucarnea recurvata can tolerate average indoor humidity levels, but it appreciates a bit of dry air from time to time. Misting the leaves occasionally or placing the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water can help create a slightly more humid microclimate around the ponytail palms.

If you are living in USDA zones 9–11, you can grow your ponytail palm outdoors year-round. It thrives in warm climates and can tolerate full sun to partial shade outdoors.

In terms of temperature, it can withstand temperatures as low as 30°F for short periods, but it's generally recommended to protect it from frost and freezing temperatures.

It can tolerate low humidity levels, making it a great choice for outdoor landscapes in drier regions. However, it's important to note that excessive humidity or prolonged exposure to high humidity can lead to fungal issues or root rot.

Remember, the ponytail palms, as slow-growing species, can't stand frost or too much humidity; therefore, they need warm, dry conditions. A balanced ponytail palm care will help you maintain temperatures and prevent too much moisture.

Wildlife - Ponytail Palm Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The Ponytail Palm has small, fragrant flowers that can attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, or hummingbirds. While it’s primarily grown as an ornamental indoor plant, providing outdoor exposure during flowering can support local pollinator populations and enhance the plant’s natural beauty.

According to the ASPCA, the Ponytail Palm is non-toxic to humans, cats, dogs, and other common household pets. Its pet-friendly nature makes it an excellent choice for homes with animals, as it poses no significant health risk if leaves are chewed or ingested.

How to Propagate Your Ponytail Palm

The ponytail palm can be propagated through seeds or by offshoots that develop around the base of the ponytail palm plant. This method allows for quicker growth and ensures that the new plant retains the same characteristics as the parent plant. Repotting Ponytail palms is best done in the spring when the plant is actively growing. Be sure to use a well-draining potting mix to prevent root rot.

Absolutely fabulous products!
Size: Width 14", Adjustable Desk Mount, Style: Dual
The only downfall of this product is that there is no instant up/down adjustment on the arms. Otherwise this mount is outstanding. It is easy to put together, the only items you'll want that aren't in the box are a screwdriver and a wrench. It went up in just a couple of minutes, and it's sturdy and very well made. I like that I can put it flush to a wall because it does not need any room behind it. This is beyond amazing for the inexpensive cost. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Also adding to the awesomeness is an array of additional arms and accessories for this you can find from Wali to make your setup perfect for you, all at great prices. I've got my office setup complete with three arms and two laptop trays and the whole thing cost less than a single arm I purchased from Amazon Basics. Handy thought regarding the laptop trays is that they're a nice size, and with the catch at the bottom, I've found I like to use it as a literature tray. I drop a book on there and it holds it at a nice angle to read from when transferring or referencing data. The trays do bounce some when typing, but much less than any other type of arm/tray system I've ever used. Highly recommended!

Not as complicated to put together as it seems, and quite sturdy
Size: Width 14", Adjustable Desk Mount, Style: Triple
When I first unpacked this stand, I was initially overwhelmed by the number of parts that were included in the package. I didn’t realize there were extra parts included to offer you two choices for how to mount the stand to your workstation. Once I got that sorted out, I relaxed a bit more and was able to assemble the unit single-handedly and mount two 22” monitors and a laptop to give myself more room on my desk. It was a bit challenging to move the arms to just the right angles and height, but I did get it after a few tries. I used the re-positionable clamp instead of the desk- through grommet mount. It feels very sturdy, and I feel as long as I periodically check the tension and tightness of the bolts, it will hold up everything just fine. I am not thrilled with the cable management clamps that attach to the round center pole, so I’ll probably end up looking for different clamps or even just velcro fasteners to loop around the post. The clamps that snap onto the arms themselves are fine and hold the Displayport and power cords in place well. I thought about dinging this unit a star for the weird center post clamps and also because the black coating on part of the round post is flaking off, but really, I can work with those things/cover up the cosmetic issues. I was super-impressed by the way the hardware was included in labeled, individual plastic compartments. The instructions were pretty good, too, although I would have liked the print to be a little larger - once you hit your forties, you reach for readers or have to get up close and squint to see small print… Overall, I’m pleased with this unit.

Game changer
Size: Width 14", Adjustable Desk Mount, Style: Dual, Size: Width 14", Adjustable Desk Mount, Style: Dual
**update 2026** Okay I've just upgraded this mount so let me update my review. I am keeping 5 stars because for an entry level budget mount it did its job. Here's why I changed: if your desk is not solid wood, the base of the mount is too narrow and will start to sink in. Also, after a few years one of the arm started to sag. I upgraded for a mount double this price so not outrageous but the base is wider and the arms are sturdier. I am still happy I purchased that one because for my budget it did the job so these years and it's better than not having it. Still recommend if your budget is low and you need to save desk space, it's a great starter. If you can wait and save twice this, I suggest you do and skip to the better ones though. **original review 2020** Been using this mount for about 3 months, time to review: It is an absolute game changer! Cheap, easy to assemble and install, feels sturdy. At first my wife was skeptical because she thought it would be a gimmick but it frees up so much space, it brings both monitors to the same eye-level height, the mouse cable never gets stuck under the laptop anymore, and it holds the cables in place so that when she has to run with the laptop they don't fall behind the desk anymore (see picture). All these little details improved her productivity. And just visually it looks much better I think. Laptop: 15" Monitor: 24"

Works fine overall, but... "you get what you pay for"
Size: Width 16.5", Fully Adjustable Desk Mount, Style: Single
Filed under: "you get what you pay for"? I like the price point and FOR THE MOST PART this arm is getting the job done in my home office space *but* a few points... (1) The little "claw" to hold the laptop in place has these little "locks" that are on the under side which... that's OK but they can be hard to see and it just seems like an extra part that can break -- vs. a ratcheting clamp. (2) The tension on every movable part was ALL out of whack when I first installed it. I set the laptop onto the cradle and it basically collapsed -- flipping down as far as it would go. I had to adjust the tension to be significantly higher in order to hold steady -- but NOW it's hard to "fine-tune" because the tension on that joint is so stiff. On the other hand, the main "elbow" joint is easy to adjust *and* holds steady all day, but within seconds of taking my laptop off of the arm, it springs up -- sometimes rather violently. (3) The overall build quality seems a little weak. The main screw to hold the laptop stand in place had a little cap to make it easier to twist it by hand -- but this snapped off during the initial installation. Not a deal-breaker because once it was in place, I didn't expect to move it again BUT it was still disappointing. (4) Not a deal-breaker for me BUT... there's practically no included cable management. Just... be aware of that. Otherwise... instructions were pretty clear vis-à-vis how to install and -- like I said -- it seems to be getting the job done w/r/t/ getting the laptop up off the desk and MOSTLY aligned with my other monitors.

Superb quality. Couldn't be happier.
Size: Width 14", Adjustable Desk Mount, Style: Dual
I have been looking for a separate monitor and laptop stand for a while now and recently came across this set up from WALI. For under $50, I was a little nervous about the quality before it arrived. I had no reason to be concerned. It is a SOLID set up. Everything is high-quality metal construction and secure when assembled. Set up took some doing but only because I am not the most, um, detailed direction follower...Make sure you tighten the tray and post screws TIGHTLY initially to prevent any kind of movement after you've assembled it (don't ask me how I know). I have a 15'' Asus laptop and the lip on the tray holds it fine as long as I don't tip it too far forward. But it's an unusually thick laptop body so I imagine most won't have an issue. Again, it's not a problem for me at all, just limits slightly the angle I can tilt the tray. If you are ok with the configuration shown in the primary product image (i.e., monitor above tray) then it will be no problem as is. My desk isn't that deep so I had wanted them to be side-by-side. I was able to set it up that way out of the box. But my monitor was just a hair too big and it cast a shadow on the laptop monitor in the side by side configuration. Support was kind enough to send me a second base post and screws so I could use the grommet and clamp bases at the same time (as is you can only use one or the other). This of course only works if you already have a hole in the desk (or are willing to put one in yourself). Many thanks to WALI's support crew for accommodating me. I use a standing desk. If movement while you type is something you're fussy about (I'm not) note there will be some shake, especially in the standing position. But for most, it should be absolutely no problem. Overall a fantastic deal. Highly recommend it!
