Philodendron El Choco Red is a captivating tropical plant renowned for its large, heart-shaped leaves with velvety textures and striking red undersides. Native to the rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador, this climbing aroid adds a touch of exotic elegance to indoor spaces.
Care Guidelines:
-
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light levels, optimal growth and vibrant foliage are achieved with ample indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching.
-
Watering: Maintain consistently moist soil, allowing the top inch to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot; ensure the pot has proper drainage.
-
Humidity: Prefers high humidity levels, ideally above 60%. Increase humidity by misting the leaves, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a tray filled with water and pebbles.
-
Temperature: Favors temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect from cold drafts and avoid exposure to temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
-
Soil: Requires a well-draining, airy potting mix rich in organic matter. A blend of potting soil, orchid bark, perlite, and charcoal is suitable.
-
Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed monthly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half strength. Reduce feeding during fall and winter when growth slows.
-
Support: As a climbing plant, providing a moss pole or trellis encourages vertical growth and supports larger leaf development.
