Corn Snakes, Milksnakes, Kingsnakes and Ball Pythons are among the most popular snakes kept and bred in captivity. Their variety of colors and patterns, moderate adult size, docile nature and reluctance to bite, make these attractive species for both the beginning reptile enthusiast as well as the advanced hobbyist.

Snake facts:
Scientific name: Corn Snake: Pantherophis guttatus – Milksnake & Kingsnake: Lampropeltis species – Ball Python: Python regius
Family: Corn Snakes, Milksnakes and Kingsnakes belong to the family Colubridae – Ball Pythons belong to family Pythonidae
Distribution: Corn snakes occur naturally in the southeastern part of the United States. Kingsnakes and milk snakes can be found throughout North and South America. Ball Pythons are native to Africa occurring in a narrow belt stretching along the southern border of the Sahara desert from Senegal in the west to Sudan and Uganda in central Africa.
Average hatchling size: 8-12 inches (20-30cm)
Average adult size: 3-5.5 feet (90-165 cm)
Average life span: 15-25 years (some individuals even live 30+ years)
Housing: Exo Terra’s Natural Terrarium MEDIUM/LOW is ideal for Corn Snakes, Milksnakes, Kingsnakes and juvenile Ball Pythons. Corn Snakes can be housed together in pairs or small groups, but need to be fed individually and separately. Kingsnakes and Milksnakes should be housed individually, as some species have been known to eat each other! To avoid stress or even hunger strike, Ball Pythons are also best housed individually. It is recommended to house hatchling and juvenile snakes of all species individually, as they can grow at different rates and can sometimes become stressed from overcrowding.
Substrate: The Exo Terra Moss Mat is an ideal soft, hygienic and absorbent substrate for all Snakes.
Decoration: The Exo Terra Reptile Cave mimics the natural hiding places of Colubrids and Ball Pythons – it provides shelter and a cooler and more humid microclimate. Additional décor can be added for extra security and aesthetics.
Lighting: Colubrids and Ball Pythons are mainly crepuscular, meaning they’re most active during dusk and dawn, but some are also active during daytime – the Exo Terra Reptile UVB100 emits an optimal light spectrum that will allow your Snake to experience and perceive colors from their environment more naturally – Snakes need a 12-hour day/night cycle.
Heating: To allow your Colubrids and Ball Pythons to thermoregulate their body temperature, they should be offered a daytime temperature gradient by heating approximately 1/3 of the floor space (85-90°F / 29-32°C)* by placing the Exo Terra Heat Mat on one side of the terrarium floor, so 2/3 will remain cool (75-80°F /24°-27°C) – keep the nighttime temperature at an average of 70-75°F (21-24°C). * Ball Pythons can tolerate temperatures up to 95°F / 35°C. Additional heating (like the Exo Terra Infrared Basking Spot, Night Heat Lamp or Ceramic Heater) may be necessary if temperatures fall below the recommended range.
Food: Colubrids and Ball Pythons are carnivorous, consuming mostly small rodents. In captivity snakes are fed primarily mice of the appropriate size. Snakes should be offered 1 mouse per week. Baby snakes feed on pinkie mice, and as your snake grows, the size of the mice should graduate from pinkie to fuzzy, than hoppers and lastly adult mice. A guide for size selection is that the width of the mouse should be no more than one and half times the width (diameter) of the snake’s body at its thickest. Adult or larger snakes may require 2 adult mice or 1 appropriately sized rat per feeding. To prevent risk of injury in snakes it is best to offer prekilled, frozen/thawed mice. Make sure the mice are fully thawed before offering them. Do not handle your snake for at least 24-48 hours after feeding, as this may disturb the digestive system, and cause your snake to regurgitate it’s food.
Watering: Always provide your pet snake with fresh, clean drinking water in the Exo Terra medium Water Dish. Use Exo Terra Aquatize Terrarium Water Conditioner to remove Chlorine & Chloramine as well as to neutralize heavy metals from the tap water.

Practical help for a challenging transition of parenthood
Format: Paperback
I have long been a fan of Dr. Kathy, having read several of her books as well as heard her speak at conferences. She is always down to earth with practical ideas and spiritual truths. I was provided an advance, free copy of this book to read and preview, and I must say it was such as relevant topic to me - I have two young adult children, one who is fully launched and one still at home. Full disclosure - I am only through chapter 3, but that is because I wanted to take my time and digest the applications of this book! Some ideas I am already contemplepating and implementing: - avoiding placing my child (and their happiness) as a sort of idol in my life - an echo of what I'd already sensed - I need to shift my role from parent to invided guide -humbly confronting my own assumptions and beliefs as a pathway to open dialog - tackling the hard work of bcoming an active, intentional and sensitive listener. I had a digital copy so underlining wasn't practical, but that may be good as I'd want to underline most of the book so far! Each chapter has a mixture of concepts, ideas for building skills in real life and suggested prayers. I can't wait to finish the book - I actually ordered two hard copies for my husband and I to read and discuss together. Thank you for this book!

I will read it again and refer to it often.
Format: Paperback
"I hope and pray that what I've written has been what you needed - comforting, relevant, and appropriately challenging insights and ideas that will guide you to have more peace, hope, and growth. I picture you feeling differently, thinking differently, and using new ideas for God's glory. " Dr. Kathy Koch In my current moment, the wise guidance offered in Dr. Kathy's latest book is a valuable gift. Where many resources fail or miss the heart of things - the thoughts offered by Dr. Kathy in this book are practical, God honoring, honest, accessible, challenging, real. It is common to find resources aimed at Jesus followers that land as impractical platitudes. It is common to find resources claiming psychological excellence that bury the reader in therapeutic blame shifting. This book is neither of those things and I am so grateful. With a grown married child, an adult estranged child, an adult child still at home, a pre-launched teen, an aging parent, a frightening and sad loss of purpose in middle-age...I am the center of the target audience. Each chapter brings focus to different areas of adult relationships that are prone to conflict. Each chapter ends with very useful tools to help focus on areas of healing and growth. The prompts for intentional, grace-filled communication are clear and immensely useful. There is compassionate seeing, firm challenge, and hopeful help. This book goes on my reference shelf for easy access!

What Do I Do When My DIL Wants to Cut Me Out of Her Life Along with My Granddaughter?
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Answer to my question in my Review Title: I pray and God provided me this book! I just finished reading it, and I just couldn't wait to write this review! I highly recommending reading this book, if you are having any problems with your adult children, especially chapters 9-11. For me, like the title says, I didn't know what to do when my DIL said, "... I will be stepping back from contact for the foreseeable future. This includes cards, letters, gifts, or other communication unless I say otherwise." Since receiving that text message in December 2025, I have been praying about what to do. Just last week, my son texted me some very angry text messages, even demanding that I delete all virtual pictures of my granddaughter and giving him all my physical pictures of her (which I will do because of Matthew 5:38-42)! What amazing timing though to be reading this book! Praise God! My son has not closed the door yet on our relationship, so I have hope that I can implement some of the ideas in this book! See photo to see my notes (i.e. questions) that I wrote from the book that I could possibly ask him, if he is willing to meet with me. I pray that he does. Thank you SO much, Dr. Kathy, for writing this book! God is using you and your ministry. God bless you.

Timeless Wisdom with Real Action Steps
Format: Paperback
I was blessed to read this book prelease and am delighted to share that this book is a must read for all parents with adult children. Dr. Kathy provides very helpful insight in first understanding the foundations of the relationship based on the core needs of the parent and the child. Her explanations are very convicting but I don't feel condemned for previous shortcomings; rather I feel inspired to improve and apologize. I particularly appreciate the realistic action steps and examples of actual words to think/speak in the first person so I can retrain myself to think, speak, and relate to my children. Dr. Kathy equips readers by providing step by step explanations of 1) What to do; 2) Why it works and; 3) How to do it . It is brilliant and so helpful. However, she does not provide false hope because sometimes love is not enough in the case of prodigals and she shares Truth with parents and acknowledges the the very real pain and loneliness that can result then follows-up with real action steps and reminds us of our hope in Christ. As always, the wisdom in the book is timeless and can be applied across multiple relationships in life including my relationship with my own parents where I am the child and even in communicating with my husband. I am grateful for the Celebrate Kids ministry and Dr. Kathy. I am constantly learning something new and am grateful.

Real action steps. You will love this book!
Format: Paperback
If you have adult children, I promise you will be blessed by this book. So many times books have good insight, but then when life happens, it is easy to forget the wisdom of the book. This book is different. It has real actionable steps that you can take to help parents let go of their children. As we raise little people, it’s easy to wrap your identity up in your family life. This book helped me see where I was still finding identity in my kids and how to make sure that we are finding our identity and healthier ways. She includes a Declaration of Release in the book. Reading it brought tears to my eyes. It made me realize it’s OK to grieve the young family we once had but also to embrace my growing and maturing adult children. I want to have a healthy relationship with my kids and their spouses and I’m confident this book is like a very wise friend offering advice and walking this path with me. I was blessed to read a free copy of the ebook but I’ve already purchased my own paper copy of the book so I can make notes and refer back to it more easily.
