Denim 'n Lace Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Denim 'n Lace')

Denim 'n Lace Russian Sage is a sun-loving perennial that brings a long season of airy blue color with a clean, upright shape. Its silvery, aromatic foliage keeps borders looking light and refined, even in the hottest part of summer. The sturdy stems hold the flower display up and out, so the plant stays composed instead of flopping into its neighbors. If you want dependable late-season impact in a low-water landscape, this is an easy win.

Distinctive Features

This variety is known for bright, sky-blue to lavender-blue flower spikes held on deeper-toned calyxes, creating a fuller, more colorful look for a long stretch of the season. The finely cut, gray-green foliage is fragrant when brushed, and the overall habit is upright and well-branched for a crisp, architectural presence. Bloom typically runs from mid to late summer into fall, drawing pollinators and adding movement without visual heaviness.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering, strongest stems, and the cleanest habit.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and average to lean soils often perform best.
  • Water: Water regularly to establish, then water occasionally; drought tolerant once established.
  • USDA Zones: 4 to 9.
  • Mature Size: About 28 to 32 inches tall and 34 to 38 inches wide.
  • Notable Traits: Aromatic foliage, strong heat tolerance, and good deer resistance in many landscapes.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use a drift as a focal point where the sky-blue flower haze can anchor the view from mid summer into fall.
  • Border Structure: Adds upright lines and a light, airy layer behind mounding perennials.
  • Waterwise Planting: Excellent for dry borders and low-water designs with fast drainage.
  • Mass Planting: Repeats beautifully to create a cohesive, modern ribbon of silver foliage and blue bloom.
  • Pollinator Gardens: Supports bees, butterflies, and other beneficial visitors during peak bloom.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Cut back hard in late winter to early spring to encourage fresh growth and a dense, tidy habit.
  • Watering: Avoid soggy soil, and let the root zone dry between deep waterings once established.
  • Feeding: Skip heavy fertilizer, since rich soil can reduce bloom and soften stems.
  • Spacing: Provide airflow and avoid crowding to keep foliage and stems clean.
  • Season Cleanup: Remove old stems in early spring, and leave winter stems standing for simple cold-season structure if desired.

Why Choose Denim 'n Lace Russian Sage?

  • Long Season Color: Delivers sky-blue to lavender-blue bloom from mid to late summer into fall.
  • Stronger Stems: Holds its shape well for a more upright, composed look in the border.
  • Silver Foliage Texture: Adds a refined, airy layer that pairs with almost any palette.
  • Heat and Drought Tolerance: Thrives in hot, sunny sites once established with good drainage.
  • Pollinator Magnet: Brings steady garden activity during the heart of the season.

If you want a perennial that keeps summer beds looking polished while delivering dependable late-season bloom, Denim 'n Lace Russian Sage earns its space. Plant it in full sun with sharp drainage, then let it do what it does best in heat. Pair it with ornamental grasses, coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, or deep green shrubs for strong contrast and an easy, layered look. With a simple spring cutback, it returns ready to perform again.

Good for my collection.
Format: Hardcover
This was another quick and entertaining read. This instalment wasn't as enjoyable as some of the other books but it was still good. I'm glad to have it in my collection.

Go-Go and Buy this Book
This was the twelfth Simpsons Comics book I've read and, while it's not the best of the dozen, it is still a very funny book and a must for the Simpsons comics connoisseur (you got to love the cover art). Here's what you get: "Rhymes and Misdemeanors": Martin Prince is in love with Lisa and, when his love is unrequited, they both do battle in the form of poetry readings at a nightclub dissing each other. "The Great Springfield Frink-Out": A giant mishap occurs at the Frink labs (actually someone put tin foil in the microwave). This event causes everything to be topsy-turvy in Springfield, for example, Marge is the mayor, Homer is a mobster, Cecil is the celebrity clown, and Bart has ambitions to be as cool as Milhouse. "Tiger Teen": Fun mock mini mag in the style of those old 16 and Tiger Beat teen magazines of our youth. Of course, this one features Homer's barber shop group Be Sharps ("Homer Answers 40 Intimate Questions"-is that a perfect copy of those teen magazines or what?). There are also a few familiar names of 80s pop stars on the cover ("Cory Hart Takes off his Sunglasses-Exclusive photos!") "Burnsie on Board": Mr. Burns tries to live out his boyhood dream of being an Olympic skiing gold medalist by enlisting the help of Bart. "To Live and Diaper in Springfield": To pay for an expensive toilet paper dispenser Homer desires from an extravagant shopping network, Marge starts a daycare center. Her attention to other babies (particularly the one with the single eyebrow) causes Maggie to run away. "Fan-Tasty Island": Mr. Burns needs a rare toxin to get by the Coalition to Reduce Air Pollution. This toxin can only be found inside a wood carving on a remote island. The perfect cover-up is to send a family to find the treasure-the Simpsons, of course. Very funny comic, but the ending is a little far-fetched.
