Introducing the stunning elephant's foot succulent, also known as Dioscorea elephantipes a succulent plant that belongs to the Dioscoreaceae family. It earned its common name, elephant’s foot plant, because of its tuberous caudex, which resembles an elephant's foot during its growth period. The caudex is the swollen underground stem that stores water and nutrients for your Elephant's foot succulent.

The Dioscorea elephantipes have several other common names, such as Hottentot bread, Tortoise back plant, and Turtle back plant. Native to the arid regions of South Africa and Namibia, this beautiful plant has thick, fleshy stems and heart-shaped leaves covered in a waxy cuticle, which helps reduce water loss and protect it from extreme temperatures.

The Elephant Foot plant is a slow-growing species that can grow up to 10 feet tall and 3 feet wide.

Over time it develops a thick caudex that resembles an elephant's foot or small tree trunk and has a rough and textured surface.

As the Dioscorea elephantipes elephant’s foot plant matures, it produces tendrils that can climb and attach to nearby structures for support.

The Dioscorea elephantipes is summer-deciduous, dropping its leaves during the summer, with stems typically dying back and new shoots emerging in winter.

The flowers of Dioscorea elephantipes are greenish-yellow and bloom in late fall and early winter. This elephant foot plant is dioecious, with male and female flowers in separate plants. The pale greenish-yellow flowers appear in winter, with male flowers in erect racemes and female flowers in spinescent spikes. They grow on long, slender stalks that emerge from the Dioscorea elephantipes caudex, adding a touch of charm to this already fascinating plant.

With its unique appearance and adaptability, the Elephant Foot succulent is a captivating addition to any succulent collection. Its distinctive caudex and climbing tendrils make it a real eye-catcher. Ensure proper conditions and care for this stunning plant, which can live for over 70 years and is a prized addition to collections for its architectural beauty.

When and How to Water Your Dioscorea Elephantipes

When it comes to watering this unique Elephant's foot succulent, it's important to strike the right balance. Dioscorea elephantipes is adapted to arid conditions, so it prefers infrequent but thorough waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot and other problems, so it's critical to let the soil dry between waterings.

During the growing season, which is typically winter and spring, you can water your Elephant Foot plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. When you do water, make sure to provide a deep soak, allowing the water to penetrate the soil and reach the roots. Allow the excess water to drain completely.

In the dormant season, which is usually in late summer, you'll want to reduce watering significantly. The succulent Elephant's foot goes through a period of rest, and its water requirements decrease. During this time, you can water separate plants sparingly, only when the soil has completely dried out.

Remember, it's always better to underwater than overwater to your Dioscorea elephantipes. This succulent plant is adapted to survive in dry conditions and can tolerate short periods of drought. By following these watering guidelines, you'll help ensure the health and longevity of your Elephant Foot plant.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Elephant's Foot Succulent

When it comes to indoor lighting, the Elephant Foot succulent does best in bright, indirect light. It thrives in a spot near a window where it can receive plenty of bright, filtered sunlight. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, as this can cause the leaves to scorch.

If you're growing Dioscorea elephantipes outdoors, it prefers a sunny location with partial shade to full sun for at least 4-6 hours a day.

It can handle direct sunlight, but it's important to acclimate your elephant foot plant gradually to prevent sunburn. Start by placing it in a partially shaded area and gradually increase the exposure to sunlight over time.

Keep in mind that the light requirements may vary depending on your specific climate and the intensity of sunlight in your region. Observing your Dioscorea elephantipe's response to light is key.

If the leaves start to turn yellow or develop brown spots, it may be an indication that it's receiving too much direct light. On the other hand, if the leaves become elongated and pale, it may be a sign of insufficient light.

Remember to rotate your Elephant Foot succulent occasionally to ensure even growth and prevent it from leaning toward the light source.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The elephant's foot plant likes very airy, porous, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 5.6- 6.5. Cacti require fast-draining soil that dries completely between waterings. Your soil must have a sandy texture and a low water-holding capacity, just like desert soil.  Soggy, wet soil can damage your cactus and contribute to bacterial and fungal rot. In addition, because of a lack of oxygen, soggy soil substitutes air pockets with water, resulting in an anaerobic environment that can kill your plant.

As an alternative, you can create your own potting mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil. Ideally, you want to use our specialized succulent potting mixGo to soil cactus mix blend 1 gal 4 qt cacti succulent dirt compost growing media that contains 5 natural substrates and organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your Elephant's foot succulent to thrive.

For fertilizer, Dioscorea elephantipes don't require frequent feeding. During the growing season, you can use a balanced (5-10-5), water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength. Apply the fertilizer once a year to provide the necessary nutrients. However, it's important not to over-fertilize, as this can cause excessive growth and weak stems.

During the dormant season, you can reduce or completely stop fertilizing. The elephant foot succulent goes through a period of rest, and its nutrient requirements decrease. Remember, it's always better to err on the side of caution and under-fertilize rather than over-fertilize. This will help maintain the succulent natural growth habits and prevent any potential issues.

Hardiness Zone & More

When it comes to indoor temperature, the Elephant Foot plant prefers a warm environment. Ideally, keep the temperature between 65°F and 75°F during the day and slightly cooler at night. It's important to avoid exposing the plant to extreme temperature fluctuations, as it can be sensitive to sudden changes. Make sure to keep it away from drafts and cold windows to prevent any damage.

If you are growing your Dioscorea elephantipes outdoors, it thrives in USDA zones 9 to 11. These zones generally have mild to warm climates with winter temperatures that rarely drop below freezing.

If you live in a colder region, it's best to grow this plant as a container specimen that can be brought indoors during the colder months.

In terms of humidity, Dioscorea elephantipes elephant foot succulent can tolerate a range of humidity levels. It can adapt to average indoor humidity, but it appreciates slightly higher humidity levels. If the air in your home is dry, you can increase humidity by placing a tray of water near the succulent plant or using a humidifier.

Remember, in extremely cold temperatures, it's important to protect your Elephant Foot plant. If you're growing it outdoors, consider covering it with a frost cloth or moving it to a sheltered location during freezing weather.

Wildlife - Dioscorea elephantipes Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

During its flowering season, this caudex plant produces small, fragrant flowers that attract a variety of friendly pollinators, such as bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Bees are particularly drawn to its blossoms, aiding in pollination. In regions where it grows outdoors, butterflies and hummingbirds may also visit the plant, lured by the nectar and subtle aroma of its flowers.

According to the ASPCA, the elephant’s foot is considered mildly toxic to humans and pets if consumed in a large amount. It is safe to handle, but it is important to wash your hands thoroughly after touching the plant to avoid any potential irritation or allergic reactions.

Propagating Elephant's Foot Plant

One common method of propagation for this elephant foot plant is through Dioscorea elephantipes elephants foot succulent by seeds. You can collect the seeds from the seed capsule of the mature fruits of the plant and sow them in a well-draining potting mix in flat seed pans. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and place the sowing medium in a warm location with indirect sunlight. With patience, the seeds should germinate and grow into new plants.

Another method is through stem cuttings. Pick a robust stem and carefully cut the stem right below a node. Give the wound several days to callus and dry. After that, plant the cutting, keeping the remaining portion of it exposed and putting the node in a container with well-draining soil. Give the soil some light moisture and indirect sunlight. With time, the cutting should develop roots and establish itself as a new growth.

Remember, propagation can take time and patience, so don't be discouraged if it doesn't happen overnight. Keep an eye on the moisture levels, provide the right amount of light, and soon you'll have new Dioscorea elephantipes plants to enjoy!

My go-to sublimation paper for crafting
Size: 8.5"x11"
I've used several sublimation papers, and this one has worked really well for my crafting projects. The colors transfer bright and vibrant, and the images come out crisp with good detail when using the proper sublimation printer and ink. The paper feeds smoothly through my printer and feels like a good quality weight—not too thin and not overly thick. I've used it for tumblers, keychains, and other sublimation projects, and I've been happy with the results. I also appreciate getting 110 sheets in one pack because it lasts a while, especially when working on multiple projects at once. Overall, this is a reliable sublimation paper that gives consistent results and is great for crafters or small business owners.

Escaping the Cartridge Trap: How This Refillable Powerhouse Completely Supercharged My Workflow!
For as long as I have been setting up home offices, the traditional ink cartridge has been my absolute greatest nemesis. There is nothing quite as frustrating as firing up a crucial document only to be met with that dreaded, blinking low-ink warning right when you are on a tight deadline. That is exactly why bringing the white Epson EcoTank ET-2903 Wireless All-in-One Color Supertank Printer into my workspace has been an absolute breath of fresh air. Finished in a clean, minimalist white, this machine completely bypasses the antiquated, expensive cartridge ecosystem. It looks incredibly sleek and modern sitting on my desk, blending seamlessly into my setup without projecting the bulky, industrial vibe of older, traditional machines. Right out of the gate, it feels like a highly engineered, premium piece of technology designed specifically to make daily document management drastically easier and far more efficient. The sheer brilliance of this printer lies in its wildly innovative cartridge-free supertank architecture. Instead of swapping out tiny, expensive plastic squares every few weeks, this machine utilizes massive, front-facing ink reservoirs. Epson incredibly includes up to three years of ink right in the box, which equates to roughly eighty individual standard cartridges. Loading the ink is where the engineering truly shines; the proprietary EcoFit 522 ink bottles are uniquely keyed to their specific color slots, making it physically impossible to mix up the cyan, magenta, yellow, or black. The bottles automatically stop dispensing the exact moment the tank is full, ensuring a completely foolproof, zero-spill experience. Not only does this system save a phenomenal amount of money over the lifespan of the printer, but it also dramatically reduces the massive amount of plastic waste normally destined for landfills. Plus, being able to physically see exactly how much ink I have left at a mere glance provides unmatched peace of mind. When it comes to putting ink on paper, this machine is an absolute powerhouse that consistently delivers remarkably crisp, professional-grade results. It reliably pushes out sharp, highly legible black text documents at a brisk 11 pages per minute, making quick work of dense contracts, shipping labels, and lengthy reports. The color performance is equally stunning, operating at 6 pages per minute to produce vibrant, perfectly saturated graphics and incredibly high-quality photo prints. The color accuracy is truly exceptional, giving life to presentations and flyers with punchy, true-to-life tones that never look washed out. Coupled with a highly convenient 100-sheet rear paper capacity, the entire printing process is incredibly smooth and uninterrupted. I am never bogged down constantly reloading the tray, allowing me to effortlessly maintain my momentum during demanding, high-volume workdays. Beyond its spectacular printing capabilities, the built-in flatbed scanner and copier transform this unit into a comprehensive command center for all of my document needs. The scanner captures physical media with spectacular clarity and high-resolution detail, making the process of digitizing old tax records or preserving physical photographs incredibly easy and accurate. Navigating through all of these robust features is remarkably intuitive, thanks to the dedicated 1.44-inch color display located right on the front panel. The screen is bright, responsive, and paired with a highly logical button layout that allows me to initiate copies, execute scans, or perform quick maintenance tasks without ever having to boot up my laptop or dive into convoluted software menus. The wireless connectivity is the final piece of the puzzle that makes this printer an absolute joy to operate on a daily basis. Equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi 4, it establishes a rock-solid connection to my home network that never drops or wavers. The smart mobile printing functionality is incredibly seamless; I can easily select a photo or document on my smartphone while lounging in the living room and have it instantly printing in the office down the hall. It completely untethers me from the desk, offering a level of modern convenience that I simply refuse to live without. The Epson EcoTank ET-2903 is a phenomenally capable, remarkably efficient, and incredibly fun machine to use. It entirely eliminates the stress and extortionate costs of traditional printing, delivering a flawless user experience that I cannot recommend highly enough for anyone looking to seriously upgrade their productivity game.

Epson is Epic!
This review is for the Epson EcoTank ET-2903 All-in-One Color Supertanker Printer. I am having a difficult time finding enough superlative words to describe how awesome this printer is. Let me begin by saying this printer blows any competition out of the water. I have personally owned several, highly touted, printers in the past four years and either they have underperformed, had complications or had major connectivity issues. They were a source of constant frustration. Then, I was able to procure an Epson EcoTank printer in the office where I work and have loved it. So, when I saw this Epson ET-2903 EcoTank, I did not hesitate to order it. Out of the box, you receive an all in one printer, a very precise set of instructions, and 4 bottles of high quality ink in Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. The printer is designed to work with the Epson Smart Panel app which guides you effortlessly through the installation and printer initialization process. Epson made this process very easy to set up, even for someone not very tech savvy. With the app, you can use your computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone to print wirelessly to your printer. The difference with this EcoTank printer versus ink cartridge/toner printers is that each color ink has a separate refillable tank well that uses fluid ink. My office Epson EcoTank ink lasts and lasts and lasts and is very economical. I expect this ET-2903 will ink will last as well. I printed out my initial test page and all is working perfectly. I then printed out a color wheel to test the colors. It printed vibrant, beautiful colors in only seconds with the capability of printing 11 pages per minute. The printer is equipped with a scanning bed to easily scan and print any documents or photos. You can also scan an import any document/picture directly to your mobile phone, tablet or computer. One of the things I have learned about printers with ink tanks is that because they use liquid ink, they work a little differently from standard ink cartridge printers. Each color tank has tubes that run from the tanks to the printhead, providing excellent quality prints each time. However, an issue with this type of printer can be that they can occasionally get clogged if they sit idle for long periods. To prevent this, under the maintenance option on the control panel, I run a nozzle check periodically that takes only seconds to run. If it appears that there is a clog, the maintenance menu has a printhead self-clean option for easy cleaning. I was impressed with how lightweight the printer is and the dimensions are perfect for smaller areas. I measured the printer to be approximately 14.2” Length x 12.5” Deep x 6.4” High and can easily sit atop a desk, printer cart or shelf. Epson got this printer right and I can honestly say if you are looking for an economical, easy to use and reliable printer, you can buy this printer with confidence. With one click on my phone, I said goodbye to clunky disposable ink cartridges that are environmentally unfriendly, and hello to refillable tanks when I placed my order. I am thrilled with this printer and wholeheartedly recommend it.

Well Designed, Prints Clearly and Accurately, Software is a Bit of a Pain To Set Up
I've never used a printer in my entire life that didn't use finicky ink cartridges that are almost more expensive than the printer itself and need to be constantly replaced; this is a breath of fresh air, despite the dangers of spilling ink and making a mess. I found filling this with ink to be really easy, since you only have to pout the ink bottle in the correct port and leave it to fill itself, which takes about 10-15 seconds. the included ink bottles really only give you enough for a complete fill: You fill it, the printer set up charges the printer with ink, and the remaining ink in the bottles can refill about to the "max" line. Still, I really like this method. The top of the printer pops open like the hood of a car, to access the filling ports. It then has to be lowered down in two stages, presumably to prevent dropping the lid on fingers, though it doesn't seem heavy enough to cause major damage to adult fingers, and I have the printer elevated away from little fingers. This thing has the tiniest little LCD screen! It's a bit tricky on the Epson website to determine which software you need specifically. Obviously, my goal is to have a wireless printer for the entire home network. Some of the software seems specifically web-based, so you could theoretically print from work to a home printer, etc., though I balked at setting up or using an email address to send print jobs to. The wireless was annoyingly tricky to set up. I am still not sure if you're supposed to connect a computer and the printer to the wifi separately, or the printer first and then the computer would automatically recognize it, or what. I did successfully connect the printer to the wifi, but couldn't install some of the Epson software - it kept failing - but a quick test did allow me to print wirelessly, so I decided to just call it good and be done. Everything I have printed has been very clear and crisp. It could be a little darker and have more contrast, but that may be how I printed, or printing from pdf. It printed without jamming or sticking, and everything came through quickly and accurately, without leaks or streaks on my paper. I haven't tried the photocopier function though, since I mainly need it for printing and not scanning.

No automatic double sided. Bulky external paper tray
Set up was easy. I didn’t like the exterior paper storage. The whole printer was slick and stealthy until it got to that obnoxious tray. Set up was easy. Printer does not have automatic duplex capabilities you have to manually flip the paper to do double sided. I also didn’t think the printing quality was great.
