Monstera Borsigiana Variegata Albo Care

Watering

Proper watering is crucial for the health of your Monstera Borsigiana Variegata Albo. This plant prefers a consistent watering schedule, allowing the top inch of the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's essential to ensure that the pot has good drainage. During the growing season (spring and summer), you may need to water more frequently, but always be cautious not to let the plant sit in waterlogged soil.

Light

Monstera Borsigiana Variegata Albo thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, particularly the variegated parts, which are more sensitive to light. A spot near an east or west-facing window with filtered light is ideal. If the plant doesn't receive enough light, the variegation may fade, and the plant's growth could slow down. If natural light is insufficient, consider supplementing with grow lights to maintain its vibrant appearance.

Temperature

This Monstera variety prefers a warm and stable environment, with temperatures ranging between 65-80°F (18-27°C). It can tolerate slightly lower temperatures, but anything below 55°F (13°C) could stress the plant and inhibit its growth. Avoid placing the plant near drafts, air conditioning vents, or heaters, as sudden temperature fluctuations can cause damage to the delicate leaves.

Soil Mix

A well-draining soil mix is essential for the Monstera Borsigiana Variegata Albo. A mix that includes peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark works well, providing the right balance of moisture retention and aeration. This combination ensures that the roots have access to both water and air, which is critical for preventing root rot and promoting healthy growth. Adding some activated charcoal to the mix can also help keep the soil fresh and prevent any unwanted odors.

Humidity

Monstera Borsigiana Variegata Albo thrives in a humid environment, mimicking its natural tropical habitat. Aim for a humidity level of 60-80%. If your home has dry air, especially during winter, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water to increase the humidity around it. Regular misting can also help, but avoid misting directly onto the leaves to prevent fungal issues.

Fertilizer

Feeding your Monstera Borsigiana Variegata Albo is important to support its growth, especially during the growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks. Over-fertilizing can cause a buildup of salts in the soil, which can harm the roots, so it's best to err on the side of caution. During the dormant season (fall and winter), reduce the frequency of fertilization to avoid stressing the plant.

Toxicity

While the Monstera Borsigiana Variegata Albo is a beautiful addition to any home, it's important to note that it is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation to the mouth, throat, and digestive system. Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets and children, and wear gloves when handling it to avoid skin irritation.

Monstera Borsigiana Variegata Albo is a remarkable plant that can bring a touch of exotic beauty to any indoor space. With its striking variegation and manageable care requirements, it is a rewarding plant for both experienced and novice plant enthusiasts. By providing the right conditions in terms of watering, light, temperature, soil, humidity, and fertilization, you can ensure that your mature mother plant continues to thrive and impress for years to come. Just remember to keep it out of reach from pets and children due to its toxicity, and you'll enjoy the unique beauty of this rare plant in your home.

It's How Wars End That Become Important Afterward
Format: Paperback
The twentiety century taught us a lot about wars and how they end. World War I showed us that making strong demands on the defeated (who didn't admit defeat to their own people) set the stage for the next big war. World War II was fought until the Unconditional Surrender of the Germans and Japanese. Something that thinkers still debate as having made them fight all that harder. VietNam was fought with no clear end in sight, and "another VietNam" entered our language. The first Gulf War was ended when Colin Powell and Bush II debated how to end the war. They stopped before they had to go in and see what the Sunni's, Shiite's and Kurds made of the power vacuum left by the removal of Saddam would have created. Bush II is learning about this now. This is the second revised edition of this book, originally published in 1971 and then updated in 1991 and now 2005 to reflect happenings in new wars. Still some of the old wars had interesting insights that I didn't know before, such as how Finland, originally on Germany's side against Russia, made a peace with Russia and kicked the Germans out before they became a Russian province. Great Book.

Complementary readings
Format: Paperback
There are already three good reviews so I will only suggest reading the following books instead of, or in addition to, this peculiar work: a) "War in human civilization" by Azar Gat; b) "War before Civilization. The Myth of the Peaceful Savage", by Lawrence Keeley; c) "How War Began" by Keith F. Otterbein; d) "War and Peace and War: The Rise and Fall of Empires" by Peter Turchin; and e) "War and the Law of Nations: A General History" by Stephen Neff.

Excellent short-book analysis
Format: Paperback
This short book is an outstanding analysis of how nations end wars, or accept peace. Ikle shows how governments often prefer obviously self-destructive courses rather then compromise peace terms. The problem is most acute when factional interests dominate strategy rather then a rational unitary interest. In such a circumstance, factions that benefit from continuing the war will accuse those pursuing peace of treason. Sadly, there is no equivalent derogatory word in English for those who pursue war to the detriment of their country. The book was first written in 1971, and most of the examples are from the two world wars. The work is still extremely relevant, and at 130 pages it's well worth the time. Highly recommended as a first book to read on ending war.
