Evening primrose seeds introduce a resilient, pollinator-attracting herb into your organic garden, perfect for sunny borders, dry meadows, or wildflower plantings. Oenothera biennis is a self-seeding biennial or overwintering annual native to Europe and North America, prized for its tall stature, soft yellow blossoms, and herbal uses.
Plants grow 3 to 4 feet tall and produce blooms that open in the evening and close by morning—making them a key food source for bees and night-pollinating insects. The edible flowers bring a mild, sweet taste and visual interest to salads, while the seeds are known for containing gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), valued in traditional herbalism for hormonal support and skin health.
Evening primrose thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Direct sow in fall or early spring by pressing seeds into the soil surface—do not cover, as light is required for germination. Water gently and maintain even moisture. Once established, thin or transplant seedlings 12 inches apart. Plants readily self-seed, returning each year without replanting.
This low-maintenance addition is ideal for pollinator gardens, drought-tolerant landscaping, and herbal medicine plots where its beauty and benefits can be appreciated season after season. Looking for more varieties? Browse our complete Seed Packs and Bulk Seeds Collection.
