Berry Heavy Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata 'Berry Heavy')

Berry Heavy Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata 'Berry Heavy') is a vigorous deciduous holly cultivar celebrated for its dense clusters of large, bright red berries that remain showy well into winter. A female selection of the native winterberry species, this plant offers unmatched seasonal interest, making it an exceptional focal point in the landscape during the colder months.

Distinctive Features

'Berry Heavy' lives up to its name with an abundant fruit set that covers the branches from late fall through winter. The bold red berries stand out against bare stems, adding color and structure when most plants are dormant. Its upright, rounded habit reaches 6 to 8 feet tall and wide, making it suitable for both naturalistic and formal settings.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: Moist, acidic soil; tolerant of clay and wet conditions
  • Water: Moderate to high; prefers consistently moist environments
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Outstanding berry display draws the eye in winter gardens
  • Naturalized Areas: Blends well with native plantings and wetland edges
  • Screening: Dense form makes an effective seasonal privacy barrier
  • Rain Gardens: Thrives in moisture-retentive sites and low-lying areas
  • Cut Branches: Popular for use in festive arrangements and winter decor

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist; mulch helps conserve moisture
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning; shape in late winter if needed
  • Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support growth
  • Mulching: Maintain mulch to suppress weeds and insulate roots
  • Pollination: Requires a nearby male, such as Ilex verticillata 'Mr. Poppins', for fruit set

Why Choose Berry Heavy Winterberry Holly?

  • Massive Berry Display: One of the fullest-fruiting winterberry cultivars available
  • Seasonal Appeal: Bright berries shine against winter landscapes
  • Wildlife Habitat: Provides valuable food for birds in cold months
  • Native Heritage: A North American species adapted to varied conditions
  • Focal Point: Adds striking winter color and structure to any planting scheme

Ilex verticillata 'Berry Heavy' delivers reliable winter brilliance and native resilience, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking bold seasonal interest and ecological value.

Won't go through "hurricane" or chain-link fencing - dogs LOVE it.
Color: Orange, Size: Large
We've been using this size (large) for about 2 years now. Between our Doberman pinscher and the boxer-pitbull mix, they are tough on toys. These dogs have access to the Chuckit Ultra balls only under supervision and they run like crazy in the backyard while either fetching or holding onto the balls. It keeps our doberman out of trouble because she's running with a ball in her mouth and therefor cannot nip at the other dog when she gets overly excited. Tennis balls are lucky to last one play session with these guys, just for comparison purposes. When throwing the regular size, the ball occasionally went right through our backyard (chain link aka "hurricane") fence -- even though they shouldn't quite fit. The size large balls bounce off the fence; our only problem now is when one of the dogs does a soccer style head-butt and knocks the ball over the fence that way. After 2 years, one ball has a split down the side and two are discolored because they were left outside when we couldn't locate them after a play session. Overall I like these very much and appreciate how well they've held up.

My dog and I love this!
Color: Orange, Size: Large
The balls are larger and fit the Chuck It with the larger ball size perfectly. The balls are hard rubber material and have stood up to continued chewing after our dog picks them up. They bounce and are really hard wearing. Great product for the price!

Durable but don't give this to them as an everyday chew toy.
Color: Orange, Size: Large
My Catahoula loves these things. Great for a training aid and to let them get their zoomies out but not durable enough for an idle chew toy.

Great for dogs that love cat toys
Size: Small - 2 Count (Pack of 1)
I have a 45# dog who loves to play with cat toys. She's a strange one, but it's what she likes. She also loves ChuckIt balls (glow in the dark, squeaker, rubber, etc.). We bought 2 2-packs and we're glad we did. These are about the side of ping pong balls or golf balls. Yes, if your dog's an aggressive chewer or smaller than a teacup these will probably not last long. Yes, my weirdo dog almost immediately picked all the "fuzz" off the ball because that's what she does. The quality and durability of the ball haven't been affected, it's just a bald little ball. Highly recommend for any non-aggressive chewers that LOVE cat-sized toys.
