Variegated Portulacaria or Elephant Bush 'Variegata' (Portulacaria afra 'Variegata')

This extremely charming, delicate, and resilient Variegated Portulacaria, most commonly known worldwide as the "Elephant Bush," is one of the most rewarding succulents! The 'Variegata' variety is especially decorative – it stands out with contrasting reddish-brown or purplish-red stems and small, fleshy leaves adorned with a beautiful cream-white and light green variegation. Visually, this plant closely resembles the classic "money tree" (crassula), but it is more delicate, faster-growing, and – most importantly – completely safe for pets! It is a very dynamic, sun-loving, and drought-tolerant houseplant that will add a bright, aesthetically clean, and slightly exotic natural accent to any interior. It is an ideal, joy-inducing, and very easy-to-care-for gift for both experienced succulent collectors and anyone wanting to try their hand at shaping their first bonsai tree!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: Maximum bright light and direct sunlight! This is the main secret to this plant’s beauty: to maintain its variegated leaf coloring and reddish stems, it requires a large amount of light. A south or southwest-facing windowsill is an absolutely ideal choice. In too dark a place, the leaves will turn completely green, the shoots will stretch out, and the plant may start to drop leaves.

  • 💧 Watering: Rare and very careful. As a succulent, portulacaria stores water in its fleshy leaves and stems. Allow the soil to dry out completely and deeply between watering! It absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause root rot and plant death. Reduce watering to an absolute minimum during the winter months.

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives at standard room temperature and literally loves normal, very dry indoor air (this plant must never be misted!). In warm summer months, it is highly recommended to take it outside to fresh air on a sunny terrace or balcony. Protect from icy drafts in winter.

  • 🐾 Pets: Friendly. Unlike the popular "money tree" (crassula), with which this plant is often confused, portulacaria is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs!

🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

  • The sunniest south-facing windowsill (an absolute prerequisite for a magnificent, compact, and colorful plant).

  • A bright and sunny balcony or terrace in summer (where the plant will settle in well and grow rapidly).

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height: 20 cm

  • Pot diameter: 10.5 cm

⚠️ Note: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its crown shape may vary. It is important to know nature’s secrets: portulacarias are extremely "plastic" – they respond wonderfully to pruning! If the branches grow too long or you want to create a fuller, tree-like crown (in bonsai style), do not hesitate to boldly prune or pinch off the new shoot tips! Pruning will stimulate branching. If the plant suddenly starts dropping green leaves massively, it is a stress indicator – most often this signals overwatering or a sharp lack of light. When repotting, be sure to use an extremely light and loose cactus and succulent soil mix (with a generous amount of sand, perlite, or pumice) that provides excellent drainage.

Great product for sensitive skin
Style: Tolerance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream
I have sensitive skin that is constantly getting irritated by moisturizers/seemingly simple skin care products. I read a few blogs/articles/reviews on different products others have tried for similar issues and this one came up, so I decided to give it a try. It’s nice and light and goes on smoothly. Skin feels moisturized and does not get irritated, so that’s a win! The only reason I took off 1 star is it leaves my skin a bit oily for my liking, but that could just be my skin.

Holy Grail Moisturizer for Rosacea
Style: Restorative Protective Cream-3.3 Fl Oz
In seeing so many negative reviews I felt compelled to weigh in as this is my favorite moisturizer. I have very dry, menopausal skin. Additionally, I have rosacea which seems to have been a nice gift from said menopause (you can only laugh, right?). It's very common for those of us in our 50's to have a compromised skin barrier and when an issue like rosacea is present, even more so. Because of all this my skin is very intolerant to most moisturizers and nearly all actives (over the last few years I've had to discontinue my retinols and chemical exfoliators). While ingredients like ALA's, petrolatum, mineral oil, parafin/bees wax, and lanolin are well tolerated and known to be quite soothing, they don't hydrate very well as they are more occlusive than moisturizing. Enter this product. Magically, it does both! It's marketed as a protective cream, which again implies occlusive, but it penetrates like no other. Gone is the tight, dry feeling that persisted even when I had a heavy layer of product on my skin (my previous moisturizer was Eucerin Original Healing Cream -- which still has its uses -- because it was the only thing I could put on my skin outside of squalane oil during a flare). Now, no topical can cure rosacea. However, the right product can calm the skin, repair the damaged lipid barrier, and improve its appearance. This moisturizer does just that and it's become my holy grail. Since starting this I've also added in the Cicalfate Serum which has only aided in repairing my skin. Another Avene product that works great for me is the XeraCalm Balm which helps with itching. I use all three of these daily and they've really helped fix the secondary issues that come with rosacea. As for the complaints about it being greasy or too heavy. I can see this not working for people with normal or oily skin (or perhaps only in moderation). But my skin loves the heavier weight and because one of the ways I soothe a flare is to keep a tiny mister bottle on hand and repeatedly spray my face so I have to guard against the drying effects of evaporation. These products are so lipid heavy that I can wet my face all day long without worrying about that, though I do reapply throughout the day. As for the watery consistency issue, I haven't had that problem but it does caution on the packaging not to expose the product to temperatures below 41 degrees F (5 C). I suspect that if it gets too cold either because of the weather or because of whatever warehouse it sat in during transit it will separate. Maybe open the package and before squeezing some out look to see if it has split and then shake it up/message the tube. So, if you have skin like mine don't hesitate to try this product. I'm leaving this absurdly long review for my struggling brothers and sisters out there with rosacea in hopes that it provides some relief! Happy moisturizing, internet strangers. ;)
