Coastal strength. Bonsai soul. A pine unlike any other.

Pinus thunbergii, the Japanese Black Pine, is the most important pine in Japanese culture and one of the most striking conifers available to western growers. Its dense, dark needles, dramatically textured bark, and naturally irregular growth habit make it the defining pine of Japanese gardens, coastal landscapes, and bonsai collections worldwide. Hardy, adaptable, and highly tolerant of salt spray and wind, it has proven itself in the most exposed coastal conditions imaginable. Seed-grown specimens develop the natural character and variation that grafted nursery trees rarely achieve. If you are looking to buy Japanese Black Pine seeds or grow this pine from seed, you are beginning a relationship with a tree that rewards patience and attention over decades.

  • Dramatic dark needles and irregular growth habit prized in Japanese garden design for centuries
  • Exceptionally salt-tolerant, one of the best conifers for coastal planting and seaside windbreaks
  • The most widely used pine species in traditional bonsai cultivation worldwide
  • Naturally develops rugged, textured bark with character that takes decades to achieve in other species
  • Adaptable to poor, sandy, or rocky soils and highly exposed sites

Things you probably did not know about the Japanese Black Pine

It is the pine that defines the Japanese coastline.
Groves of Japanese Black Pine planted along the Japanese coast over centuries serve as windbreaks protecting villages and rice fields from typhoon winds and salt spray. The silhouette of windswept Black Pines against a gray sea is one of the most recognized images in Japanese art and landscape painting.

Bonsai masters spend entire careers on a single tree.
Japanese Black Pine bonsai require specific summer and winter care techniques that have been refined and passed down through generations of practitioners. A well-developed Black Pine bonsai represents hundreds of hours of accumulated skill and is among the most respected art forms in Japanese culture. Some specimens in major collections are over 200 years old.

It hybridizes naturally with other pines.
Japanese Black Pine crosses readily with Japanese Red Pine to produce Pinus densiflora x thunbergii, a hybrid sometimes used in coastal plantings. Seed-grown specimens from wild-collected seeds occasionally show hybrid characteristics, adding to the natural variation that makes growing from seed rewarding.

The candles are a key feature in bonsai technique.
The new spring growth of Japanese Black Pine emerges as elongated buds called candles. Bonsai practitioners remove or cut these candles at precise times to control growth, ramification, and needle length. Mastering candle work is considered one of the foundational skills of pine bonsai.

Great for Indy Comic and Zine Covers
Size: 11"X17"
I use both the 11x17 and 8.5x11 Koala Glossy Inkjet papers as cover stock for Night Phoenix Press mini comics and zines, most often as Kickstarter add-ons or promo items. For that role, they deliver. The gloss finish immediately gives even short-run projects a polished, professional look with the other side having a matte finish which I can flip over for sketch covers using the matte side for the exterior cover. Colors print vibrant, blacks are strong, and the surface takes ink evenly without streaking. The finish looks clean enough to pass for offset printing on both inkjet and laser printers. This paper is also great for comic covers because it can fold down the middle without splitting the gloss coating too much if at all. The 8.5x11.5 works just as well for minis, one-shot zines or inserts. Between the two sizes, I can cover nearly every indie project format I need. They have just enough weight to feel like a true cover while still running smoothly through an inkjet printer. These books are often handled by backers or used as handouts, so durability matters. The stock holds up, though glossy paper can pick up fingerprints or light scuffs if stacked loosely. Bagging finished copies or boxing them quickly solves that. For the cost, it’s a dependable option that makes Kickstarter rewards and promo zines look far more professional than plain paper covers. For creators producing indie comics, add-ons, or zines on a budget, this paper is one of the easiest ways to elevate presentation without driving up printing costs. -Nathyn Brendan Masters

Ausurion products protection
Asurion is a great company to insure your products whenever you purchase items from online businesses like, Amazon. I had a portable hot spot device ordering from Amazon with a 3-year protection plan, unfortunately, the device has accidentally fallen and refused to turn on, then I went on Asurion Online website and filled in a claim and waited for approval to take that device for repair, luckily, they do not haven’t repaired shop services near me, they just refunded the original item price to me by Amazon Gift cards without knowing it few days than expected. I highly recommend Asurion for your product insurance needs.

Assuring takes care of their customers.
Asurion was the best purchase you can have when buying electronics. We purchased a HP printer, which we have always had excellent luck with, but this one was a lemon from the beginning. We called Asurion and they immediately took care of the problem. Thank you.

SAVE YOUR MONEY - Protection Plan was money wasted
This 'Protection Plan' proved worthless for me. I purchased it for 3yrs. When I first ordered the HP 7301 All-in-one printer, I never got the first one to work. After HOURS of debugging and online support from HP it was determined that the printer was defective and needed to be replaced (FIRST printer never did setup or work AT ALL). Recently that printer failed again after about 13 months but well within the Asurion 3yr coverage. I then spend MANY HOURS over three days before being told once again by HP that the printer needed replacement and that they WOULD replace it. After many more hours escalating to a supervisor, since I had no means to package up and return the printer myself, that they would send a replacement in advance and allow me to send the defective back in the new printer's box. I had been without printing at this point for SEVEN DAYS. After I waited TWO MORE DAYS for them to 'check inventory' for the same model, I got a call from HP informing me that I was not going to get a new printer because: I HAD ALREADY HAD ONE REPLACEMENT and that was ALL I WAS ENTITLED TO. Of course this was the original printer to replace the brand new one that was DOA on its initial delivery. I lost all count of the massive number of hours I had invested to this point before HP RENEGGED on their commitment made to me more than twice. The current status is that I have a totally useless printer, had to buy a new printer, and have been stiffed for the cost of the HP printer AND the so-called Asurion 'Protection Plan'. In my opinion, Asurion put me through every possible hurdle to deny coverage under the plan, then after agreeing multiple times to send me a replacement (I have all the chat transcripts), they RENEGGED on coverage, which I believe was their intent from the outset. The notion that I had ALREADY received a replacement and was therefor ineligible for another is ABSURD on its face. The original replacement was needed to resolve a brand new DEAD ON ARRIVAL printer!!!
