Cape Sundew

Drosera capensis, commonly known as the Cape Sundew, is one of the easiest and most rewarding carnivorous plants to grow. Native to the Cape region of South Africa, it features long, slender leaves that unfurl dramatically and are covered in glistening, sticky "dew"—glandular hairs that trap and digest small insects like gnats and fruit flies.

With its elegant, arching leaves and constant insect-catching sparkle, D. capensis is as functional as it is beautiful. Even better, it often blooms freely in cultivation, sending up tall flower stalks with delicate, pink to lavender blossoms.

Care Guide

  • Light: Thrives in bright, direct light—ideally 4+ hours per day. Can also do well under strong grow lights.

  • Water: Use only distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water. Keep soil consistently moist; a shallow tray of water beneath the pot works well.

  • Humidity: Adapts to average household humidity but appreciates a boost in drier environments.

  • Temperature: Prefers 65–85°F. Can tolerate cooler temps down to 40°F, but not frost.

  • Soil: Use a nutrient-free mix of sphagnum peat and perlite or sand (1:1). Never fertilize.

  • Feeding: Will happily catch its own prey. If indoors and pest-free, feed with dried bloodworms or crushed betta pellets monthly.

Drosera capensis blooms prolifically in bright conditions, often sending up flower stalks from spring through fall. Each stalk carries multiple blooms that open sequentially—delicate, five-petaled flowers in soft pink or lilac. While beautiful, you can snip them off to conserve the plant's energy if desired.

This is the perfect “gateway” carnivorous plant: forgiving, endlessly fascinating, and surprisingly pretty. It’s ideal for bright kitchens, sunny windowsills, or anywhere those pesky gnats like to hang out. A true workhorse with a touch of magic.

What Do I Do When My DIL Wants to Cut Me Out of Her Life Along with My Granddaughter?
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Answer to my question in my Review Title: I pray and God provided me this book! I just finished reading it, and I just couldn't wait to write this review! I highly recommending reading this book, if you are having any problems with your adult children, especially chapters 9-11. For me, like the title says, I didn't know what to do when my DIL said, "... I will be stepping back from contact for the foreseeable future. This includes cards, letters, gifts, or other communication unless I say otherwise." Since receiving that text message in December 2025, I have been praying about what to do. Just last week, my son texted me some very angry text messages, even demanding that I delete all virtual pictures of my granddaughter and giving him all my physical pictures of her (which I will do because of Matthew 5:38-42)! What amazing timing though to be reading this book! Praise God! My son has not closed the door yet on our relationship, so I have hope that I can implement some of the ideas in this book! See photo to see my notes (i.e. questions) that I wrote from the book that I could possibly ask him, if he is willing to meet with me. I pray that he does. Thank you SO much, Dr. Kathy, for writing this book! God is using you and your ministry. God bless you.

Timeless Wisdom with Real Action Steps
Format: Paperback
I was blessed to read this book prelease and am delighted to share that this book is a must read for all parents with adult children. Dr. Kathy provides very helpful insight in first understanding the foundations of the relationship based on the core needs of the parent and the child. Her explanations are very convicting but I don't feel condemned for previous shortcomings; rather I feel inspired to improve and apologize. I particularly appreciate the realistic action steps and examples of actual words to think/speak in the first person so I can retrain myself to think, speak, and relate to my children. Dr. Kathy equips readers by providing step by step explanations of 1) What to do; 2) Why it works and; 3) How to do it . It is brilliant and so helpful. However, she does not provide false hope because sometimes love is not enough in the case of prodigals and she shares Truth with parents and acknowledges the the very real pain and loneliness that can result then follows-up with real action steps and reminds us of our hope in Christ. As always, the wisdom in the book is timeless and can be applied across multiple relationships in life including my relationship with my own parents where I am the child and even in communicating with my husband. I am grateful for the Celebrate Kids ministry and Dr. Kathy. I am constantly learning something new and am grateful.

Real action steps. You will love this book!
Format: Paperback
If you have adult children, I promise you will be blessed by this book. So many times books have good insight, but then when life happens, it is easy to forget the wisdom of the book. This book is different. It has real actionable steps that you can take to help parents let go of their children. As we raise little people, it’s easy to wrap your identity up in your family life. This book helped me see where I was still finding identity in my kids and how to make sure that we are finding our identity and healthier ways. She includes a Declaration of Release in the book. Reading it brought tears to my eyes. It made me realize it’s OK to grieve the young family we once had but also to embrace my growing and maturing adult children. I want to have a healthy relationship with my kids and their spouses and I’m confident this book is like a very wise friend offering advice and walking this path with me. I was blessed to read a free copy of the ebook but I’ve already purchased my own paper copy of the book so I can make notes and refer back to it more easily.

A little too strong on religion and preachy, which I could have done without.
