The totem pole cactus, also known as Pachycereus schottii monstrosus, is a strikingly beautiful plant. Native to North America, this slow-growing cactus is also known as Lophocereus schottii var. monstrous, or monstrous whisker cactus. It got its common name from its textured stems, which look like totem poles with many faces.

The totem pole cactus grows slowly and is distinguished by its tall, columnar growth habit and bumpy, spineless skin. Indoors, it can grow to 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide. When grown outdoors, this columnar cactus can grow up to 20 feet tall.

Over time, this cactus develops several upright arms. When a stem falls over in the wild, it roots along its side.

This cactus can be used as a focal point in cactus gardens, as well as in attractive containers or raised beds alongside other cactus and succulent plants.

It can also be accented around pools or ponds or used as a xeriscape plant in combination with other desert plants. To create a vertical or architectural effect, place it against a tall wall.

The totem pole cactus blooms at night, producing light pink blossoms in late spring that open at dusk and close by mid-morning. It also produces an edible egg-shaped red fruit with red pulp.

The spines on these towering totem pole cacti are shorter than other Arizona giants, such as the saguaroGo to saguaro or organ pipe, allowing its bright yellowish green stem to be prominently visible.

When and How to Water Your Totem Pole Cactus

The Totem Pole cacti prefer infrequent watering to mimic their natural habitat. They prefer to be watered using the "soak and dry" technique. This involves thoroughly watering the plant before allowing it to completely dry out between watering sessions.

The Pachycereus schottii monstrosus should be watered every 3-4 weeks, during the growing season, with minimal watering once a month during the dormant season.

During the active growing season, provide enough to your Totem Pole cactus to ensure the soil is evenly moist but never soggy. Always allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings, and make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.

During the dormant season, the totem pole cactus requires minimal watering, as the cactus's growth slows down. Keep an eye on your cactus to gauge its watering needs. If the cactus starts to show signs of wrinkling or softness, it may be a sign of underwatering.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Totem Pole Cactus

When growing indoors, the totem pole cacti thrive in bright, indirect light. Place your cactus near a sunny window where it can receive plenty of natural light.

However, be cautious of direct sunlight, especially during the intense afternoon hours, as it can scorch the cactus.

If your indoor space lacks natural light, you can supplement with a grow light to ensure your Totem Pole cactus gets the light it needs to stay healthy and vibrant.

When growing outdoors, you can move it to a place with ample sunlight.

These cacti enjoy full sun exposure, so choose a spot in your garden or patio that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

Ensure that the outdoor location has well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging, which can harm columnar stems of your cactus. New plants can get burned in the full sun, so gradually increase their exposure to direct sunlight. If the sun is too bright, consider purchasing a sunshade or moving the plant indoors to a more shaded location.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The totem pole cactus prefers sandy, well-drained soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized cactus potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your cactus plants thrive. You can create your own potting mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

A balanced, low-strength fertilizer works best for your totem pole cactus plant, ideally with an NPK ratio around 5-10-5 where phosphorus is slightly higher than nitrogen to support healthy growth. Apply it during the growing season in spring and summer, about once a year, and always dilute it to half strength to avoid overfeeding.

During winter dormancy, reduce or stop fertilizing your Totem Pole Cactus as it can result in weak, stretched, or easily damaged plants.

Hardiness Zones More

In the United States, this Selenicereus grandiflorus is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 9-11.

These cacti can tolerate temperatures as low as 20°F but prefer temperatures above 50°F for optimal growth.

In terms of humidity, these cacti prefer low to moderate humidity levels, making them well-suited for indoor environments with average humidity levels. Providing good air circulation around the plant can help prevent any humidity-related issues.

How to Grow as a Houseplant

When you are growing your Pachycereus schottii monstrosus indoors, it prefers a warm climate in temperatures between 60°F and 75°F. Keep it away from cold drafts, or sudden temperature changes, as these can stress the plant and slow its growth.

If your space doesn’t get much natural light, you can use a grow light to help your Totem Pole cactus stay healthy and keep its color looking good. Make sure to water only when the soil is completely dry so you can avoid root rot.

Wildlife -  Totem Pole Cactus Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

Totem Pole Cactus 'Pachycereus schottii 'monstrosus' can attract friendly pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects. These pollinators play a crucial role in the ecosystem by aiding in the reproduction of plants and ensuring biodiversity.

According to ASPCA, the Pachycereus schottii monstrosus is not considered toxic to humans or pets. However, it's always a good idea to practice caution and keep plants out of reach of curious pets or small children.

How to Propagate Your Totem Pole Cactus Plant

To propagate your Totem Pole Cactus, it can be done through stem cuttings or divisions. Cut a piece of the cactus stem (ensure it's a healthy, mature stem) and let the cut end callus over for a few days.

Then, plant the cutting in a well-draining soil mix and keep it slightly moist until roots develop. Another method is by division, where you carefully separate offsets or pups from the main plant and replant them. With patience, roots will begin to develop in about 2 to 3 months.

Key Takeaways

  1. The Totem Pole Cactus is a unique sculptural houseplant known for its smooth, spineless, and bumpy columnar stems that resemble totem poles with many faces.
  2. Unlike most cacti, this variety is completely spineless, making it safe and easy to handle while still offering a bold desert look indoors or outdoors.
  3. It is a slow-growing, long-lived cactus that gradually forms tall, upright columns, creating a striking visual statement over time.
  4. As a highly drought-tolerant cactus, it stores water in its thick stems, making it an extremely low-maintenance plant ideal for beginners and busy plant owners.
  5. This unusual cactus is a monstrose form, meaning its irregular, knobby growth pattern is a natural mutation that gives every plant a one-of-a-kind appearance.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Totem Pole cactus is a fascinating plant known for its unique appearance and low maintenance requirements. With its tall, columnar shape and lack of traditional spines, it adds a modern and sculptural element to any space. To care for your Totem Pole cactus, ensure it is planted in well-draining soil, receives plenty of sunlight, and is watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering and extreme temperature fluctuations to keep this cactus thriving and looking its best.

This is the new formula, with a blue cap
Size: 1.3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This cream has been a great basic moisturizer for use with acne creams (.25% tretinoin, in my case). You may notice some reviewers saying it's fake because of the blue cap and the fact that it just says "soothing," but that's the new packaging. You can see that on the Avene website. This doesn't have the "luxe" feel of some other brands, but this did the job by keeping my skin moisturized and acne free. When I am in the mood to buy something else, I usually buy something else, but this is the best budget option - definitely better than any of the drugstore brands.

Obsessed. Soothing, effective, fragrance-free, incredibly healing
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I’ve been loving this so much I bought a second bottle after a few days of using it. It has all the skin soothing benefits of the tolerance lotion cleanser, but it’s also a really great cleanser. It’s almost not noticeable how good it is at cleansing because your skin doesn’t feel stripped after, but it takes things off really quickly. I was worried because it doesn’t foam a lot and it feels so nurturing — much like the tolerance lotion cleanser (which I use as a second cleanse when my skin needs a few days to recover from something like a derm office treatment) — but when I wash again with my favorite HG cleanser nothing extra comes off, and I tested it twice on waterproof eyeliner that I’d swiped on my forearm for an hour or so, the eyeliner dissolved and wiped off with two or three gentle swipes. It has a very emollient texture, so when you rub it against your skin it slips so easily you don’t realize it’s dissolving and taking things away because there is no friction. So it’s great at taking off makeup, it’s AMAZING at cleaning makeup brushes, and IT DOES NOT BURN MY EYES AT ALL. Also, it is FRAGRANCE-FREE… before I bought it I read a review complaining about smelling a citrus fragrance, that person either has some sort of brain tumor or something spilled on their bottle when it was in a warehouse because this is definitely a fragrance-free product. Prior to trying this, I had tried another cleanser that gave me weird acne hives all over my chest (never happened to me before) and I was struggling to heal the acne and the irritation. I noticed an immediate difference when I started using the tolerance cleanser on it; the fresh redness went away, the acne started healing, and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been healing fast. So I’ve been using this on my body as well and it’s soothing and moisturizing in all the places where other things have been drying. I have mild rosacea and I hadn’t realized how irritated my skin was from the last thing I’d tried until after 5 days or so of using this my skin tone looked much more even and the stubborn PIH I have from a two-zit hormonal breakout a month ago finally looked dramatically lighter (as recently as the week before, I’d needed to cover them with high-coverage concealer). Because this doesn’t foam much, some people might not realize how well it’s cleaning… I encourage you to judge it based on how your skin looks and feels. Since it is very emollient though, I do think it’s important to use it with a face wash scrubber or washcloth just to ensure you’re getting some mild mechanical exfoliation and clearing away skin cells that could be trapping stuff in your pores. For this reason, I do wash my face with this twice so the first wash can get off makeup/debris/oil and then the second wash can really penetrate and clean my skin.

No Scent and Gentle
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I broke out in a case of Perioral Dermatitis recently and bought this product to help before I could see my doctor. Avene Tolerance facial cleanser has no scent and is very gentle on my skin. It didn’t burn when washing with this product, and even helped to slough off the dead skin around my lips. My face feels clean, not dry. I am still going to see my doc to get an RX for the inflammation, but I do believe this product helped to alleviate the dryness and tightness of my skin and lips. I’ve used other Avene products and I’m very happy with them. Even though these products are more expensive, to me they are well worth the money because they are much more gentle on the skin than any other products I’ve used. I will buy this product again just because of the fact that it’s so gentle. PS: at the time of purchase for this product, I also bought Avene’s Tolerance Control Skin Recovery Cream (you don’t need to use a lot of this one on your entire face), and Avene’s Cicalfate for lips. Between these 3 products, my lips and skin feel a lot better (however, I will still see my doctor because I have Crohn’s Disease and Perioral Dermatitis is considered an extra-intestinal side effect of Crohn’s).

Gentle everyday cleanser!
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
My go to nightly cleanser! Gentle yet effective. Removes makeup without leaving any residue behind. Also does not dry out my skin or cause breakouts! I would say it’s more of a cream cleanser though. It does not really foam up. It’s a decent size bottle for the price. The pump dispenser is an added plus!
