Some plants feel almost magical, and Blue Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea) is one of them. This fast-growing heirloom vine produces dazzling indigo-blue blossoms that not only turn heads in the garden but also transform into a natural super-ingredient in the kitchen. Herbalists, chefs, and home gardeners alike treasure this plant for its ornamental beauty, edible flowers, and centuries-old role in traditional teas and dyes. Whether you’re after a stunning trellis climber or a unique homegrown ingredient, Butterfly Pea delivers.

When I first grew Butterfly Pea, the blooms felt unreal, vivid sapphire petals glowing against lush green vines. Picking a handful for tea and watching the water turn a deep, royal blue was a thrill I’ll never forget. Add a squeeze of lemon, and the brew shifts into a brilliant violet, like magic in a cup.

🌿 Why Grow Blue Butterfly Pea?

  • Striking flowers: Deep cobalt-blue blooms, up to 2 inches wide.

  • Edible & versatile: Perfect for teas, cocktails, rice coloring, and desserts.

  • Medicinal heritage: Used in Ayurvedic and Southeast Asian traditions as a calming, antioxidant-rich herb.

  • Natural dye: Provides safe, plant-based color for foods and crafts.

  • Hardy vine: Climbs fences, trellises, or arches with ease.

  • Pollinator-friendly 🐝🦋: Attracts bees and butterflies to your garden.

  • Heirloom, open-pollinated: Grow, save, and share your own seeds.

📜 History & Uniqueness:
Native to Southeast Asia, Butterfly Pea has been cultivated for centuries both as an ornamental and as a staple in traditional medicine and cuisine. In Thailand and Vietnam, the flowers are steeped for teas and used to tint rice and desserts. Its role in Ayurveda connects it to memory, mood, and vitality. Unlike many edible flowers, it brings both beauty and function, making it a bridge between cultural heritage and modern herbal wellness.

☀️ How to Grow Blue Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea):

  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil enriched with compost.

  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering (6–8 hours daily).

  • Sowing: Soak seeds in warm water overnight to speed germination. Direct sow after frost or start indoors 6–8 weeks before transplanting.

  • Spacing: 12–18 inches apart; give vines room to climb.

  • Support: Provide a trellis, arch, or fence for vertical growth.

  • Watering: Moderate; prefers consistent moisture but tolerates short dry spells.

  • Season: Thrives in warm weather (zones 9–11 perennial; grown as an annual elsewhere).

  • Care tip: Regular picking of flowers encourages even more blooms.

🌸 Garden & Home Uses:

  • Vertical gardening: Perfect for trellises, fences, and arches with its fast-climbing habit.

  • Edible blooms: Use fresh or dried for teas, cocktails, or natural food coloring.

  • Medicinal infusions: Traditional calming tea, rich in antioxidants and anthocyanins.

  • Natural dye: Safe for rice, baked goods, or craft projects.

  • Pollinator habitat: Attracts bees and butterflies, supporting your ecosystem.

🍹 Kitchen Magic:
Steep the blooms to create a rich blue herbal tea. Add lemon or lime juice, and watch it change to vibrant purple. Use it in cocktails, lemonade, or mocktails for a natural color-changing drink. Dried petals can also be powdered for baking or mixed into smoothies for a nutrient-rich boost.

🌟 Why You’ll Love It:
Growing Blue Butterfly Pea seeds isn’t just gardening, it’s an experience. From the first blossoms twining up your trellis to the moment you steep your own homegrown tea, it connects you to nature’s artistry and tradition. With beauty, utility, and a dash of magic, it’s one of the most rewarding plants you can grow.

Disappointed
Color: S6-muti-color
These were great for about 20 minutes then they stopped squeaking...we have 2 left that I have saved but the other 4 do not squeak anymore...disappointed as my dog loves to squeak things...would not buy these again...My dog is only an 8lb dog too...but he can still play with the balls without the squeak...

Great Value for a ball my dog loves!
Color: S6-muti-color
I wish these ball were in the subscription program! My dog gets sooo excited by the new ball, but her interest in things lasts for a few days. She kills the squeak within 11minutes, but the squeaker stays in place rather than becoming a chocking or swallow hazard, and she still loves to chew it. Next, we must throw the ball approximately 723 times the first day, possibly 496 times on day 2, and just 3- 4 on day 3, at which point she will chase the ball before hollering "it's over here if you need it," while she checks on the chipmunk den. We currently have 17 of these balls in our yard (because we have given several leftovers to a less discriminating doodle next door). These balls hold up really well, get her extremely active for the first couple of days, and are a much cheaper than doggie daycare (after an active morning with a new ball, she is happy to chew on it and sleep much of the day). I always have these on hand!

Pieces chewed off
Color: white & green
My Aussiedoodle loves it. I throw it down the hallway, it bounces crazy, and he chases it. The only complaint is that he can't chew much of the ball part. So now I have to have it put away and brought out for special playtime.

Finally, a toy my dog hasn’t murdered
If your dog destroys toys like it’s their full-time job, this stick is the boss-level challenge they didn’t see coming. I gave it to my power-chewer (a pit mix with jaws of steel), and after a week of gnawing, tossing, and dramatic tug-of-war battles, it’s still intact. Not even a dent. I think it might be made of space-grade rubber or the same stuff they use in black boxes. It’s got a good weight to it — heavy enough to feel solid, light enough to toss without pulling a shoulder. No squeaker, no fluff, no sad stuffing guts all over the living room. Just pure chewable glory. Pros: • Actually indestructible (or close enough) • Great for aggressive chewers • No squeaker = peace and quiet • Easy to clean and doesn’t smell weird • Doubles as a fetch toy and chew stick Minor feedback: It’s a bit heavy for small dogs, and it doesn’t bounce or squeak — but if your dog’s into serious chewing, they won’t care. Also, don’t drop it on your foot. Trust me. Final thoughts: This toy is the Chuck Norris of dog sticks. If your pup has shredded everything else, give this a shot. It might just survive — and so might your sanity.

Durable
If you have an aggressive chewer this will hold up for about a month. After about a month of daily use my police k9 will get the ends off. Is it completely indestructible no, does it hold up better then any other toy he’s had absolutely. When you have a dog with super high toy drive you understand nothing is indestructible but I will say a month for a toy to last with my dog is great and I accept the fact I just have to buy new toys monthly. For reference my dog will destroy a Kong in about half the time.
