Dracaena surculosa 'Florida Beauty' – Gold Dust Dracaena with Spotted Leaves

Dracaena surculosa var. surculosa 'Florida Beauty', also commonly known as Dracaena 'Gold Dust', is a slow-growing, evergreen cultivar prized for its striking spotted foliage. Upright, slender stems carry leaves that unfurl from tight cones into glossy dark green blades sprinkled with hundreds of irregular cream to yellow spots, giving the plant its “gold dust” effect. This unusual variegation makes it stand out among other indoor Dracaena varieties, offering a refined yet playful accent for plant displays.

Key Features of Dracaena 'Florida Beauty'

  • Foliage: Dark green leaves densely speckled with cream or yellow spots.
  • Growth Habit: Slender, upright stems with new leaves emerging as rolled cones.
  • Size: Typically reaches 60 – 90 cm indoors, taller in ideal conditions.
  • Collector Value: Rare among Dracaena for its bold spotted pattern.

Natural Background

The parent species, Dracaena surculosa (syn. Dracaena godseffiana), is native to tropical West Africa, where it grows as an understory shrub in shaded, humid environments. The cultivar 'Florida Beauty' was selected for its distinctive foliage variegation and has become a popular ornamental worldwide.

Caring for Dracaena 'Florida Beauty'

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; too much sun can scorch the spotted leaves.
  • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist but not soggy; allow the top layer to dry between waterings.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter.
  • Temperature: Warm-growing; ideal range is 18 – 27 °C, avoid drafts and cold air.
  • Humidity: Appreciates higher humidity; growth slows in very dry air.
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

Potential Challenges

  • Leaf Drop: Caused by prolonged drought or sudden temperature swings.
  • Faded Spots: Low light reduces the intensity of variegation.
  • Pest Susceptibility: Can attract spider mites or scale if stressed.
  • Toxicity: Like many Dracaena, it is toxic if ingested by pets.

Why Choose Dracaena 'Florida Beauty'

Unlike the more common striped Dracaena, Dracaena 'Florida Beauty' offers a unique dotted pattern that adds texture and visual interest. Its slow, upright growth and resilience make it a versatile houseplant for bright interiors, thriving in spots where a splash of unusual foliage is desired.

Etymology

The name Dracaena comes from the romanized Ancient Greek δράκαινα (drakaina), meaning “female dragon,” a reference to the red resin (“dragon’s blood”) produced by some species in the genus.

Helpful Idea for Puppies, Even Though Mine Were Not Interested
Pattern Name: Heartbeat Sheep Grey
This heartbeat puppy toy is a really thoughtful concept for helping puppies feel comforted during crate training and sleep, especially for very young puppies adjusting to a new environment. The heartbeat feature and soft plush design are clearly meant to create a calming effect and ease anxiety during transitions. The toy itself feels soft and well made, and I can absolutely see why many puppies respond well to it. In our case, my puppies personally were not very interested in it, but I honestly feel that was more about their individual personalities than the product itself. Because the concept is so good and many dogs may benefit from it, I still think it is worth trying, especially if introduced very early during puppy training and adjustment periods.

Did they add pheremones to this??
Pattern Name: Heartbeat Sheep Grey
So when my puppy first came home to me I bought this to try to help him keep calm through the night. He wasn't able to sleep through the night, but he did sleep more than I had expected. The next couple of nights he was able to sleep through the night completely (but liked to wake up at 5 am...). Fast forward to a month later, and I no longer turn the heart on all the time (because I forget). But I did buy a re-chargeable heart because having to keep buying batteries is a pet peeve for me. He still loves to sleep with it as it's another snuggle spot that helps keep him warm (short haired mini dachshund, so not much fur to keep himself warm) in the kennel. During the day though, he loves to drag this thing out of the kennel and "wrestle" with it. He shakes it a lot like all dogs like to do to "kill" it, and he's chewed the tail and nose worn. But the reason I say it has pheremones is that at 10 weeks old (which was younger than my last dogs' puberty age), he's humping it like there's no tomorrow. If I need to get his attention, or keep him out of a certain area, all I need to do is bring this out of kennel, and he's off humping the stuffing out of it. His brother (who belongs to my mother and is from the same litter), does the same thing. So now I have to wonder if they added some pheremones to it so that it's really "lovable". It was actually pretty hilarious because I was face-timing my mother showing her my dog with this anxiety toy, and he decided to perform his first humping act on air. So I'm not sure I can say it did it's main job to calm anxiety, but it did act as companion (in more ways than one) to my dog. My dog is almost 4 months old now and this toy is still going strong... well, the neck could use a sew, and the tail is on it's last leg, but he loves his girlfriend just the way she is.

Heartbeat stops working after a few seconds
Pattern Name: Heartbeat Sheep Grey
It's a really cute toy. The heart beats only for a few seconds then stops. I thought about exchanging it, but reading the reviews it looks like it is an issue with the mechanism itself. I found a pack of 2 replacement hearts from another company and so far it seems to be working.

Anxiety Relief for Elderly Dog
Pattern Name: Heartbeat Sheep Grey, Pattern Name: Heartbeat Sheep Grey
My son and daughter-in-law's 13 year old Chihuahua has been suffering from separation anxiety, and just general anxiety during the covid19 lockdown. While she's in dental school, he's been living with us full time, and she was living at school during the week and with us on weekends. But with campus closed down, there's full-time school anxiety from doggie Mom, and going to work in a plague anxiety from doggie Dad. And nobody has much time for poor stressed out doggie, who barks and whines and is generally unpleasant. The only thing that seems to calm him down is to hold him. All. Day. Long. None of us has time. I decided to see if what works for puppies might work for an old man dog too. Guess what, it does! I started by holding the dog and the lamb on my lap for an evening while watching TV. The next morning I put the lamb in a bed next to my computer while I worked, and he climbed into the bed himself. He never would have done that before! You can't see the lamb in the picture, it's tucked under the canopy. The heartbeat is very relaxing- you do hear it, but it's more like you feel it than hear it, really. I have to admit that the first night when I was holding him, the heartbeat put me to sleep too. When my daughter-in-law came down for lunch, she took dog and lamb back up with her, and he slept with the lamb all afternoon and let her study without interruption. I don't know how long the batteries will last, or how hard they will be to change, but so far this has been a real comfort to an anxious old man dog. ETA- I've ordered batteries (40 for $6.99), and I may order another lamb for upstairs so we don't have to remember whether it's on Mom & Dad's or Grandma's floor. He's a much happier dog.
