More about the Berkey Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition Filter Elements

  • The Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition Filters are not replacements for the Black Berkey Elements, but rather an NMCL-endorsed alternative available while Black Berkey Elements remain temporarily unavailable for purchase. (NMCL is the owner of the Berkey brand.)
  • Although the Black Berkey Elements provide slightly more advanced filtration and remove a broader range of contaminants (some at higher reduction levels), the Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition Filters is the closest alternative on the market offering reliable performance and excellent value.

Frequently Asked

Berkey Phoenix Filter Questions

Common questions about fit, testing, certifications, lifespan, and fluoride reduction.

Will Phoenix filters fit my existing Berkey system?

Yes. Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition Filter Elements are direct drop-in replacements for Black Berkey Elements and are compatible with all Berkey stainless steel gravity filter systems including the Travel Berkey, Big Berkey, Royal Berkey, Imperial Berkey, and Crown Berkey. They use the same mounting holes and the standard wing nut and washer hardware that came with your system. The same priming process applies as with Black Berkey Elements.

What is the difference between Phoenix and Black Berkey filters?

Both are gravity filtration elements made by New Millennium Concepts, Ltd. (NMCL) and use activated carbon-based media in a tortuous-path microfiltration design. The core differences are: Phoenix filters carry NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certifications, while Black Berkey elements are independently lab tested to NSF/ANSI standards. Phoenix lasts up to 5,500 gallons per pair compared to 6,000 for Black Berkey. Phoenix is priced at $120 per pair vs. $166 for Black Berkey. For day-to-day use, the two filters are functionally equivalent and fully interchangeable across all Berkey stainless steel systems.

Are Phoenix filters NSF certified?

Yes. Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition Filter Elements are certified to NSF/ANSI 42 (aesthetic effects including chlorine, chloramines, and particulates that affect taste and odor) and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 (lead reduction and lead-free compliance per the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act). Testing was conducted by NABL-accredited ISO/IEC 17025:2017 certified laboratories. Lab reports are publicly available on the Phoenix lab results page.

How long do Phoenix filters last?

Phoenix filters are rated for 5,500 gallons per set of 2 elements (2,750 gallons per filter). For a typical household using 1 to 3 gallons of filtered water per day, that translates to several years of use before replacement. Most families see optimal performance with annual replacement, especially in areas with hard water, sediment, or heavy contaminant loads. Lifespan can be extended by periodically scrubbing the exterior of the elements under cold running water when flow rate slows.

Do Phoenix filters remove fluoride?

Phoenix filters have fluoride reduction capability, but PF-2 fluoride filters are still recommended for consistent fluoride removal across the full life of the elements. Carbon-based media loses fluoride reduction capability relatively quickly, typically after a few hundred gallons. PF-2 elements use activated alumina, which has a natural chemical affinity for fluoride and arsenic, and provide reliable fluoride reduction for up to 1,000 gallons per set. The PF-2 attaches to the bottom of each Phoenix element in the lower chamber.

Where are Phoenix filters manufactured?

Phoenix filters are manufactured in India through NMCL's partnership with the Phoenix gravity filtration engineering team. The factory holds ISO 9001 certification for quality management and the WQA Gold Seal for water treatment product safety and performance. These certifications require rigorous internal, external, annual surveillance, and triennial recertification audits. India is recognized worldwide for innovation in gravity and ceramic filtration because engineers there design solutions for some of the toughest water conditions on earth.

Final Notes About the Berkey Phoenix Filters

  • The Berkey Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition Filters are not the same as Phoenix Gravity’s standard Carbon Filter Elements. Independent testing has confirmed that the New Millennium Edition Filters effectively reduce over 100 additional contaminants beyond what the standard Phoenix Carbon Filters claim.
  • It’s important to note the distinction in product naming, specifically, “New Millennium Edition.” This version has been exclusively manufactured for New Millennium Concepts, Ltd. (NMCL) and going forward the only filter officially endorsed by NMCL for use in Berkey Water Systems as an approved alternative to the Black Berkey Elements (BB9-2).
  • By contrast, Phoenix Gravity Carbon Filters are not endorsed by NMCL for use in Berkey Water Systems.
  • NSF Certification and online listing PENDING. Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements are NSF certified (42 & 372) when included as a component in the complete gravity filter system. Because of the demand for replacement filters, we currently are not offering the filters in the gravity filter systems due to backlogged demand for replacement filters. Currently we are working to obtain the NSF certification for the filters themselves as a standalone component. This is purely administrative.
  • The Berkey Phoenix Filters, NMCL Edition, are manufactured in India through our partnership with the Phoenix gravity filtration engineering team. India is recognized worldwide for innovation in gravity and ceramic filtration, largely because engineers there design solutions for some of the toughest water conditions on earth. This collaboration allows us to deliver a reliable, high-performance, high-quality filter using advanced manufacturing techniques, and at a lower cost to you.
  • Phoenix filters are engineered to operate at a higher flow rate than Black Berkeys. This increase remains fully within the validated tolerance levels for the system and has no impact on achieving the stated filtration standards.

Pretty Darn Good
Format: Kindle
So I’ve been on a omega kick and this definitely hit the spot. Madison was frustrating at times with how she acted towards Lucas, Gray, and Rian. It was like she said towards the end, she didn’t believe she deserved nice things. It would have been nice to hear from her best friends again. They kind of were there in the beginning and the gone except for mention of text messages received from them. I feel like her friends would have been great help in encouraging Madison to go with the pack and never give Brent another chance because he was toxic. I loved Rian. His personality was awesome. His humor. His ability to make Madison comfortable whenever she was feeling overwhelmed. And the fact he fell for her and she fell for him first. They are cute together. I do feel like Lucas was the odd man out though. Like Lucas didn’t develop as much of a relationship with Madison. I would have really liked to see more development in the relationship between them. It was also the same with him and Rian. There is really no relationship displayed. Most of the relationship being displayed is between Rian and Gray. Nevertheless, I loved reading about the dynamic that came to fruition during the entirety of this story. Madison finally got her happiness. And Brent finally got punched in the face. Everyone got exactly what they deserve.

Pack's Promise was okay but not great
Format: Kindle
Pack's Promise was okay but not great. I won't recommend it to anyone that I know. PRO: * Very likable characters * Lots of steamy scenes that are written very well * The spelling and grammar are good * The punctuation is good with the exception of using hyphens instead of commas. Lots of hyphens. Lots and lots of hyphens. CON: * Almost no interactions with any characters outside of Madison and the pack * Nearly no plot. They meet, get together for a heat, agree to make it permanent, done * Quite a few typos such as extraneous words, missing words and words out of order THINGS TO KNOW: * More steamy scenes than storytelling * A lot of MM & MMM, some MFMM during heat

Fluffy and Nice Omegaverse
Format: Kindle
… this would have made 5 stars but for 2 reasons. A.) there were quite a few typos; misspelled words, missing quotations, “the his” mistakes, and various signs that maybe a proofread would do good. B.) the writing was quite textbook. Late blooming omega is struggling with her new self, finds a absurdly wealthy pack of alphas, every thing is almost insta-love but she resists, then decides to love herself and let everyone be happy. Rian was my favourite (obviously the author’s favourite too because he got the most page time) but I wish we could see more of his CEO side? He went to work maybe ONCE the entire time. Gray was supposed to be the “growly one” but he turned out to be puppy dog. Lucas was a genius brainiac doctor - but also super alpha with an aggressive hindbrain with a breeding k*nk?? And then there was no actual “breeding”?? Spice 3/5 - normally omegaverse books are super high on messy smut but this was tamer. Romance 3/5 - insta-love that was then resisted because of personal hangup’s Plot 2/5 - weird paced head hopping, showing the same scene from different POV’s that made me feel like it was 2 steps backward, 1 step forward. Humour 4/5 - there were a dozen lines that genuinely made me chuckle out loud Would have been five stars but the lack of proofreading and the predictable plot made me unable to get up to ADORED IT level - four stars is still and official ENJOYED IT, y’all. This isn’t a bad rating. The “Club Heat” has intriguing possibilities so I’m going to give the second one a shot.

Good start to a series
Format: Kindle
I delayed reading the series for reasons I don’t remember. But my TBR list is huge so I thought I’d take a shot of this and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think the blurb about it was anything special. But it was a very good book. It took some interesting twists and turns. I am so glad the second book is already out. Because I would not have waited patiently. Very slow burn but good storyline. 🔥🔥/5
