Mexican Hat is a striking native wildflower that adds height, color, and movement to prairie-style and pollinator-friendly gardens. Recognized by its tall central cone and drooping red and yellow petals, this unique bloom is not just visually interesting—it also plays an important role in supporting beneficial insects. A member of the coneflower family, Mexican Hat thrives in full sun and poor, dry soils, making it ideal for naturalized landscapes, xeriscaping, and wildflower meadows. Its ability to withstand heat and drought makes it one of the easiest low-maintenance flowers to grow in arid and temperate climates alike.
These prairie wildflower seeds establish quickly and bloom from late spring through summer, returning year after year in most regions. Deer resistant and highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and native pollinators, Mexican Hat is a must-have in any biodiverse planting. Whether grown on its own or blended into a larger wildflower mix, this plant adds upright texture and bold, cheerful color to the garden. Mexican Hat (Ratibida columnifera) is well-suited for roadside restoration, habitat projects, or simply enhancing your home garden with a touch of the untamed prairie.
