Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' is a compact cultivated form of Ctenanthe setosa, grown for upright clumping growth and crisp, cool-toned foliage. The leaves are silver-green to pale green with darker green striping along the veins, while the undersides carry a purple tone that becomes visible as the leaves lift.

This cultivar forms a tidy indoor clump with the patterned, rhizomatous character of Ctenanthe setosa. Its balanced shape fits shelves, sideboards and plant stands while still giving the clear leaf movement associated with prayer plants.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' leaf pattern and habit

  • Compact Ctenanthe setosa selection with upright, clumping growth
  • Silver-green leaves marked with darker green herringbone striping
  • Purple leaf undersides visible during daily foliage movement
  • Softly hairy, purple-tinged green stems on mature growth
  • Well suited to warm indoor bright shade and steady humidity

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' growth background

Ctenanthe setosa is an accepted species in Marantaceae, native to eastern and southern Brazil and recorded from wet tropical biome conditions. This perennial forms clumps, and cultivated forms are grown mainly for patterned evergreen foliage.

'Compactstar' is grown as a tender evergreen perennial with oblong to ovate pale silvery-green leaves, dark grey-green herringbone markings and purple undersides. In the home, the plant forms a tight foliage clump from the base and looks strongest when several rooted shoots develop together in the same pot.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' care indoors

  • Light: Keep in bright indirect light or bright shade. Filter direct sun before it reaches the pale leaf surface.
  • Watering: Rewater after the upper 20–30% of the substrate has dried. Maintain even moisture and let drainage clear after each watering.
  • Substrate: A fine, airy medium with moisture retention suits the thin roots and rhizomes. Coir or peat-free fibre, fine bark and perlite are suitable components.
  • Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity, around 50–70%, to support smoother leaves and reduce crisp edges.
  • Temperature: Hold indoor conditions in a warm range around 18–28 °C. Place the pot away from cold windowsills and temperatures below about 15 °C.
  • Feeding: Feed at low strength during active growth. Pale leaves can show fertiliser stress as edge burn or spotting.
  • Potting: Use a pot with drainage and move up gradually during repotting. Compact rhizomes prefer a container that dries predictably.
  • Repotting: Repot when the plant has filled its pot or the substrate has compacted. Spring repotting gives the clump time to rebuild.
  • Grooming: Remove damaged outer leaves at the base. Leave the centre open enough for air movement and pest checks.
  • Propagation: Separate mature clumps during repotting, giving each division several healthy shoots and roots.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' common stress signs

  • Leaf curl: Check substrate moisture, root health and heat exposure. Curling appears when water balance is disturbed.
  • Dry brown tips: Review humidity, watering consistency and mineral content in the water.
  • Yellowing leaves: Inspect the roots and drainage. Compact plants can suffer quickly in cold, saturated substrate.
  • Pale or scorched patches: Place the plant in filtered light away from direct sun.
  • Fine speckling: Look for spider mites on the undersides, especially during dry winter heating periods.
  • Deformed new leaves: Check for thrips, root stress and uneven moisture while the leaf is still expanding.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' household notes

Keep Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' away from animals and children that chew houseplants. Nibbled foliage can upset sensitive stomachs and damage new leaves.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' epithet and cultivar note

Within Ctenanthe, the name is commonly interpreted from Greek roots meaning “comb” and “anther.” The species epithet setosa comes from botanical Latin meaning setose or bristly, referring to bristle-like hairs. Taxonomically, Ctenanthe setosa (Roscoe) Eichler is accepted in the family Marantaceae.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' forms compact Brazilian prayer-plant growth with pale striped foliage and purple undersides.

A great way to introduce the classics to your kid
Format: Paperback
I mean it. It's very funny, yet introduces a number of important stories and characters from greek mythology and the Bible right though to Shakespeare. Will be funnier when my son reads the actual stories these are based on. A whole lotta compare and contrast will ensue, I imagine. I think it will pique his interest in the classics.

No recomiendo
Format: Paperback
