Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium

Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium is a green heartleaf Philodendron with slim flexible vines and glossy cordate leaves that taper to a pointed tip. The stems can trail from a hanging pot, extend along a surface or climb when aerial roots find support.

The leaves are usually medium to dark green, cordate at the base and pointed at the tip. Young plants make smaller leaves on loose stems, while older vines can produce broader leaves when warmth, root health and upward growth stay steady.

Glossy pointed leaves on flexible green vines

  • Glossy green leaves with a cordate base and pointed tip.
  • Flexible stems can trail, cascade or climb when given a pole, plank or trellis.
  • Long vines can be shortened above a node to encourage side shoots.
  • Visible nodes make stem cuttings and pruning cuts easy to place.
  • Several cuttings in one pot can produce denser growth from the base.

From juvenile heart leaves to broader climbing foliage

Philodendron hederaceum is an epiphytic climber in Araceae, the aroid family, with a broad native range from Mexico through Tropical America. Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium is native from Mexico to Honduras and grows as a climber in the wet tropical biome.

Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium has glossy green leaves, pointed tips and flexible vining stems. The epithet oxycardium refers to the pointed heart shape of the leaf blade.

Steady care for green heartleaf Philodendron

  • Light: Place in bright indirect light for tighter internodes; it tolerates softer light but may grow longer, thinner vines.
  • Substrate: A loose aroid mix gives the fleshy roots oxygen and reduces the risk of wet-root yellowing.
  • Watering: Water when the upper mix has dried, then let excess water leave the pot completely.
  • Temperature: Keep above 18 °C for steady growth and avoid cold glass or draughts.
  • Humidity: Moderate indoor humidity is usually suitable, but very dry air can make new tips smaller or slower to open.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots have filled the pot, using a container with drainage and only a modest size increase.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertiliser; steady green vines do not need heavy feeding.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings root from nodes, especially when each cutting has at least one healthy leaf and one visible node.
  • Semi-hydroponics: The plant can adapt to inert or mineral substrates if roots are transitioned carefully and kept oxygenated.
  • Placement: Place it where the vines have room to trail or climb, away from cold air movement and harsh direct sun.
  • Climbing setup: A pole, plank or trellis lets the stems climb and can encourage broader leaves on established vines.
  • Maintenance: Cut long stems above a node to encourage new side shoots; rooted cuttings can be planted back into the pot for denser growth.
  • Growth rate: Growth is usually moderate to fast in warmth, bright indirect light and a loose, evenly managed root zone.

Bare stems, yellow leaves and node pests

  • Leggy growth: Usually linked to low light or long unsupported stems; prune and move to brighter indirect light.
  • Yellow leaves near the base: Check for overwatering, blocked drainage or old compacted substrate.
  • Small leaves on older vines: Add support or prune back to a stronger node if trailing stems have become too long.
  • Brown tips: Look at watering consistency, salt buildup and dry air before changing several conditions at once.
  • Pest clusters at nodes: Inspect under leaves and along stems, especially where vines overlap in a dense hanging pot.

Safety

This heartleaf Philodendron contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets that chew plants and avoid touching your eyes after pruning or handling cut stems.

Published variety and pointed leaf name

Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium was published as Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium (Schott) Croat in World Checklist and Bibliography of Araceae in 2002. The variety is based on the earlier name Philodendron oxycardium Schott. Philodendron comes from Greek roots for fondness and tree, hederaceum refers to ivy-like growth, and oxycardium combines pointed with heart.

Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium brings glossy green heart-shaped leaves to a flexible vine that can stay trailing or climb into broader, more mature growth.

Great Sunscreen at a Great Price!
Style: SPF 50, Size: 8 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Love this sunscreen. I live in FL and like to walk most mornings, and need a good sunblock. This Amazon Basics is far better than my previous, far more expensive brand. It's a great price for great quality. I've been using it on my body & face, it's non-greasy, absorbs well, and really seems to offer very good sun protection. And I really appreciate the next day shipping on my past two orders, Amazon. Thanks for the great product & great service!

Just ok - too thick to apply evenly
Style: SPF 50, Size: 8 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Just ok - very thick, so difficult to apply evenly. I use this for outdoor cycling and it works, but it's so thick that it tends to clump instead of smoothly covering the skin.

Best Moisturizer & Clears ECZEMA FAST! TIPS & BONUS USES
Size: 11 Ounce (Pack of 1)
After wasting money on many supermarket and expensive brands, this is the only one that really works! I don't have eczema, but another friend does, who first told me about this product. I do have dry skin, though, whenever I over wash my hands due to chores, repairs or taking care of family, and the dry indoor heat or coldness of winter weather. My friend with eczema swears by this. She's tried other brands and even prescriptions, which have side effects (steroids thin the skin and is bad for your immunity). When her skin had cracks or is itchy, she applies it, and it heals up within a few days. She uses it also as maintenance daily, to prevent future outbreaks or skin cracking. There's the regular "Aveeno Eczema Therapy" in a tube, but it stings at first if you have any cracks in the skin, which subsides after a few minutes, but it works faster with sealing up cracks. I love this product because it's very rich, but not too greasy. It doesn't sting if you have skin cracks, and is gentler and still works well, but it takes a little bit longer. It's even more effective than the regular "Aveeno Baby Eczema Care" creme in a tube. I prefer jars because there's always some product left in a tube. You can't squeeze out what's left at the bottom, and have to cut the tube apart to get at it. AMAZON HAS THE BEST PRICE, that I've seen online or off. It's also available in the Baby Section only at stores like supermarkets, pharmacies, etc., but this is the lowest price. SUBSCRIBE, and you can save even more. DO NOT BUY ANY GENERICS! They don't work! I've tried buying them, since it looked like they had the same ingredients, and costs less, but they are simply not efficacious. USE WATER TO KEEP MOISTURE IN: Surprisingly enough, it's not the moisturizer per se that keeps your skin hydrated, it's water. For example, think of a grape (full, plump with water, juicy), versus a prune (a dried out grape). Moisturizer provides a physical barrier to keep your skin hydrated. Of course, a moisturizer's ingredients can also make it a superior or inferior product. The Aveeno Eczema line has colloidal oatmeal, which is soothing, and healing to the skin. HOW TO USE WATER WITH MOISTURIZER: Wet the application areas with water first (I run my hands lightly under the tap), so the product will absorb faster (water hydrates when mixed with moisturizer), and it won't be greasy. Your skin will feel non-greasy, and not wet within a few minutes. Use a paper towel or tissues to lightly wipe off the excess, and you can use your hands right away. I find that this method keeps my skin hydrated more effectively and longer. YOU'LL USE LESS CREAM WITH WATER: I use only a tablespoon size, and spread it all over my hands, and along my forearms and elbows. Water thins and spreads out the cream more easily. You can use it on DRY, CRACKED FEET, too. Apply it throughout the day after you wash your hands and before bed, and you'll never get dry skin or eczema outbreaks again! (Per me and my circle of friends). BUY SEVERAL JARS, and scatter around them the house, like the bathrooms, kitchen, work areas, etc. BONUS USES: 1. INSECT BITES: A friend reported that it even works in a pinch to help alleviate bug bites that she's gotten (fleas from animal rescue, mosquitoes, etc). Wash the area or use an alcoholic sanitizer or baby wipes to clean the bite area first. Then spread on Aveeno, if you don't have an antihistamine topical product handy. ALOE VERA GEL FROM THE PLANT also has miraculous healing powers with insect bites, burns, skin rashes, etc. You just cut a small piece at an angle, open it up with scissors along the leaf's seam, and apply the gel. You can wrap a bandage or strip of clean cloth lightly over the area to keep the gel in place, if you want. The cut plant area will close by itself within a day. Aloe vera is sold cheap at supermarkets, nurseries, etc., at under $10. The gel feels cool and soothing to the skin. The plant is superior to any packaged product. DO NOT SCRATCH THE ITCH! IF YOU IGNORE IT, IT'LL DISAPPEAR by itself within a few hours. Trust me, it really works with mosquito bites. I used to itch for days, until I stopped scratching it. Distract yourself by watching tv, reading or using your cell to ignore the itch, and just lightly apply your best anti-itch remedy (DO NOT RUB or you'll stimulate the histamines from the bite). Anytime that you're tempted to scratch, apply your remedy instead. THE BEST THINGS TO STOP ITCHING FAST (In order of effectiveness) are: 1) Anti-histamine topical product 2) Aloe vera gel from the plant (also heals the skin) 3) Aveeno creme (also heals the skin) 4) Alcoholic rub 2. SKIN RASHES: A friend of mine said she was by herself with the baby one day, stuck with no car and husband away, when the diaper creme had run out in the evening. She applied Aveeno several times, and the rash disappeared the next morning. Another friend used Aveeno for a strange rash that showed up on her arm when she accidentally brushed against some plants when hiking, and it disappeared within a few hours. She washed the area first, then applied the cream. Of course, it's best to use a product designed for rashes, especially for babies. And get any mysterious rash checked out by a doctor. Btw, I don't get compensated for any of my reviews. I wanted to give a recommendation for a fantastic moisturizer that I've been using for several years.
