Wyethia angustifolia

Mule's ear is a sturdy perennial wildflower with large, sunflower-like flowers on 1’ stalks.  It grows in many different plant communities, from woodlands to grasslands, and is found in many different parts of California, as well as in other parts of the West. It likes good drainage and full sun, often growing on slopes.

Infrequently offered in the trade, mule's ear goes dormant with the dry time and stays quiescent through the winter, emerging in early spring, sometimes as early as February. Both the flower stalks and the seeds were important indigenous foods. The flower stalks were considered a delicacy before bloom, and the seeds were gathered for pinole.

They have "erratic germination," meaning the seed germinates over a long period of time. Some recommend "cold-stratification," but we keep things simple and just sow it in the fall. Sow in flats and transplant into 4" pots when the true leaves emerge, to accommodate the plant's significant taproot. When the roots have filled the 4" pot, we usually transplant it to a 5-gallon container, where it can grow without constraint, before planting it out in the ground. We use gopher baskets, though they may be unnecessary. Gophers don't seem to be a problem in the wild. Let us know your experience.

In one grassy, hilly area, we noticed a considerable increase in mule's ear patches after controlled burns. It survives even though surrounded by weedy grasses, to gladden our hearts. This winter-dormant, drought-tolerant perennial will be a welcome addition to your meadow of native grasses and wildflowers.

Great toys. Bouncy, chewable long term.
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
We got these for our puppy and to see how they would compare to kongs. Our dogs love these more than the kongs and so far, with two chewy dogs, they have not destroyed these yet. They are very bouncy and provide a lot of chasing fun. We will be buying more and we recommend these.

Durable
Size: Large
Excellent material. I wish the hole was a little smaller to keep the treats in better. Also wish they were a little larger and/or oddly shaped so as not to fit under the sofa. Still totally worth it.

Subtle, great dog toy design!
Size: Large
These things are amazing. Stuff them with peanut butter and treats and freeze them of course, but football spike them across the yard to drive your overly hyped dog nuts! And the hole allows you to safely pry it out of a tug battle , just a great design! And it can bobble across a small living space without getting lost like a ball would. Love it!

Treats fall out way to easy
Size: Large
Kinda sorta awful at holding treats in it, they just fall out without my dog even having to touch it really. I spread peanut butter on the inside of the toy and freeze it..works much better that way, nay, works amazing that way. I got this toy to stimulate his brain, so he’s either much smarter than every other dog or the treats fall out too easy..I believe it’s the ladder.

Great for enrichment treats for dogs
Size: Large, Size: Large
Great product and durable. We fill them with wet dog food and freeze it then give it to our dogs as enrichment treats. They love it. It’s super easy to use and strong against dogs bites and chewing
