'Baby Jade' (Crassula ovata) is a versatile and resilient grower, thriving indoors as a potted plant or outdoors as a dense, mounding shrub. Its small, round leaves grow on thick branches and can develop a red tint at the edges when exposed to direct sunlight. Native to South Africa and Mozambique, it flourishes naturally on rocky slopes. This cultivar can reach a height of about 12 inches, though it can be kept compact and bonsai-sized with indoor growing, small pots, and regular pruning.
'Baby Jade' is an ideal plant for beginners due to its forgiving nature. It requires well-draining soil, plenty of sunlight, and protection from hard frost. Mature outdoor plants often become drought-tolerant, requiring little to no irrigation. You may notice that the plant shrinks during dry periods and swells when rehydrated. While it reproduces easily from cuttings, it can also produce clusters of white, star-shaped flowers in winter.
