Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret'

Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' is a compact Bornean Alocasia with thick, metallic-looking leaves and deep purple leaf backs. The blades are leathery, peltate and ovate, with a raised surface that catches light across the main veins. On a settled plant, the upper surface can show silver-green, bronze-green, olive and smoky copper tones, while the underside adds darker red-purple colour below the blade.

The species grows from an erect rhizome and usually carries only a small number of substantial leaves at once. North Kalimantan material records plants around 49.5 cm tall, with petioles to around 46 cm and leathery peltate blades. Indoors, Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' usually stays compact in proportion, while mature leaves gain more weight, gloss and surface relief as the root system strengthens.

Metallic texture and purple reverses

The leaf surface carries the close-up detail. Mature blades are bullate between the main veins, so the tissue rises into firm panels across the blade. This creates a hammered, shield-like texture that looks almost metallic when light moves across it. The upper surface is glossy and darker near the primary veins, while the underside is deep purple to burgundy. This two-sided colour is especially visible when leaves angle outward from the base.

New leaves can open softer and greener, then deepen as the blade hardens. The reflective surface becomes clearer with maturity, and the underside colour usually strengthens as the tissue firms. Leaf colour also changes with angle, age and light direction. A single plant can therefore look coppery in morning light, olive-green from above and wine-purple from below.

  • Leaf shape: ovate, peltate blades with a shield-like outline.
  • Leaf surface: leathery, glossy and bullate between the main veins.
  • Upper colour: metallic green, bronze, olive or copper tones depending on leaf age and light angle.
  • Lower colour: deep purple to burgundy, especially visible when petioles angle outward.
  • Growth habit: compact rhizome with several substantial leaves held close above the pot.

Bornean habitat clues

Alocasia cuprea is recorded from Borneo, with published distribution including Sabah, Sarawak and North Kalimantan. Field notes from North Kalimantan describe terrestrial plants growing from riverbank to cliff in montane forest, in sandy soil to leaf-litter-covered brown humus, with open to moderate shade at around 1005 m elevation. Other notes on the species connect it with rocky forest settings, including ultramafic, limestone and sandstone areas.

Indoors, Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' needs warmth, filtered brightness, steady moisture and oxygen around the roots. Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' wants warmth, filtered brightness, steady moisture and oxygen around the roots. The plant’s thick leaves sit heavily above the pot, and the root system depends on a breathable substrate. A mix with bark, coarse mineral particles and a moisture-holding base matches its combination of firm foliage and compact rhizome growth.

Root warmth for Red Secret

  • Light: Give soft bright light or soft filtered morning sun. This keeps leaves firm and metallic colour clear while protecting the glossy surface from hot midday scorch.
  • Watering: Let the upper mix dry first, then soak evenly and allow the pot to drain. Fresh air should return to the mix before the next watering.
  • Substrate: Use a well-aerated mix with bark, coarse mineral drainage and a moisture-retentive base. The mix should re-oxygenate well after each watering.
  • Temperature: Warmth at the roots matters as much as room temperature, especially after watering.
  • Humidity: Aim for steady humidity, around 60–80% where possible. This helps new leaves expand cleanly and reduces edge stress on the thick blades.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly as the plant produces new leaves with a balanced diluted fertiliser. Gentle nutrition matches the compact root system and limits salt marks on glossy leaves.
  • Pot choice: Choose a container close to the root mass and move up gradually. A predictable drying pattern keeps the rhizome steadier.
  • Mineral substrates: Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' can adapt to inert mineral or semi-hydro substrates after a careful transition, with warmth and balanced nutrition.

Container drying and winter slowing

Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' often grows one leaf at a time indoors. A base may hold only a few mature leaves, then retire an older blade as a new one strengthens. This measured leaf production matches the thick, glossy, energy-demanding leaves. A firm rhizome, steady petioles and clean new growth show the plant is stable.

In darker months, growth can pause while the plant holds its existing leaves. The pot also dries more slowly, so watering intervals usually lengthen. Keep the plant warm, maintain filtered daylight and avoid repotting during a quiet period unless the roots or substrate clearly need attention. Repot while growth is active once the root ball has filled the container.

Stress signs on metallic leaves

  • Yellowing leaves: Check pot weight, root temperature and substrate structure. Several yellow leaves together often point to a wet lower mix or slowed roots.
  • Brown edges or patches: Review watering consistency, humidity, heat load and mineral build-up. Glossy leaves show residue and stress marks quickly.
  • Dull metallic surface: Clean mature leaves gently and check for dust, hard-water spotting, sun stress or spider-mite damage.
  • Drooping petioles: Inspect moisture below the surface and check the rhizome. Thirst, cold exposure, heat load and root decline can all reduce petiole strength.
  • Small new leaves: Recent transport, low light, cold roots or tired substrate can reduce the next leaf size for one growth cycle.
  • Pest check: Pests on new growth can leave speckling, scars or fine webbing on the glossy surface and along the leaf backs.

Maintenance and division

Remove fully yellowed leaves at the base with clean scissors once they have faded. Keep healthy leaves in place because the compact habit relies on each functioning blade. Wipe mature leaves with a soft damp cloth while supporting the underside, and keep the natural surface clear of heavy residues.

Divide offsets or firm corms when the plant is already producing new leaves. Young pieces restart in warmth with a modest pot and open mix. Mature plants can flower with paired inflorescences, a green to greenish-maroon spathe and a spadix, while the metallic shield leaves carry the indoor display.

Oxalate crystals in cuprea tissue

Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Place the pot where pets and small children cannot reach the metallic leaves. Wear gloves when trimming or dividing the plant if sap irritates your skin.

Copper colour behind cuprea

The accepted name is Alocasia cuprea (K.Koch & C.D.Bouché) K.Koch, published under Alocasia in 1861 in the Araceae family. The epithet cuprea comes from Latin cupreus, meaning coppery or of copper, matching the metallic tones of the leaf surface.

No more funky smell!
Have had a funky smell for a while in my car. Air fresheners just couldn't quite cover it up. I pulled the old filter out which was reallll caked up with stuff and got the new one in. Not only is the funky smell finally gone, but the HVAC is a lot quieter when on full blast, and it blows the air harder. It fit great, installation was easy, and having the smell gone makes it worth absolutely every penny.
