Ponytail Palm is one of those plants that earns compliments from everyone who walks through the door. Its distinctive swollen base stores water like a natural reservoir, and from it sprouts a fountain of long, arching, grass-like leaves that cascade downward in every direction. It grows slowly, lives for decades, and asks almost nothing in return.
Good for beginners? Yes, absolutely. Ponytail Palm is one of the most drought-tolerant houseplants you can own. It thrives on neglect, tolerates missed waterings with ease, and adapts to a wide range of indoor conditions.
Safe for cats and dogs? Yes. Ponytail Palm is non-toxic to pets, making it a great choice for homes with cats and dogs.
Light needs: Loves bright indirect to direct light. A sunny window is ideal. It will tolerate medium light but grows best with as much light as you can give it.
Care at a glance: Water deeply, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. This plant stores water in its trunk, so overwatering is the only real risk. Feed once or twice during spring and summer. Repot only when roots are visibly crowded.
