Sarracenia purpurea, commonly known as the Purple Pitcher Plant, is one of the most iconic carnivorous plants in North America. Unlike taller pitcher plants, it forms low-growing rosettes of beautifully curved pitchers that collect rainwater and digest prey over time. Admired for its toughness, fascinating growth habit, and ever-changing coloration, it has become a staple in bog gardens and temperate carnivorous plant collections.
Among the many forms of this remarkable species, Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa var. montana stands out as one of the most beautiful. Native to the Appalachian mountains, this rare form produces dramatic venation and rich coloration ranging from deep green and rose tones to intense burgundy in strong light. Its compact, rugged appearance and fuzzy exterior give it an almost prehistoric character that becomes even more impressive as the plant matures.
Cold hardy, durable, and easy to grow, var. montana thrives in full sun with consistently wet conditions. Mature plants develop into stunning clumps that provide exceptional color and texture throughout the growing season, making this one of the finest forms of the Purple Pitcher Plant for both collectors and outdoor bog gardens.
